First it was the PC 60 then came the G5
Review of Lian Li PC-60 by  Nick_Endeavour

Advantages: Gorgeous Looking, Heat Dissipation, Plenty of Space, Easy Access
Disadvantages: Awkward USB cables, People's Envy

...as it is positioned right at 90 degrees above the heat sink for the CPU. The front of the case is handy though as it the aluminium cover can be removed and it shows the barebones on the system. The 3 1/2 " devices are hold onto one block that is fixed with thumbscrews on. It is easy removed and after 5 seconds your got your device in your hands. Perfect. Behind the mesh there is another mesh (bigger air intakes) and after that is removed a dust filter (very handy as it stops the gunk getting onto your PC). This is either washable but I recommend just give it a good beating and off with the dust. On the back there are only (almost) thumbscrews. They all make sense though. Once removed the thumbscrews and the side panel slides off. Inside everything has been well placed. Right in front of you there is a cage that will hold up to 5 HDD... Read review

A Great Backup Option
Review of IB-351U-BL by  ChristopherEllis

Advantages: Silent, fan free operation. Looks great. DIY Build
Disadvantages: Slow performer. DIY Build.

...- dissipating damaging heat (electronic equipment + heat = shorter life) from an active HDD into the surrounding air without any need for a fan resulting in cool and quiet operation, thus the name "Icy Box". Additionally (and somewhat confusingly it has to be said) it's advertised as having a screwdriver-less design. This is certainly true to get into the innards of the thing, as four thumbscrews on each corner allow easy access - however to mount the HDD requires 4 screws to hold it in place. You will therefore require a Phillips screwdriver to accomplish this. As I intimated earlier, the IB-351U-BL is in fact essentially just an empty box and some cables. It's up to you to buy the HDD to put inside it. Now, this can get very complicated if you're not familiar with computer terminology as there are a couple of different "breeds" of HDD out there... Antec Solution SLK3000B
Review of Antec Solution SLK3000B by  kevinwj

Advantages: Quiet at a reasonable price, Lots of internal space
Disadvantages: Big, Front door hinges are plastic, Side grills need regular dusting.

...The case is of a good build quality with no sharp edges for a mid-tower style case. The front panel is plastic with a door that swings open from right to left. It comes with a good size bag of screws and 8 drive rails for the 5.25" bays. This case is NOT supplied with a PSU Both side panels come off very easily. The left side has two thumb screws and two quick release clips. The right hand side is held by two normal case screws. The front panel has a press-in clip on each side and requires both side panels to be removed in order to get behind it. Once inside the case I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of space. The 3.5" drive cage is at the bottom and is held in place by a spring loaded thumbscrew and a latch, the thumbscrew can be a bit fiddly when replacing the cage, but once removed the whole drive cage can be unlatched... Good things do come in small packages
Review of Biostar Mini-PC iDEQ 200T - no CPU by  waga

Advantages: very very quiet, small, portable, cool looking, easy to upgrade
Disadvantages: not many DIMM slots, not many PCI slots

...... Another was the fact it was so easy to open up! It has thumbscrews instead of screws ont he case, so that facilitated easy upgrades. The only screw on it was on the PCI/AGP slots, which you could replace with thumbscrews i reckon. CPU temp for a 2.6Ghz Celery never goes above 26oC. Suitably impressed! Running 1 x 60gb + 1 x 120gb deskstar (one on IDE and one on SATA) with Geforce 5600xt, 2x256mb DDR 3200, 802.11g pci, (cant find a ti4600 anywhere) & pioneer 106 DVD drive. Please note you do not need a heatsink/fan as the unit comes with it's own custom one with heatpipes! A Very Very fast system and extremely quiet. Fan speed can be adjusted (it's temperature controlled too) making the pc virtually silent. Blue LEDs are included and was impressed by that! Not quite enough room for a full sized cold cathode tube so I went for a 4... Read review

Speed up your network
Review of 3Com Gigabit Server NIC Network adapter by  paranoidcookie

Advantages: Fast excellent buld and drivers
Disadvantages: Price

...the card. Installation ************ To install the card into my PC Powered down and disconnected the PC's from the mains. Then removed the thumbscrews holding the side panel on my PC then slide off the side panel. Next removed the blanking plate next to a spare PCI slot and pushed the card into the PCI slot. The card should slot in easy then held in with thumbscrew. Putting the side panel back onto the PC the reconnecting to the mains and the physical installation is finished. When Windows started i the card was automatically detected the drive it installed. There s some other 3com software on the CD which can give you statistics and help you run tests. I wouldn't bother installing this onto a home PC unless problems are encountered. Testing out the setup *********************** As well as the network card I also upgraded my... Read review

Shhhhh - I'm listening to the Sonata.
Review of Antec LifeStyle LS138 Sonata-UK by  LegendaryMrDude

Advantages: Quiet, Construction, Sensible Layout
Disadvantages: Weight, Price

...that gathers dust on the inside of the case like you wouldn't believe. The back is a standard layout, coming with a standard ATX motherboard faceplate that can be swapped out for any vendor-supplied plate. There are 7 expansion slots available and a bunch of back-plates provided for further USB2.0 and Firewire ports On the back you also find the thumb-screws (no, not the mediaeval torture devices!) that you can take out to allow the removal of the side panels. Once the thumbscrews are out the case comes apart with amazing simplicity. The side panels have locking handles and pivot out from the front edge until the come away completely giving excellent access to the insides. The inside of the case is remarkably well thought out. There's space for a full-sized ATX motehrboard and a bag of more than enough screws to fit your needs. Cooling... Read review

L is for Literature
Review of Everything that starts with L ... by  digitalburn

Advantages: You get to read my thrillsome answers to Malu's challenge
Disadvantages: There's probably a lot of typographical chaos

...I’ve been feeling a writing spurt coming on for a long time now, and what better way to start off than with yet another challenge? But not any old challenge, Malu’s extra special literature challenge, which, for once, was actually quite challenging. For one thing, I’ve realised that while I have a book on the go most of the time, I don’t really read that many in total. I cribbed the questions from the vvvvvvvvvvvvvery lovely Alex, who also incidentally put the thumbscrews on for me to write this. I'm afraid you probably won't have many surprises (if you know me already), but you might get some controversy). Q: What is your favourite genre? Science fiction, without a doubt. Maybe this will change at some point, but probably not for a while. And within the genre of SF (call is sci-fi and I will give you grief), I’m very... Read review

Deconstructing Deano76
Review of On The Couch with a Ciao Member by  mortimus

Advantages: I interview Deano76
Disadvantages: Deano76 gets deconstructed

...for not following form although Ciao seems to leave me alone for some reason:) Haven't you noticed that minor fact? Deano: Yeah but you don't have an army of loathers on Ciao who watch everything you do so they can mail Ciao at every given opportunity in hope of having me slung off ;-) What's the saying? The devil makes work for idle thumbs. Mort: Which is really odd as we both have the same warped sense of humour and then some! It is something I have never understood. Deano: It's just your prescence, trust me, I wouldn't trust you as far as I could throw ya ;-P Mort: Prescence? Deano: Yes I'd like a playstation 2 thanks, my birthday is July 8th, cheers mate, well appreciated Mort: Answers or I use the thumbscrews:) Deano: WAAAA! Not the thumb screws, how will I be able to hold my pint? Okay, errm, what was the question again... Read review

Government for Everyone
Review of How will you vote in the forthcoming General Election, and why? by  a-true-ben

Advantages: May not be in your short term interests
Disadvantages: No class war!

...'ve never heard an argument for that exactly, or really understood it. It strikes me if you don't think anyone represents your interests, or is worth voting for, you have most to complain about… Perhaps one should deliberately cast a spoilt ballot (e.g. strike through all the names and write 'none of the above'), in order to make clear your principle objection - rather than apathy. I've been tempted to do such, but even if I'm choosing amongst bad alternatives, I'd generally prefer to vote for the least bad. (Compare voting for thumbscrews rather than the electric chair…) Secondly a lot of people talk about 'wasted votes'. They seem to suggest there's no point voting for a party unlikely to win the particular seat, and/or form the national government, and thus that votes for UKIP, the SNP, Greens, even Lib Dems etc are 'wasted'. If you think... Read review
