An Expedition to IKEA Leads to Expeditious Expediting Of EXPEDIT

Advantages: Cavernous, easy to build (mostly). Neat styling and apparently well made
Disadvantages: Bloody heavy & unlikely to survive taking apart (after all who keeps the instructions?)

As the task neared completion, the question of storage reared its head. Some bookshelves of formidable capacity were needed, even after a damned good weed-out. It needed to be neat, functional and neutral in design. Naturally IKEA's web-site featured in this process, and that's where the Expedit storage system comes into the equation. Ikea expedit - surprisingly good!

Advantages: easy to build
Disadvantages: heavy

...the place for about an hour before we had taken it all in. All the furniture looked great, and the furnishings were really funky too! We had lots of little items in our basket, but as yet had not decided on the bookcase. So we went to the restaurant to decide. We qued for food, and despite the que, we were served very quickly. The cashier told me to grab a loyalty card from beside (Ikea family card), which got us money off the food, and free coffee. A cooked breakfast for me and my wife, and two coffees for £1.98!! We ate, and drank and decided on the bookcase. We chose the expedit bookcase, which was £106. very reasonable, as the thing was basically a 6 foot long, 6 foot high cube of shelves. It looked sturdy,and stylish. So, we picked it up in the self service lobby, and paid for it, along with our other things. I was happy with the level...

Tortec Expedition Bicycle Pannier Rack

Advantages: Versatile, durable, good weight capacity, multiple bike fitment
Disadvantages: Black anodising fades

.... Fitting is relatively straightforward. It does come with instructions, but it is obvious how it supposed to fit - I only needed a quick glance over the instructions. I loosely bolted on the bottom stays; loosened off the 4 top stay retaining bolts; then adjusted the top stays for the correct width; bolted the top stays on loosely; adjusted the rack until it was level; tightened everything down (8 bolts total); gave it a good shake and was good to go after ten minutes. I mount my pannier bags on the lower rail, but it is possible to mount them on the higher rail for better heel clearance - your bag will be bent slightly by the lower rail but it does seem to work OK. My pannier bags have Rixen and Kaul fittings and fits the Expedition rack without any trouble, but cheaper strap on pannier bags should fit too - I have a Halford's Bikehut jobbie...

Advantages: Great destinations, experience of a lifetime, registered charity so not profiting from you, just go for it!
Disadvantages: Ummm.... cost might put people off, although it's pretty standard for this kind of thing it does seem a lot of money at first. You can raise it though!

...I didn't actually go on a gap year expedition, although I have heard they are good. I went on one of their 6 week summer expeditions, to the Tien Shan mountains in Kyrghyzstan, in summer 99. The expedition was fairly typical of the summer ones, with a little over a week spent on a science project, some time doing glacier training, ice climbing etc. and then a two week trek phase. The different types of science work varies with the particular expedition, but often includes ecology-related projects, surveying, geology, glaciology etc. I did a geology project and really enjoyed it. Overall however I think the quality of the science done varies quite a bit, beware if that is your main reason for going, the expeditions are primarily set up for the adventure type stuff. I suppose no-one ever has enough, but there comes a point when I get very tired of seeing toys all over the lounge floor, bursting through boxes and spilling onto clear space. I have been looking around for a suitable solution for quite a while, and whilst looking on the IKEA website last week I realised I could make use of the expedit range of shelving IKEA sell in more ways than one. The shelving comes in a few different sizes and colours. You can buy a set of shelves that are square in shape at approx 70 x 70 cm. This is the smallest they sell and contains four inner square slots. A range of other sizes are available to include eight inner slots, sixteen inner slots and twenty inner slots. The Best Expedition There Is!

Advantages: So so chocolatey!
Disadvantages: So so fattening!

...dinosaurs & a fudge swirl'. Mmm, delicious! Now as with all Ben and Jerry's ice creams they're best eaten once the containers been left out for a while, that way the ice cream gets soft enough to dig your spoon in! Now, we're on an expedition, searching for dinosaurs. The ice cream is soft enough and we begin to dig. Sure enough after a few attempts we come across a brown, gooey fudgey river. Watch out! You don't wanna fall into that! After several attempts we overcome that obstacle and my, it was delicious! It leaves us with a sweet and creamy taste in our mouths, but enough of that, we won't have enough room in us to finish our expedition. We continue digging. The layers of this strange surface are cream with chocolatey brown fudge layers running through. The ice cream has a very creamy almost milky taste to it, it's very pleasant, maybe not...
