More Vimes!
Review of Thud - Terry Pratchett by atytyut2434

Advantages: Vimes!
Disadvantages: Heavy going on the 1st read

...It's a mystery. It's a who done it. It's a crime thriller. It's all of these things and more. A theft, a murder, a vampire joining The Watch. Mr Vimes is going to go spare! We have Dwarves keeping secrets that even Captain Carrot is struggling to get them to reveal and the last person you expect to help crack the mystery is Sybil. We have strippers, pole dancing clubs, Nobby dating a stunner, The Breccia helping The Watch and many other strange ideas that really work well together. We get to meet Vimes as a father and a madman. Its a great mystery. Its a great crime thriller. Its even a good chase story. So many seemingly unconnected threads are finally drawn together in a very good conclusion that feels very satisfying. Good for a re-read as well, always new things to find in this.... Read review

Rare detective thriller
Review of The Ring DVD by damien.gallery

Advantages: Good mystery story
Disadvantages: Ending not quite believable

...My experience of the ring before I got it from my DVD rental list was I had heard of it but never bothered to watch it. I have never been very impressed with horror films and I must say this one has not changed my mind. The film is intended to be a supernatural thriller but in fact it is more a physcological detective type thriller. The story is told on 2 levels, one as a journalist investigating a crime and the other as a supernatural folk tale. Suspense is created by clever use of surreal scenes and gloomy light re-enforced with moments of physcological drama involving the people effected by the events. The film opens with 2 young girls discussing a creepy video that kills anyone who watches it within 7 days. One of the girls mysteriously dies and the other is locked up in a mental asylum as a result. The girl's death inspires her... Read review

sensible to watch it
Review of The Sixth Sense DVD by mcpoeman

Advantages: good all round
Disadvantages: none

...there are many mysteries that are short lived in decent films, such as the crying game and the end of this film, this can only be described as a classic thriller, rather than an out and out horror the effects empoyed here are second to none, and for once the actors are superb even the normally wooden willis shows he has far more acting ability then he has ever been given credit for. the story is about a boy who sees dead people all the time, and doesn't know why, in steps doctor willis to try and help the boy come to terms with his irrational behaviour, you must see this film, its a classic... mystery thriller magic
Review of The Mystery & Thriller Club by carolannjo

Advantages: great introductory offers, available online or post
Disadvantages: need to remember to choose a book or reject editors choice

...grace is that usually the editors choice will be something you'll actually be interested in reading as they are usually the latest mystery/ thriller releases. It is also one of the most easily accessible clubs via internet post or telephone (and you definately CAN speak to a human on the telephone as the very last option once it toggles through all the choices is to speak to customer services). My only complaints are the time it takes to send you your books, I've waited upwards of 28 days so if you're in a hurry or want a particular book for holidays etc need to order it well in advance. Also the amount they charge for postage and packing is a bit steep. One last thing is depending on who delivers the books, as on occasion mine have been left in full view on my front step by the courier and on another my neighbours books were left in MY... Fast moving medical thriller.
Review of Life Support - Tess Gerritsen by mel.thornton

Advantages: Medical thriller, unpredictable, exciting
Disadvantages: Some difficult terminology, occasionally graphic

...'Life Support' is a fast moving medical thriller that stars Dr Toby Harper, a (female) doctor working in a small community hospital. When one of Dr Harper's patients vanishes mysteriously from the hospital and another dies of an unusual viral disease, she sets out to try and find out exactly what is going on. However, someone doesn't want Toby to find out the truth, and will do anything in their power to stop her. This is an exciting, original and well written thriller that drops you straight into the action immediately, rather than taking ages to get going. Toby is a likeable heroine struggling to balance her career against the care of her elderly mother, rather than being overly perfect. There is plenty of suspense and some surprising twists along the way, building to a dramatic conclusion when all the pieces fall into place... Read review

Book Club Visit
Review of The Mystery & Thriller Club by damien.gallery

Advantages: Good value over time
Disadvantages: Expensive

...I joined the mystery and thriller club about 6 months ago. The club offers a selection of horror and murder mystery books at reduced prices. The books are hardback versions of the publications and cost about half the retail price or the same as what you would pay for paperbacks. I have got 2 harback books that do not seem to be available as paperbacks (yet at least). The aims of the club are to bring to the reader the best on offer of horror and mystery thriller (murder) books available at discounted retail prices. The reader benefits from getting hardback books at knockdown prices. Some of the books will be new releases and others not yet available in UK shops. The range is fairly good, mainly murder mysteries and horror with some other books thrown in of mixed variety, such as documentary style or off topic books by well known authors... Read review

Another excellent Jack Reacher thriller
Review of Tripwire - Lee Child by LukeCroll

Advantages: It's in a series, but it's not necessary to have read the others
Disadvantages: Reacher is a character in his own right - you may not like him

...with Reacher’s past. This is undoubtedly Child’s best novel to date. It is full of twists and turns with clues and puzzles throughout the novel. The relationship between Reacher and Jodie develops well and the ending is very good indeed, with an amazing surprise that I was certainly not expecting. The character of Reacher develops well over the novel although I was surprised that Child made no mention of the events of the previous novels, especially the fate of Reacher’s brother. It seems that he wanted it to be read as a standalone novel rather than one in a series. The character of Hook Hobie is excellent and the Vietnam secret is a deep and mysterious one. The book is very interesting and very enjoyable. If you like thrillers, then this is for you. If you liked any of the other two Reacher novels, you will love this.... Read review

The Problems of the Past
Review of Days Without Number - Robert Goddard by PJE_

Advantages: Plenty of intrigue.
Disadvantages: Not his best, no jaw-dropping twists.

...In 1990 Robert Goddard's novel 'Into The Blue' won the first W.H.Smith Thumping Good Read Award. He has variously been described as "the master of the triple double-cross", "the prince of plotters" and "the most compelling storyteller of them all". His novels usually follow a set pattern: Middle-aged bloke going through a mid-life crisis meets and falls for a mysterious woman who then disappears. Somehow he ends up implicated in a suspicious death and finds himself on the run trying to unravel the truth, clear his name and find the lady. He's the thriller-writing equivalent of a cryptic crossword compiler, using the same pro-forma each time, but with different words and new clues. The middle-aged man here is one Nicholas Paleologus, whose family line can, allegedly, be traced back to the Emperors of Byzantium. His eighty... Read review

A Thriller meets A Coming-of-Age story
Review of The Rule of Four - Ian Caldwell, Dustin Thomason by casamia

Advantages: intriguing look at an old mystery, good story
Disadvantages: slow in the middle

...A few pointers first, before I review the book properly: This is another book, which having come in the wake of "The DaVinci Code" has been compared to it: and again, it is unfair to both the book, and to the reader. There are no shadowy sects or cults here, no religion, no mass-perpetrated lie given in the pursuit of control. The comparison is made in light of there being "hidden messages" within a text, and the fact people will kill for them - not to keep them that way, however, but for the academic glory of being the first to publish them. Oh, and more than likely to cash in on "The DaVinci Code"'s success. The next pointer, is the volume of negative reviews this book seems to have garnered all over the internet, and what these reviews seem to focus on. This book isn't just a thriller. It says it right there on the back cover. It... Read review
