...A couple of weeks ago we decided to take advantage of a great rail offer in our local paper which (by collecting tokens) would allow us to travel from Newcastle to London (return!) for the bargain sum of fifteen pounds each. A friend from Slovakia was coming to London for a week and we wanted to spend a day with him but since we are off to Naples in a few weeks we did not want to break the bank when it came to booking a room for the night. Since the Newcastle service terminates at Kings Cross we decided to centre our search on that area. We would be able to jump off the train, leave our bags at the hotel and have the rest of the day to spend with Milo. Thistle London Heathrow : Best Avoided

Advantages: Close to airport and shuttle bus runs frequently
Disadvantages: Bad service, dated rooms

..., and the 'Heathrow Hoppa' runs quite frequently and drops off at every terminal. You are quite close the runways at this hotel and outside it can get quite noisy, although you can't really hear the planes when inside your room. The staff at this hotel on whole were polite but seemed disinterested and it seemed to be an ordeal when we complained about the standard of the room. I've read on other review sites that this hotel has recently undergone updating work and the rooms are much better. Perhaps this is now the case, but I don't think I'll be staying at a Thistle hotel again....

Kings X Thistle

Advantages: Surprisingly relaxing amid the bustle of Kings X
Disadvantages: They could do with a better cleaner

...Relaxation amongst the hustle and bustle of Kings X. Having been on Julie’s travelling road show and living out of a suitcase for the last two weeks , I must admit that I was glad to be back in London (instead of Norfolk) and in a name brand Hotel. I guessed that parking was a problem at the Kings X Thistle and had contacted their enquiries department by e-mail to arrange for parking. I was delighted by the fact that within one hour confirmation that a space had been reserved for me was received by e-mail. No mention of the £12.50 per night charge though (but we can’t have everything and I wasn’t being billed!) I got lost travelling from Romford to the hotel despite using their web site for a route planner which was very thorough and literally told me every single road to go down. How did she get lost then...

THISTLE BE MY ROOM THEN!

Advantages: Great location, luxurious
Disadvantages: Overpriced if you cannot grab a bargain

...On choosing a hotel I tend to go for nice architecture and/or a historic building which has lots of interest, nooks and crannies to explore and rooms which you know you shouldn't go in but you do, however, after finding no available accommodation like this at short notice in London and needing to book quickly I opted for what seemed the next best option, the Thistle Tower which overlooks Tower Bridge in London, (like you hadn't guessed) Getting there from Kings Cross seemed like a hike but the tube takes you there after 2 changes at Bank and Monument to Tower Hill in around 10 minutes. (Circle or District lines will take you there). Upon arriving from Tower Hill tube which is just a short walk from the hotel I was initially disappointed with the exterior which resembled a large municipal library built in the 1970's, overlooking such...

Victoria Park Plaza Hotel, London It's More Than A Hotel!

Advantages: Pleasant Staff, Good Customer Service, Nice Breakfast
Disadvantages: Expensive

...The Victoria Park Plaza in London is an amazing hotel that has very comfortable, quality rooms and staff who are friendly and professional. The best thing about The Victoria Park Plaza is that it is in a prime position just two minutes from Victoria Station and an easy walk to some of London's main attractions. I found it perfect for shopping and buying souvenirs. There were also quite a number of restaurants close by and my mum who cannot walk far didn't complain once. Although we ate at the hotel we also sampled London's China Town. It is a four star hotel and lives up to the standard. It is situated close to Buckingham Palace, Harrods, Westminster Abbey and Houses of Parliament. The hotel does not allow smoking anywhere near the building which my mum and I really appreciated because we are both none smokers. The smoking ban made...

Advantages: Car Parking, no noise, close to airport, just what was needed

...Well I have already done an opinion on Crete in general, the hotel I stayed in on the island, and now to continue the series another hotel opinion. This time the Thistle Hotel at Gatwick airport was the first place of stop for the holiday. General ******* Well it may not be the most stylish place to begin a great holiday, but it was sort of essential. We had a flight from London Gatwick airport to Crete’s capital Heraklion for 7:35 in the morning. Coming from the Westcounty it would be a long 3-hour drive to Gatwick to make that sort of time in the morning flight, and not liking early mornings anyway a hotel for the previous night looked a good option. Gatwick airport has several hotels from large chains, so there was plenty of choice. For no particular reason we chose the Thistle Hotel. Ok, so we went of a good reputation...

Thistle Hyde Park, London

Advantages: Outstanding Views, best hotel in London i've stayed at
Disadvantages: couldn't fault it

...I stayed at this Hotel last year, and have been to London 4 times since. Ive stayed in over 10 hotels in the capital and can honestly say this has been my favourite hotel. The views over Hyde Park were gorgeous and gave a lovely view of the london eye, and the flight path. The rooms were a good size and layed out well. It wasn't unclean at all. The staff were extremely helpful and went out their way to help you. The breakfast was gorgeous and provided a great choice. The hotel was close to the local tube station, and close to notting hill and shops. It was central to oxford street and all that London has to offer, without been slap bang in the middle. Only downfall i suppose ( the only one) was that it was upstairs to a petrol station yet it wasnt a problem for me. I would recommend this hotel 100% and enjoyed my stay....

Thistle Selfridge Hotel

...I recently stayed for a night at this well known hotel - I had always wanted to stay there, as it was so close to Oxford Street - a mecca for a shopoholic such as myself! - but am sad to say that I was very disappointed in general with the hotel. I arranged to stay on a Friday night, as I had theatre tickets & did not want to travel home again late that same night. I prebooked the hotel, requesting a double room for myself & my partner, with breakfast included. On arrival, the reception staff were uncourteous and unfriendly. They said as few as probably 5 words to me on checking in, handed me the key and turned away. When I asked where the lifts were, I was tutted at and pointed in the general direction, still with no words spoken. On arriving at my room, it turned out to be a twin room - not very romantic for a London treat...

Advantages: Beautiful setting in a buzzing part of London
Disadvantages: Not suitable for disabled people - no lift

...The Ashley Hotel is a superb, well-priced B&B hotel in a gorgeous location in central London. It is situated in Norfolk Square, Paddington, and is just 2 minutes walk from Paddington station. Paddington itself is a buzzing district of London adjacent to the West End, and is packed full of shops, restaurants, bars etc. Norfolk Square is an oasis of tranquility amongst this. It is a square (obviously) of tall, elegant Victorian mansions, all of which have been turned into budget hotels. The hotels are painted white and cream, and have tall windows and beautiful old railings outside. In the centre of them all is a railed garden. Obviously, it was once a place of residence for people of means in the Upstairs-Downstairs tradition. The Ashley Hotel comprises 3 mansions made into one, and has 50 (I think) rooms.
