Taking Lives, Taking its Time!
Review of Taking Lives (Wide Screen) (Director's Cut) ) by
woof45
Advantages: Easy to watch, Basic Plot, Good crime starting point
Disadvantages: Basic if you've seen lots of crime films before
...that is quite stereotypical in places, letting it down somewhat but overall it is a great piece of crime. If you haven't seen many huge Hollywood type thriller films then this is a good starter that isn't too heavy!
I kept thinking something amazing is going to happen here as there seemed to be a build up to the middle of the film but it didn't really come to anything. Angelina Jolie does suit her part but I can't help thinking she's a bit like her character in The Bone Collector. Ethan Hawke also suits his mysterious character that seems to be in love with Illeana and they do fit together, however sometimes I found that he didn't really suit his part in many places and didn't seem mysterious enough, sometimes a bit open.
The storyline doesn't have many surprises but the different locations and reasons for murder are ultimately the best bits...

More Vimes!
Review of Thud - Terry Pratchett by
atytyut2434
Advantages: Vimes!
Disadvantages: Heavy going on the 1st read
...It's a mystery.
It's a who done it.
It's a crime thriller.
It's all of these things and more.
A theft, a murder, a vampire joining The Watch.
Mr Vimes is going to go spare!
We have Dwarves keeping secrets that even Captain Carrot is struggling to get them to reveal and the last person you expect to help crack the mystery is Sybil. We have strippers, pole dancing clubs, Nobby dating a stunner, The Breccia helping The Watch and many other strange ideas that really work well together.
We get to meet Vimes as a father and a madman. Its a great mystery. Its a great crime thriller. Its even a good chase story. So many seemingly unconnected threads are finally drawn together in a very good conclusion that feels very satisfying.
Good for a re-read as well, always new things to find in this....

Why this is NOT the greatest film ever made – and I’m not afraid to say so
Review of Matrix, The (1999) by
victor
Advantages: absolutely amazing special effects - definitely one to see digitally
Disadvantages: doesn't explore the central ideas like it could of
...The Matrix is the second film from the Wachowski brothers, the first being Bound and is a VERY different film from their first. While their first film was a cool and sexy crime thriller this is a film of huge ambition. At its core it attempts to get us to question the very nature of reality and everything we think of as real. The plot is NOT mind blowingly original and is not a million miles away from that of Terminator – that of machines independently developing intelligence and taking over the world. However in this films reality the human beings that inhabit it are not even aware that this has happened and are happily living out their humdrum existences in a 1990s world (well as happily as they can). Neo played by Keanu Reeves (who does a very good job of looking cool but thankfully isn’t asked to do any acting that will stretch him...

Sainsbury's DVD rental - Good choice!
Review of Sainsbury by
expertop
Advantages: Large Selection of titles, good prices, free trial
Disadvantages: You don't always receive your first choices
.../lesbian, general interest, horror, living world, martial arts, miscellaneous, mystery, music, romantic comedy, science fiction, sports, television, thriller, war and western movies), letter and decade.
When you subscribe you are able to add titles to your list - you can rearrange the titles according to which ones you want to watch first. My experience says that each shipment will have at least one of your top picks, which is good since you will always have something nice to watch. You won't have to watch all of them and then send them together away: I would suggest that each time you are finished with a film you send it back - this will ensure that you will always have something available, although I must admit that their service is very prompt: As soon as they received a title back they will send a new one out and they will notify you via e...

Jaded Jap*
Review of Snow Falling on Cedars - David Guterson by
MALU
Advantages: hard to find
Disadvantages: easy to find
...) most of which belong to institutions or organisations or are the authors of books and articles , this struck me as very odd indeed and I had a bad feeling about it.
Now off to the first chapter beginning like this, "The accused man, Kabuo Miyamoto sat proudly upright with rigid grace, his palms placed softly on the defendant's table - the posture of a man who has detached himself insofar as this is possible at his own trial." Looks like a court room thriller and a murder mystery with a Japanese-American protagonist who is obviously self-confident and convinced that his innocence will be found out.
The trial itself takes only three days and serves as a clamp for the rest of the text; I don't want to use the literary term 'frame' here because it's too weak, 'clamp' implies that without it the story wouldn't hold together. Already on page...

Argento-style thrills for the Millenium
Review of Eyes Of Crystal DVD by
stu-willis
Advantages: In the style of classic Argento
Disadvantages: Runs out of steam
...FILM:
A cop with a troubled past has three problems: a) his new girlfriend is being hounded by a mystery stalker, b) his boss is in hospital dying, and c) a psycho is murdering people, dismembering them and leaving doll parts in place of the missing limbs!
With a few sub-plots to follow (even peripheral characters are given their own points of note - secretive affairs, etc), EYES OF CRYSTAL demands your attention. But it's because you have to really watch it - especially since it's subtitled so it would be easy to lose the thread if you turned away - that the film becomes so absorbing.
It helps that the performances are solid and we get a cast of likeable characters that we can actually care about. Luigi Lo Cascio makes for a convincing lead, handsome but suitably intense and tortured by a tragic past, while Lucia Jimenez makes her...

The Son of Stalin
Review of Archangel - Robert Harris by
brownp1
Advantages: Great thriller written with an expert knowledge of Russia
Disadvantages: none
...What do you do if you’re a respected journalist (The Observer’s political editor) but have Nick Hornby as a brother in Law?
Well this was Robert Harris’s situation and he’s kept up with his in-law by releasing 3 very successful thrillers of his own Fatherland, Enigma and now Archangel all of which take a distinctive view of modern history and weave his own characters into this situation.
The two historical events on which Archangel is based are the death of Stalin with the ensuing political fallout, tied in with the implications of the discovery of Stalin’s diary that is clearly based on the Hitler diaries scam of a few years ago. The basic premise is that a recent poll (although the book was originally published in 1999) showed that over 50% of Russians thought that Stalin was their greatest leader...
