Scuba Diving in Tobago

...It was October. We couldn't face the Red Sea again - and despite the bombings in Sharm there weren't any good bargains. We'd already spent too much money on other holidays last year so we wanted 'cheap and different'. Tobago was the solution and it worked out really well. We booked with Regal Dive - www.regaldive.co.uk - who flew us over with excel airlines. I was nervous - there are some dreadful reviews of that airline doing the rounds. Honestly - no frills but not bad at all. We stayed half the time at the Toucan Inn and half at the Inn on the Bay and we dived with the World of Watersports dive centre which is based at the Hilton. World of Watersports is an excellent dive centre. The equipment is of a high standard, the guys who run the boats and the divemasters are funny, friendly but always attentive to health and safety...

Not, it has to be said, with a 24-hour or 24-minute turnaround, such as Las Vegas, but then, who would have the good taste to go to tobago to be married and then expect to do it with such unseemly haste? I choose to get married in Tobago in September 2000. We spent three weeks in Tobago, choosing to get married in the middle of our holiday; it is a good idea to allow at least a week of romantic anticipation in Tobago first, and anyway you need to be a resident in the country for three full days (not including day of arrival) in order to qualify for a marriage license, and the paperwork will take another three days or so. Trinidad is nice, Tobago is Paradise

...When I decided to go to Tobago, I definitely didn't want to do the usual package trip to the Caribbean. I managed to find a cheap flight with British Caledonian (the later you book, the cheaper it is) and booked a room in a private bed and breakfast via the internet in the sleepy fishing village of Speyside. The whole thing was much cheaper than a package trip and the B&B I stayed at was really warm and friendly. (For those interested here is the link to the site www.caribinfo.com/countryhaven/ ). Speyside was well off the beaten tourist track and most of the non-locals were there to dive as this part of the coast has some of the best diving and snorkelling waters in Tobago. Villa paradise in Tobago

...Tobago ought to be kept a secret. Once you discover it you don't want to share it, but I'm going to anyway. Tourism is the island's main source of income, though you wouldn't know...I thought I was the only tourist there... This place has been left behind in a world obsessed with material things. Tobago people are genuinely nice to each other, the children are a joy - well mannered, shy and pretty. Even the road sweepers wish you a nice day - and mean it. Physical crime is literally unheard of in Tobago - unlike nearby Trinidad. Church is popular on sundays, - and the sabbath respected. You can't get petrol on sundays - everywhere closes - but then so what? The majority of beaches are untouched by man. No bars, hotels or jet skis. ...When my wife and I were newly engaged we both came to an instant agreement that we would like our wedding to be abroad and preferably somewhere in the Caribbean. We looked at quite a lot of the islands and seemed to have came to the decision that we would get married on the island of Grenada until shortly after when the island was hit hard by the effects of Hurricane Ivan. Rally weekend at Tobago

...One summer some friends and I decided to visit Tobago for a rally weekend getaway. Tobago is the sister island of larger Trinidad, and is well known as a popular tourist destination. Being navigational rally enthusiasts, my friends were taking part in the competitions whilst I was there to relax and have some fun. Each day we would go out to the rally and return that evening to ease the stresses of the day's activities. The rally club had chosen James Holiday Resort as there were 24 apartments and they were able to book rooms for all the competitors. Even though the club contacted the resort, we each had to book our rooms separately. The rooms cost approximately £50 per night which was very reasonable. ...As many of you know I was lucky enough to be given a holiday as part of my Christmas so I thought I would share with you where we stayed. We left on the 19th of January for one week half board in the three star hotel D'Or Tobago Palma Nova Majorca. The hotel is on nine floors and has 198 twin/ triple rooms catering for approximately 416 people when full. It is situated on a slight hill 50 metres from the beach and every room has a sea view there are no rooms to the back of the hotel. I believe the area we were in is actually Torre nova which is on the hill between Palma Nova and Magaluf. .
