Thistling in Bristol

...I’ve just come back from my 6th stay at a Thistle Hotel this year. This is because I have a mad passion for travelling up and down the country staying in various hotels that belong to the Thistle chain; quite fascinating once you get into the swing of things. I love the same old set out of the rooms and same old extortionist prices that always seem to equal horrible tasting food. Not convincing? Ok, well the truth is the company I work for (ICL) has negotiated some kind of contract with Thistle hotels (unfortunately), which means that if I ever go away on a business trip then my first choice should be a Thistle Hotel as we’ll get accommodation cheaper than a normal individual off the street. A Great Hotel

Advantages: Easy to find, great base for sightseeing

...Just back from 3 nights stay in this hotel. Firstly, it was very easy to find you can actually see it from the A9 so whether you care arriving from the North or the South it is just minutes from the slip road off of the A9 taking you into Inverness. The hotel has its own large car park, which is free. My first impression from the outside was that it looks a bit run down. The outside probably needs a lick of paint and is a bit dated but once inside I was pleasantly suprised. You enter into a large reception area, to the right of you there is the large restaurant and to the left is the large bar. The Thistle Islington is situated on Kings Cross Road just a stones throw from Kings Cross mainline station (with St. Pancras next door) and the Kings Cross Thameslink station. At weekends Kings Cross Road tends not to get too busy because it leads to the business area of Holborn, etc which is quieter on those days. Just across the road there are a couple of Japanese restaurants and a convenience store which also sells magazines and newspapers. ...Relaxation amongst the hustle and bustle of Kings X. Having been on Julie’s travelling road show and living out of a suitcase for the last two weeks , I must admit that I was glad to be back in London (instead of Norfolk) and in a name brand Hotel. I guessed that parking was a problem at the Kings X Thistle and had contacted their enquiries department by e-mail to arrange for parking. I was delighted by the fact that within one hour confirmation that a space had been reserved for me was received by e-mail. No mention of the £12.50 per night charge though (but we can’t have everything and I wasn’t being billed!) I got lost travelling from Romford to the hotel despite using their web site for a route planner which was very thorough and literally told me every single road to go down. How did she get lost then...

Glasgow Thistle - Never again!

...I have just spent eight weeks at the Glasgow Thistle Hotel. They were the worst eight weks of my life so far and it was all down to the hotel. On our first night at the hotel, our group arrived at about 1am in the morning after a flight delay. The night staff quickly and efficiently allocated us our rooms which were located on the first floor. As i got into my room, i was aware of a groaning noise coming from the window area. On looking out the window, i realised that our rooms were next to the hotels air conditioning units. I was so tired at this point that i did not request to be moved, as i was being picked up for my course at 8.30 am. the room was equipped with two single beds, which appeared slightly smaller than standard. THISTLE BE MY ROOM THEN!

Disadvantages: Overpriced if you cannot grab a bargain

...On choosing a hotel I tend to go for nice architecture and/or a historic building which has lots of interest, nooks and crannies to explore and rooms which you know you shouldn't go in but you do, however, after finding no available accommodation like this at short notice in London and needing to book quickly I opted for what seemed the next best option, the Thistle Tower which overlooks Tower Bridge in London, (like you hadn't guessed) Getting there from Kings Cross seemed like a hike but the tube takes you there after 2 changes at Bank and Monument to Tower Hill in around 10 minutes. (Circle or District lines will take you there). Ideally located Hotel

...I stayed at this hotel last weekend 19/20 November 2006 for one night. I paid GBP 160 but also had to pay GBP 10 extra for VAT. This included breakfast and was for a sea view double room. The hotel is situated on the sea front and is about 15 - 20 mins walk from the train station (which can be a bit annoying especially if you are carrying luggage). But it is a straight road down and then turn left at the end. You cant miss the hotel as it stands out quite a bit from the others. It is glass fronted and is a lot bigger than some of the smaller hotels you may pass. The hotel is about a 5 minute walk from Brighton Pier (come out of the hotel and turn left - you cant miss it) Once we arrived at the hotel, we were greeted with a flight of stairs to the reception area(about 10) and the lift did not seem like it was for for hotel guests...
