The Tibetan Art of Living
Review of The Tibetan Art of Living - Wise body, Wise Mind, Wise Life - Christopher Hansard by
derek-j-a
Advantages: Good food for thought and quite inspiring
Disadvantages: Calls for a leap of faith..
...The Tibetan Art of Living is not usually a book I would read, but I picked it up in a New Age shop on a recent visit to Glastonbury. After skimming through it a few paragraphs intrigued me.
I tend to be a rather sceptical person, but I keep open minded about subjects preferring to EXPERIENCE truth rather than conceptualise it. Before going any further in the review of this book, let me try to explain…
I see an experience as something that is absolute truth - you know it because you experience it. On the hand, a belief is something that may or may not be true. I see it like this… Books generate beliefs, and truth will either be realised or not realised by what you experience after digesting the content of a book and "looking" for yourself.
What follows are the feelings that were generated in me as a result of reading...

Welsh Terrier - always game for a laugh
Review of Welsh Terrier by
rodsbaby
Advantages: Easy to look after, affectionate and fun!
Disadvantages: none I can think of except being stubborn
...when I lost my beloved miniature Schnauzer the house felt completely empty .
I had been used to having a dog in the house all my life and it was awful , no welcome on arriving home and nobody to snuggle up to in the evenings.
I have always been drawn to dogs with what I call "square " faces - ie Schnauzers, Airedales , Kerry Blues etc and remembered seeing some three years earlier a display at Crufts of Welsh Terriers and thinking how much I liked them
So - the seed was now sown in my head - I was going to get myself a Welsh Terrier , only problem now was where to find one !
Living in Aberdeen I discovered there were not many breeders in the area ( or indeed Scotland ) but set about calling a breeder that lived about 30 miles away , I had found his details on the Kennel Club website . This is a great place to start for any...

border terriers - great dogs!
Review of Border Terrier by
Matt_8675309
Advantages: small, cute, doesn't shed hair, good with people, playful
Disadvantages: quite lazy (might of just been mine)
...I had my border terrier, scruffy, for about 8 years before he died of old age. I was in my early teens when we had him so it was hard to lose him. he was a great dog and irreplacable, he was always there for a stroke or play, and he was very obedient and always stayed nearby you. Scruffy could be quite lazy sometimes but would always lie at your feet and show affection, he had a great personality. He loved his walks and trips and would always enjoy chasing a cat or two, but he was very good with people, children, and other dogs. They are adorable looking dogs and love to be stroked, they don't shed hairs or smell which is also a big advantage when choosing a pet, they also don't grow too big and can be left alone and be trusted during the day so they are especially good for families with young children
or busy or elderley people...

West Highland Terriers.
Review of West Highland Terrier by
blueopal5577
Advantages: Healthy pedigree, charming, playful, happy to see you, active, intelligent
Disadvantages: Need to be socialised / desensitised early. Often puppy farmed
...very long shifts, and i was out probably 7 hrs a day working. Westies are quite good at being left alone - although not recommending this is ideal obviously. That said, if you do ever have a problem with barking / whining when youre out, this only ever occured with Rosie when we'd been lazy on walking her... give her a walk and leave on a radio and she was fine all working day.
Tired dogs dont bark. Westies are brainy so if you leave them with dog toys like the Kong chew, where the treats are in the ball, this will stimulate them and distract them from barking. Just as a by-the-bind, we never had any problems with chewing etc. Think westies are more chasers than chewers - a tennis ball will go a long way in pleasing your little terrier.
In terms of walks - my experience was stimulation is more important - toys interaction etc...

A BIG DOG in a small frame - BORDER TERRIERS
Review of Border Terrier by
dawnelliott
Advantages: Hardy, intelligent, tactile, obedient, loyal, child friendly
Disadvantages: Strong willed, boisterous
...I happended upon this characterful chappy during my time as a Saturday Girl in a pet shop. I was taken by the grizzly fur, cheerful manner, and hardy poise of the dog being given to me as FREE TO GOOD HOME.
Back in 1996 Border Terriers were relatively few and far between - bred to work to ground. These days they have grown in popularity and have gained much of their fame through the media and advertising - Pets at Home literature, Pedigree Chum, Pot Noodle and Walls Sausages!
These days you can expect to pay anything between £300 and £500 for a pedigree dog and more for the bitch.
Many variations (size, temperament, colour) have been bred into this breed - I now have 2 Borders; the original Dog and subsequently a Bitch. Both are very different in personality but carry the same intrinsic characteristics:
- A LOYAL...

Enlightenment
Review of Essential Tibetan Buddhism - Robert A.F. Thurman by
frkurt
Advantages: Great essays, great selection of original material
Disadvantages: None
...As a professor of Indo-Tibetan studies, and chair of the religion department at Columbia University, Robert Thurman has had a great career devoted to the task of making the Buddhist teaching and scriptures, particularly those of the Tibetan people, intelligible to students and interested laypersons.
`Tibetan Buddhism increasingly rivals Zen in its popularity as a path of Buddhist wisdom and practice.'
Thurman has written and translated many texts in this area, particularly the well-received `Tibetan Book of the Dead.' In this book, `The Essential Tibetan Buddhism,' Thurman does a thorough job at laying out in concise and accessible terms the history and development of Tibetan Buddhism, as well as an explication and explanation of the core beliefs and practices.
Dedicated to the Dalai Lama (who I have had the honour to be near...

Holly My Cairn Terrier You would love Her
Review of Member Advice on Keeping Dogs by
art1954
Advantages: Great wee friend
Disadvantages: none
...My Cairn Terrier…..She’s Called Holly…
My wife was looking for a cairn terrier for months and just about February of this year we spotted a pup for sale. It was about 30 miles away from where we lived but rather than listen to the wife moaning I decided to give it a ring. There was 3 left but only one was a bitch so we told them to keep it over and that we were on our way.
When we got there we were lead out to a huge farmhouse and there was our little Cairn terrier pup. My wife was all over it and I knew then that I was either going to be the worst in the world or be a lot off money down..Why are these pups so expensive, would someone tell me!
Anyway the Cairn Terrier is a lovely little dog and they don’t grow very big. They are a placid dog with typical terrier hair and a cute little face, a bit...

the eggheaded beauty
Review of Bull Terrier by
karoliina
Advantages: social personality, playful, silly & cuddly
Disadvantages: stubborn, hard to train
...my family has been raising and breeding bull terriers for a good 10 years now, and oh boy, has it been fun. many say that this breed should be extinguished, like its fellow breeds pitt bull and american pitt bull terriers, but i say that's a load of dung. i have never met a person who has actually been in contact and hung out with a bull terrier who shares that nasty opinion. i guess hatred towards bull terriers is similar to racism: unfamiliar things scare people and can lead to negativity.
it is true that the breed was created for dog fights in the beginning, but it has come a long way from its aggressive and brutal ancestors. the few things modern day bull terriers have in common with their ancestors are the aerodynamic egg-shaped head with beady eyes, sturdy and muscular body, and corageous, yet a bit wacky personality...

If he were man he would be a gentleman
Review of Bull Terrier by
shell72
Advantages: Clever, loving, loyal, gentle, funny, playful, alert, intelligent, graceful
Disadvantages: Powerful, expressionless, frowned upon by society
...a short story once about an English bull terrier who was quiet fed up with a pug that was insistent on fighting. The dog simply picked the small dog up and dropped it unharmed into a basket.
When we have adult visitors Reggie gets so excited and will jump up, this I can say has been our only problem however with timing and correction even this is getting better.
He is much calmer when the younger children visit 3 and 4 years old Reggie shows how excited he is and seems to be aware of how gentle he must be as he has never jumped up he will however poke them with his big wet nose instead.
A little history
Did you know that the purebred white bull terrier descended from the cross between the English terrier and the bulldog known then as the bull and terrier breed?
In the 1850's Mr. James hicks of Birmingham made an entirely new...

All for the love of a Staffy
Review of Staffordshire Bull Terrier by
MurkyDismal
Advantages: Friendly, loving, great companions, easy to care for, good with kids
Disadvantages: Don't like other animals, can be expensive
...Origin
Staffordshire Bull Terriers are the 5th most popular breed of dog in the UK, which is also it’s place of origin (Staffordshire, UK) It is the only breed to have the words 'totally reliable' in its breed standard. The breed came into existence around about the 17th century. The breed came from crosses between the old English bulldog and various types of terriers, and was bred for the then popular sports of bull-baiting, ratting and dog fighting. After the sports were banned, the dog was bred as a companion. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier was officially recognised by the Kennel Club in 1935. These dogs were renowned for their courage and tenacity and despite their ferocity in the pit (whilst fighting) were excellent companions and good with children. They are sometimes referred to as ‘Nanny Dogs’...
