Friendly Service - a real gem of a hotel
Advantages: Really convenient location, Good value from all aspects, excells in quality, service and food
Disadvantages: none
...As a regular business traveler, the value and the location of hotels is all-important as well as comfort. Traveling from up north for business in the Devon and Cornwall areas, I needed a room for a stop-over that was easy and direct to get to from the M5 motorway, and came across this hotel. It's set back in a quiet spot just off the main road into Tiverton. I had a great nights sleep after staying at the Best Western Tiverton Hotel. The room was absolutely spotless, the staff very friendly - and facilities surprised me with free Wifi, a printer, flat screen tv, desk/office area and an exceptionally comfy bed. Food and service in the restaurant couldn't be faulted - 2 courses and a pint for under £20. Very convenient location. This hotel is a hidden gem and comes highly recommended...

Perfect Stopover Destination
Advantages: Clean, Friendly, Great and Practical Location
Disadvantages: None
...Last month, I was making a long trip down to Cornwall from my home in North Wales. All I needed was a small and simple hotel to rest my head for a night to break up the journey. I booked the Best Western Tiverton hotel as it was only 10minutes off my route and in a stunning area right by Exmoor. I was just expecting a simple hotel with abdicate facilities but what I got was a spectacular hotel with quality rooms, good food and excellent service. I spent the evening relaxing in the bar area and eating the top class food which was presented to me. After, I retired to my room where I lay my head and instantly feel asleep in their comfy bed and peaceful environment. In the morning I was greeted with a variety of breakfast goodies which I soon tucked into. On leaving I booked my room for the way home a week later. A perfect stopover...

A good little motorway cruiser
Advantages: Easy to park, solid, quiet, brisk and frugal.
Disadvantages: Not as economical as hoped
...so far - except for one other rather crucial point.
One of the reasons we bought the Clio, although it has to be said not the most important, was for its economy. The advertised 64 mpg was quite mouth-watering. After the first 1500 miles, during which the dealer warned that things wouldn't be quite what we expected, the displayed mpg has been between 60 and 68. So far so good.
Travelling from Barnstaple to Tiverton, in March 2008, behind a line of trucks trundling along at about 45 the Clio recorded 74 mpg, which, as anyone who knows that road will witness is no small feat due to some stiff hills. That did impress me, although in all fairness I really was employing a feather-foot. We then continued up to the Lake District, and although the average fell at 70 mph on the motorway it seemed to be able to keep up a pretty good mpg...

Journey From Hell
Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Huge dealays, poor service
...THe experience I am about to describe, you will hardly believe me, but trust me its all true so listen carefully.
My Virgin Train "experience" started at Plymouth train station on a friday evening at 4:55 where I was palnning to catch a train to Birmingham New Street with A pre Booked ticket. As we walked into the station I was told that there were no trains running from Plymouth that evening due to scheduled track works. It seems funny to me that they actually sold me the ticket knowing that this maintainace would be going on, anyway they had put on coaches which took us as far as Tiverton, near Exeter. After arriving at Tiverton an hour and a half later, I borded a train which should have taken round 2 and a half hours, but sadly this was not to be. I finally arrived in Birmingham New Street at 1:45 am, 8 hours and 50 mins after...

Supreme Cacao!
Advantages: Very rich cake in the end result
Disadvantages: Expensive, need a lot of effort into it.
...*Willie's Supreme Venezuelan Black, Rio Caribe Superior 100% pure Cacao Chocolate I will mention the chocolate itself and mention things from the documentary where important.
-- The chocolatier --
Willie came into the public eye after a fly-on-the-wall documentary entailing his efforts to start his chocolate business on pure cacao chocolate and had one belief: Chocolate is an ingredient, nothing more. He moved to Venezulelan to live the lovely lifestyle and invested all his family money into the cacao business; where he planted more than 50,000 criollo cacao trees. He is the first person in the UK since the Cadbury family to grow, cultivate, import and produce their own chocolate.
He now lives just outside of Tiverton with his wife and kids. Why I mention his town is because he essentially lives up the road from my place...

Gothic Grandeur & Glorious Gardens - Devon
Advantages: Flamboyant house with picturesque gardens & parkland.
Disadvantages: Not totally wheelchair friendly.
...Knightshayes Court is a Victorian country house in Bolham, about 2 miles north of Tiverton, in Devon. We followed the signs from J 27 of the M5.
The building was richly decorated by William Burges, who was known for his eccentricity. The style made me think it looked older than it actually is.
Visitors to this flamboyant National Trust run estate, are first asked to visit the old stable block to purchase a ticket, or show their membership card (which gains members entrance to most Trust properties without extra charges). A lot of the car parking spaces here are under the shelter of trees, which we were glad of, as we visited on a warm day.
The house is relatively modern by National Trust standards, but the thing that most struck me about the grandest and largest room, was how much it resembled the Great Hall of Tudor...

Outstanding quality
Advantages: Customer service is great and own products unparalleled
Disadvantages: Too thinly spread
...First off...I am a Sainsburys type of guy....I always used to shop there, I used to work there when I was at college and I continued to shop there after I went into full-time employment...except for bananas...anyone who has worked at a supermarket and specifically in the produce section will know what I mean!
Anyway, Safeway supermarkets aren't particularly well spread out in the Westcountry. Bideford have got one, Bude have got one, but that is North Devon and North Cornwall. Tiverton have got one, but that is East Devon. Exeter don't have one, typically, but I wish they did.
I used to believe that the best own brand products came from the shop adorned with an orange colour scheme owned by a chap called John. However, when I first went to a Safeways...the one in Bideford, the own products were brilliant! The Safeways bakery is...

Hey fatties read this !
Advantages: It was a free sample
Disadvantages: Made me hungry
...with my free bar was a lot of propaganda, Mrs. X from Tiverton lost 3 ½ stone because she fitted these bars into her "busy lifestyle". If it was that busy why was she 3 1/3 stone over weight?
Well enough of my cynical gibbering, all in all the bar tasted awful and it made me hungry, if you need to loose a few pounds eat less of your normal diet and do a little exercise.
Oh and by the way these are retailing for a whopping £3.49 for 3.
Thanks for reading,
Jane x...

The Football Miracle
Advantages: Great writing style and never a dull moment with new action all the way
Disadvantages: Sad ending, pity it had to end in the way it did
...‘The Miracle of Castle di Sangro’ is basically a diary of a football mad America, who becomes obsessed with ‘soccer’ during the world cup that was held in the US in 1994. After being enthralled by the Italian team, in particular Roberto Baggio, he goes off to Italy to watch ‘a miracle’ as a small local town side have gotten through to the Serie B, the equivalent of Tiverton getting into the English division one. He goes off to sample the thrills and spill of a season with a football team with a difference and a certain charm that this really is a miracle and it is a really good read, but first a few lessons:
Geography Lesson:
Italy is split into districts or provinces, some more famous than others, such as Lazio, and others less well know. There is a definite split between North...

Leaves On The Line And Other Detritus
Advantages: A platform for me to write along new lines. Signals in a new train of thought
Disadvantages: I don't see the point(s)
...seriously, if it hadn't have been for these deviations, we wouldn't today have the 'Guilt-Free Shopping Experience' at the McArthur Glen Shopping Centre in Swindon, site of his main railway works.
We also wouldn't have Didcot-, Bristol- and Tiverton-Parkway stations, "Parkway" being a clever way of saying 'this is nowhere near where it says it is" without attracting attention to the fact. Oh no, Bruneau wasn't going to fall for that trick again - building stations in city centres. He'd nearly managed it once with Paddington, but only nearly, and to this day, you STILL don't feel like you're actually in London when you get there.
It's said in building his famous Box Tunnel on the approach to Bath, that on Bruneau's birthday, the setting sun shines through the tunnel for a brief moment. So you see the sun didn't so much shine out of his bum...
