...I’ve just come back from my 6th stay at a Thistle Hotel this year. This is because I have a mad passion for travelling up and down the country staying in various hotels that belong to the Thistle chain; quite fascinating once you get into the swing of things. I love the same old set out of the rooms and same old extortionist prices that always seem to equal horrible tasting food. Not convincing? Ok, well the truth is the company I work for (ICL) has negotiated some kind of contract with Thistle hotels (unfortunately), which means that if I ever go away on a business trip then my first choice should be a Thistle Hotel as we’ll get accommodation cheaper than a normal individual off the street. Thistle London Heathrow : Best Avoided

Advantages: Close to airport and shuttle bus runs frequently
Disadvantages: Bad service, dated rooms

..., and the 'Heathrow Hoppa' runs quite frequently and drops off at every terminal. You are quite close the runways at this hotel and outside it can get quite noisy, although you can't really hear the planes when inside your room. The staff at this hotel on whole were polite but seemed disinterested and it seemed to be an ordeal when we complained about the standard of the room. I've read on other review sites that this hotel has recently undergone updating work and the rooms are much better. Perhaps this is now the case, but I don't think I'll be staying at a Thistle hotel again....

Glasgow Thistle - Never again!

Disadvantages: Small rooms, dirty, run down, expensive and very limited menu.

...I have just spent eight weeks at the Glasgow Thistle Hotel. They were the worst eight weks of my life so far and it was all down to the hotel. On our first night at the hotel, our group arrived at about 1am in the morning after a flight delay. The night staff quickly and efficiently allocated us our rooms which were located on the first floor. As i got into my room, i was aware of a groaning noise coming from the window area. On looking out the window, i realised that our rooms were next to the hotels air conditioning units. I was so tired at this point that i did not request to be moved, as i was being picked up for my course at 8.30 am. the room was equipped with two single beds, which appeared slightly smaller than standard. ...Relaxation amongst the hustle and bustle of Kings X. Having been on Julie’s travelling road show and living out of a suitcase for the last two weeks , I must admit that I was glad to be back in London (instead of Norfolk) and in a name brand Hotel. I guessed that parking was a problem at the Kings X Thistle and had contacted their enquiries department by e-mail to arrange for parking. I was delighted by the fact that within one hour confirmation that a space had been reserved for me was received by e-mail. No mention of the £12.50 per night charge though (but we can’t have everything and I wasn’t being billed!) I got lost travelling from Romford to the hotel despite using their web site for a route planner which was very thorough and literally told me every single road to go down. How did she get lost then...

The Thistle Islington is situated on Kings Cross Road just a stones throw from Kings Cross mainline station (with St. Pancras next door) and the Kings Cross Thameslink station. At weekends Kings Cross Road tends not to get too busy because it leads to the business area of Holborn, etc which is quieter on those days. Just across the road there are a couple of Japanese restaurants and a convenience store which also sells magazines and newspapers. The entrance looks rather grand and the hotel looks quite pleasant as you approach from Kings Cross. The Thistle - Leaving A Thorn In Your Wallet

Advantages: I stayed for free. I ate, drank and worked while the company picked up the tab

...I recently spent 2 nights at a graduate job assessment centre in the ultra exotic location of Middlesbrough. Our venue for our stay way their local Thistle hotel which, though national, is a chain I had not experienced before. The directions on the website were reasonable and though a short detour meant it took me twice as long as planned to get there from the station, the fact that it was located just moments away meant I was still there within 10 minutes of stepping off the train. Checking in took a few minutes as a group of us seemed to have arrived at once, so I had chance to look around the lobby. This was small as they go, with only 8 seats available ? meaning that when out group of 11 assembled there in the morning some were left standing. The lobby area was not a particularly interesting one, housing a few free newspapers...

Disadvantages: Overpriced if you cannot grab a bargain

...On choosing a hotel I tend to go for nice architecture and/or a historic building which has lots of interest, nooks and crannies to explore and rooms which you know you shouldn't go in but you do, however, after finding no available accommodation like this at short notice in London and needing to book quickly I opted for what seemed the next best option, the Thistle Tower which overlooks Tower Bridge in London, (like you hadn't guessed) Getting there from Kings Cross seemed like a hike but the tube takes you there after 2 changes at Bank and Monument to Tower Hill in around 10 minutes.
