Manchester is Magic
Review of Manchester in general by
duskmaiden
Advantages: Great dining, loads of choice with shopping and cultural activities, easy to get to
Disadvantages: the scallies and the expensive trendy drinking places
...I thought I would do Proxam's My Hometown challenge However I have already written an opinion on my birthplace Dumfries so I thought I would write one on my adopted home town and current place of residence Manchester. It has been five years since I packed my bags and moved to Manchester and I love it. as it is a really homey friednly, down to earth city.
Where Is Manchester?
Yes I know this sounds a silly question but I may as well be thorough! Manchester is in the North West of England in the very south of Lancashire. It lies on three rivers the Irwell, the Medlock and the invisible rerouted Irk. When talking about Manchester I could actually be talking about three different areas. If I was being very precise I could be talking about the city centre. I could also be talking about the larger area covered by Manchester city...

Martins Guide To Manchester - Part 1
Review of Manchester in general by
Nameless
Advantages: Not far off being as good as London, and it's cheaper
Disadvantages: Renovations make it a mess at the moment.
...OK. I have been thinking for a while what the content of my next op should be, and now I have decided. I am doing a guide to Manchester, my home city over several ops.
In this general introduction I’m going to look at what the city has to offer, but over the coming weeks I’ll be doing individual ops on lots of the city’s features.
Manchester really needs little introduction, one of Britain’s most famous cities and birthplace to some world-renowned teams and bands.
It’s a large city often referred to as the “Capital of the North.” In recent years the city has seen massive developments, both forced and chosen. After the 1996 IRA bomb attack Manchester has taken on a new look, and it’s better than ever.
Getting There
Manchester is extremely well serviced by local, national and international transport. A 3 terminal...

Our Days in Manchester
Review of Days Hotel Manchester City, Manchester by
SusanLesley
Advantages: Clean, comfortable, good food, handy for the hospital
Disadvantages: We had one or two problems - see review
...As those of you who have been reading my 'about me' information will know, we have recently had to stay in Manchester to be near my mom who had to go into Manchester Royal Infirmary for an operation, which never happened as she wasn't strong enough to survive the anaesthetic but that's another story.
As I had a lot of arrangements to make Dave decided to take over and find us a suitable hotel for the duration. He wanted to find something really nice but at a reasonable price as this was likely to be the nearest either of us would get to a holiday this year as I am full time carer to mom who has dementia.
Anyway after much searching he finally found The Days Hotel at the end of Sackville Street nearest to the Mancunian Way and thus nearest to the Manchester Royal Infirmary.

Manchester by foot, bus, tram...
Review of Getting around in Manchester by
lannazus
Advantages: It's easy, and if you get the right thing, it's free!
Disadvantages: Maybe a little confusing...
...Oooh, at last I have found my forte to type furiously about! Manchester! I was born here, grew up here, and well, I'm still here! Fantastic place! And if you want to know how to get to places I bet I know. So let me see, what can I tell you....
~ Manchester by foot ~
Okay, so I'm talking about the city center here, and to be to honest, there isn't any reason why you'd need to use public transport to wander around here. In fact, in recent years they have been trying very hard to pedestrianise the whole place so that people run less of a risk of getting run over. It's so busy round here, but everything is pretty much within walkign distance. You have the Arndale center with it's bustling Market Street just outside, then across the road there's the big Marks and Spencers, and then the posh street with Harvey Nichols on. St Anne...

Manchester - so much to answer for
Review of Manchester in general by
nicolemorgan
Advantages: capital of the north, plenty to see and do
Disadvantages: same as in all big cities - just use your head
...Manchester is fast becoming known as the capital of the north and so I’ve decided to take the opportunity on this rather dull day in Manchester, to tell you all about some of its merits. I moved to Manchester just over 2 years ago to live with my partner from the sleepy Shropshire town of Shrewsbury. I’m now considered an ‘honoury manc’ by my boyfriend and his family and I’m very proud to say the least of my new heritage. Manchester today is a big place. While 2.6 million people live within its actual boundaries, over 7 million others live in the wider region, making it second only to London in Great Britain. Now that’s got to be worth writing an op about!

Manchester Outskirts or Manchester Central?
Review of Forte Travelodge Manchester, Manchester by
matty168
Advantages: Good location,cheap price,clean
Disadvantages: nothing really
...As a fairly regular customer of Travelodge,i stayed here with my partner in January and the room cost us £26 per night for a family room which was very good value for money. Of course i had to book this 14 days online but for this price,it represented great value for money. The hotel itself is called Manchester Central which is sort of deceiving really because it is actually in Salford which is not part of Manchester since it is a seperate council authority. None the less it is approx 5 mins walk from Market street and the Arndale Shopping centre. Manchester Piccadilly station is about a 15 minute walk which isn't too bad at all-especially sicne Manchester is quite a flat city with few hills.
The room itself was pretty good as it was very large and had lots of room. Yes it is a family room but i've been in family rooms which were...

Holy smoke. It is Manchester Cathedral
Review of Manchester Cathedral by
duskmaiden
Advantages: Free. Good way to pass an hour
Disadvantages: not as impressive as other cathedrals
...Does Manchester have a cathedral.you, may ask? It is not known for it. Surely Old Trafford is its cathedral. Yes it does. I visited the cathedral and its fairly new visitos centre numerous times. The first time I went with my parents when they were visiit8ing Manchester in October 2002. I subsequently visited the Cathedral and its visitor’s centre to review it for a project for university.
Manchester Cathedral is one of the oldest and most important buildings in Manchester City Centre.
The six hundred year old collegiate church is located in the oldest area of the city near the confluence of the Irwell and Irk rivers. The building although not the most impressive cathedral compared to York Minster or Salisbury, attracts 70 000 visitors each year. Within this there lies a | | |
