Do you really know how to read...
Advantages: A true classic
Disadvantages: Content could be broadened
...Imagine me ? there I was, for decades of my life, thinking I knew how to read a book. I?d advanced through elementary school and prep, into college and finally to graduate school when I discovered, to my horror, that I in fact did not know how to read! Perhaps that helps to explain my affinity to literacy programmes, with whom I will begin working again come this Wednesday.
But no, perhaps I overstate the situation. What I actually mean to say is that it was not until my graduate school days that I happened across the most excellent work 'How to Read a Book: The Classic Guide to Intelligent Reading', by Mortimer J. Adler and Charles Van Doren. This staple had somehow eluded me; familiar as I was with both Adler and Van Doren, I had never encountered this text.
First, a word about the authors. Mortimer J. Adler was one of the pre...

Off to read my book!
Advantages: wonderful story, educational, attractive, cheap
Disadvantages: /
...brought out for fans to enjoy. Among the dolls and collectors? cards, there was a variety of books to be bought. You had your annuals, and your books about Salem, as well as the Sabrina Hand Book (yes, it was in the shape of a hand!). But the collection that I find the most exciting is the books that tell Sabrina?s stories, focusing on her life rather than say from Salem?s point of view. Although I never read them as a child, over the last few years I have been able to build up my collection, and I must say, I enjoy them incredibly now!
In this selection there are a little over fifty numbered books, as well as a few special edition options. Book number # is ?Off to See the Wizard?. Before I read any book I will check the author to see if I have heard of them. The Sabrina books are written by a series of authors, and this one in particular is...

Reading is a dying art
Advantages: Reading is a great way to relax
Disadvantages: Computer games are taking over the young
...When i was at school, many years ago we use to read as a class. This included individual pupils reading parts. Now that i am older i see many of these classic children books being made in to films. i then find myself saying to my own children that i remember reading that at school.
With the upbringing and education that involved reading i was encouraged to read books, which soon became an enjoyable pastime.
The culture now though is based a lot more on computers. Playing all the many games all sorts of different systems. There is also a great deal of communication that include text messages or internet, such as MSN, Facebook or Bebo. On these sites there is a growing concern that our children are shortening the words using almost a different language. This sort of writing does not appear in any books and nor do our schools teach it...

It's good to read
Advantages: A child who can read can always do something on that quiet day and when they are not well
Disadvantages: None
...It is a well understood fact that a child who can read well will do better in their education than one who does not read. Childrens literacy is very important.
As a parent it is quite important to do your best for your child. To encourage your child to read is very important. It is not always easy. Children show interest in books at different ages or not at all.
My oldest child is a girl aged 11. She always has her head in a book. She loves to read and loves to write and I believe she will go far. For her reading has always been enjoyable and so she has had nothing to worry about. However she took some persuading to look at information books rather than just fiction!
My next child is a 9 year old boy. When my son was younger and given little story books to read he was not interested. My son prefered to be doing something...

A girls guide to Reading
Advantages: good atmosphere, good music
Disadvantages: weather can sometimes be bad
...I went to the Reading festival last year, and despite being slightly apprehensive and slightly in pain (i had my appendix out the week before), i had a great time. I went with a fairly big group of friends and we all camped together for the 3 days. Unfortunatly, due to my lack of a) money and b) organisational skills, im not going this year, but have fun to those of you who will.
What i like most about Reading is the fact you get to see so many bands in such a short time. What i hate most about Reading is the grass after its been raining constantly for 5 hours or so.
The bands playing last year were outstanding. i went to see bands that i didnt particually like at the time (i.e Oasis) and even found myself enjoying them.
The atmosphere is good at Reading, everyone seems to have a good time. The highlights last year for me were...

Only 1 Way to read this!
Advantages: Funny, well written, great read, nice characters
Disadvantages: Bad Language
...Every week when I do my big shop in Sainsburys, I can't resist a detour down the book aisle and it takes a great deal of willpower not to throw a few books in my trolley each week! I am often lured in by a particularly nice cover, and Lucy Ann Holmes' debut novel jumped out at me from the shelf due to its totally "chick-lit" look. After reading the blurb, I knew it was mine whether I liked it or not and so it ended up in my trolley and into my shopping bag in my car. I quickly set to reading it as soon as I got home, and it didn't take me too long to finish!
Sarah Sargeant has been single for a while, and its beginning to worry everyone, even her mum and dad. So Sarah decides to embarke on a challenge to find 50 Ways to Find A Lover. With the help of her best friend Julia and flatmate Simon, she goes speed dating, blind dating...

Don't Confine Reading To Bedtime Stories
Advantages: see opinion
Disadvantages: see opinion
...Having been brought up by parents who would were more interested in spending time with me than leaving me to watch the television I learned to read at an early age. My mum used to read constantly to me, everything from Little Miss & Mr Men books (which I ended up being able to recite while turning pages at the correct times by the age of 3) to the writing on signs and such like.
I can't remember a time when I didn't enjoy reading, I could finish a book in a couple of days that would take other children in my class a week or more to finish. I remember being asked questions by my teacher, at about age 8, about a book I'd read because she couldn't believe I'd actually read it from cover to cover in just a few days.
I think a lot of the problems with todays children is that their parents do not have a love for reading. They are more...

I THOUGHT YOU TOLD ME YOU CAN'T READ!!
Advantages: You get to know my ways
Disadvantages: ??
...This is a subject I could probably write a book on, a simple book with lots of tips.
So I will have to be very selective here.
I shall deliberately not use the technical ?teacher talk? vocabulary, not because I do not think you will understand it, but because I want this review to be an easy read for what many people find a boring subject in theory.
I would like you to look at the following to see if you can understand it.
You may be able to read the words, you may not. This depends upon your experience.
Witajcie ? mer haban bekum ? sannunku da zuwa
(I will tell you what this means at the end of this op)
This is what the English alphabet looks like to a child.
Rather daunting so first things first. No pressure.
Pressure is a word to remember for early readers. That with another word ?no?
?No pressure?.

To read or not to read, that is the question
Advantages: Help them in the future as they will have to for exams like GCSE
Disadvantages: Children think to read is uncool and get then over that may be hard
...The are many things children at scholl believe makes them cool or a geek. Geeks are the people who are clever, read and are generally perfect students. In result they may get bullied, were as the troublesome child get more and more popular. How this swapped around i have no idea.
what we need to do is start to act, we need to stop making the intelligent child look bad and help children read more as it is more likely that they will do better in life.
There is no escaping books in land of education, so the best thing to do is try and get children to see that books can be gripping and interesting, even start to offer prises for reading.
For example, if teachers pick out some gripping books and tell children that the person can talk about it the best infront of the class wins a prize.
I am only 13 years old, however i read many books...
