An Expedition to IKEA Leads to Expeditious Expediting Of EXPEDIT

Advantages: Cavernous, easy to build (mostly). Neat styling and apparently well made
Disadvantages: Bloody heavy & unlikely to survive taking apart (after all who keeps the instructions?)

Ikea expedit - surprisingly good!

Advantages: easy to build
Disadvantages: heavy

...the place for about an hour before we had taken it all in. All the furniture looked great, and the furnishings were really funky too! We had lots of little items in our basket, but as yet had not decided on the bookcase. So we went to the restaurant to decide. We qued for food, and despite the que, we were served very quickly. The cashier told me to grab a loyalty card from beside (Ikea family card), which got us money off the food, and free coffee. A cooked breakfast for me and my wife, and two coffees for £1.98!! We ate, and drank and decided on the bookcase. We chose the expedit bookcase, which was £106. very reasonable, as the thing was basically a 6 foot long, 6 foot high cube of shelves. I purchased this particular model because it had a Cycling Plus best buy, and had positive reviews elsewhere. I have a daily 22 mile commute, and need to carry quite a bit of kit, including shower stuff and a change of clothes - my walking rucksack was starting to get rather heavy. The rack comes in silver or black - I bought the black one. The Expedition is a heavy-duty rack, weighing in at 900g with a carrying capacity of 30kg, and comes with a handy bracket for mounting a rear light. Advantages: Great destinations, experience of a lifetime, registered charity so not profiting from you, just go for it!
Disadvantages: Ummm.... cost might put people off, although it's pretty standard for this kind of thing it does seem a lot of money at first. You can raise it though!

...I didn't actually go on a gap year expedition, although I have heard they are good. I went on one of their 6 week summer expeditions, to the Tien Shan mountains in Kyrghyzstan, in summer 99. The expedition was fairly typical of the summer ones, with a little over a week spent on a science project, some time doing glacier training, ice climbing etc. and then a two week trek phase. The different types of science work varies with the particular expedition, but often includes ecology-related projects, surveying, geology, glaciology etc. I did a geology project and really enjoyed it. Overall however I think the quality of the science done varies quite a bit, beware if that is your main reason for going, the expeditions are primarily set up for the adventure type stuff. Tick Tock, the sound of my daughter's first watch.

Advantages: cheap, appeals to girls without being too pink

A watch for the 21st century

...I once took my battery operated watch to a well known high street jeweller to have the battery replaced, I was told it would only take 5 minutes & cost £4.99, it actually took 30 minutes & cost me £9.99 as they had problems with the battery. When I took it home the small stop watch function wouldn't work & the built in alarm didn't work either. I took it back & explained it was OK before they touched it, but they refused to accept liability so I was left with a watch that never worked properly again. On another occasion another jeweller presented with a different watch stated that the movement was faulty & would cost approx £75.00 to replace, I left the shop & purchased a battery for 99p from Maplin, fitted it myself (this one had a small slot on the back to access the battery) & has worked perfectly since. Shock and water resistant this watch has nifty little extra functions including an alarm, stopwatch, indiglo backlight, screensaver and mystery answer. Costs around £30 from good jewellers or £25 in Argos. I didn’t pay for mine; it was a prize from the cokeauction. As someone who isn’t particularly gentle with any piece of jewellery, this watch looked just the job.
