Thunderbirds are GO! (Sorry...)

Advantages: Story okay for kids, humour brilliant for adults
Disadvantages: Okay so the plot's weak.. .but who cares?!?!?

...I saw Thunderbirds without very high expectations - it looked like a cheesy kids adventure with no real surprises in store. Still, I was interested to see what they did with the concept of Gerry Anderson's vintage puppet show. Taste the cheese. The cheese is goooooooooooood. I wasn't born when the puppets of International Rescue first started strutting their heroic stuff no TV, and by the time I became fashionable again, I was too old to want to watch it. I have seen one or two episodes, but I'm not what you'd call a fan. With cartoons and the like being made into films with varying degrees of success, how would the puppets fare? Thunderbirds Are .... Pretty Good Actually!

Advantages: Good fun, entertaining, well realised
Disadvantages: Weak plot

...It seems ages ago since I saw Thunderbirds. In fact, it was our anniversary on July 25th, so it wasn?t too long ago really, but I have seen two other films at the cinema since. Oh well, Ciao have caught up now and Thunderbirds is finally listed, so let me cast my mind back. Well, a couple of weeks ago is a long time at my age ;-) I have never been a huge fan of Thunderbirds. I remember watching a story with alligators on the projector at home during my childhood, as Dad had it on those old films. Then my son went through a Thunderbirds period and we had to buy him all the toys. (He?s still JeffTracy on Ciao!) But what really made me want to see the 2004 film version was good old nostalgia. Thunderbirds, Ho! No, wait, wrong animal...

Advantages: Incredibly loyal to what made Thunderbirds what it was
Disadvantages: Lacklustre plot

...I?ve been a fan of the original Thunderbirds for as long as I can remember (I?ve even got most issues of Thunderbirds Magazine, in case that didn?t sound sad enough by itself) and had intended to see the new film as soon as it came out. That plan died when I discovered it was coming out two days before I was due to go on a Summer School for which I needed to cram desperately in order to avoid humiliating myself, so as it happened I did in fact see it nearly three weeks after it came out (ie yesterday). As a result of this, there were only 10 other people in the cinema with me, so I can?t really comment in any way on how other people reacted to the film. But to get on with the review? Advantages: nice toys
Disadvantages: don't get vehicles with it

You have to be very delicate with it, because it’s plastic and it can get scratched easily, so watch out! Argos are selling the Electronic Tracy Island for £34.99 now. Advantages: Thunderbird 2 says 5 phrases but the other vehicles only say 3 phrases, the vehicles phrases are spoken by their pilot
Disadvantages: The batteries don't last very long, the vehicles are made of plastic so they may break easily in small childrens hands, the lever used to release the pod sometimes jams

It has the Round House, where you can put TB3 in, the revolving swimming pool, which comes open to reveal TB1 and the Control Centre, which underneath, conceals an opening into the TB2 cave, with moving palm tress and raising run way. At the back there is an opening in case putting TB2 in the front is too hard for the child, due to the fact the front hole is smallish (well it was for me). ...An excellent puppet show that has been laughted at for years and yet it is still on prime time television, so basically it can't be that bad. Despite the mocking and immations, by people who watched it when it was new, Tracy Island is still tipped to be the number 1 selling Christmas toy this year. Stingray, Captain Scarlet and Joe 90 all atempted to mimic the charm for Thunderbirds but never quite got it right. The story line each week is simple, accident happens and international recue is called to save the day!
