SLAUGHTERED
Advantages: Thrilling, horrific, compelling
Disadvantages: Graphic descriptions of violent crime
...I'm not at all sure why, but the last few books that I've read in the mystery/thriller genre all seem to have a general theme of sexual deviance; I'm starting to become paranoid that I've become some kind of sexual voyeur via fiction! Or is it simply because murder mixed with sex or sexual crime offers a wide appeal to the book buying public? For now, I'm going to comfort myself that the latter sentence applies. In case you hadn't guessed by now, the book I'm about to review is a crime thriller and the plot centres on sex, sexual preferences, rape and murder, all of which are graphically described!
The book in question is "Blindsighted" by Karin Slaughter, an author unheard of by me until I found the book languishing on a bedside table when I visited my parents in April. I later discovered that my Dad had given up on it as...

Getting Slaughtered!
Advantages: Tasty, well made and warming.
Disadvantages: A little strong and bit on the sweet side.
...Following on from my reviews of beers sampled during my birthday treat, I am today writing about Monkman?s Slaughter. If you haven?t read my reviews already, here?s a quick recap. We went to Cropton (near Pickering) in September and had a brewery tour and a meal in the next door brewery tap ~ The New Inn. A few beers were consumed too?
~~~THE BREWERY.
Brewing has been going on in one shape or form at Cropton since 1613. The first brewery under the name of ?Cropton Brewery? was set up in the cellar of the New Inn in 1984. The present site, on farmland next to the pub, dates from 1994. Increased production and lack of space in the cellar led to this move. Despite this expansion brewing at Cropton still takes place on a small scale and still uses traditional methods and equipment.
Beers are now available from local pubs...
Welcome to the Slaughter
Advantages: Good competent crime thriller
Disadvantages: Couple of holes in the plot
...Indelible by Karen Slaughter actually tells two stories within one book however the events in the present story are linked to the one set in the past so there are a series of flash backs to allow the reader to make some sense of the present day goings on.
When two heavily armed gunmen burst into a small town police station both medical examiner Sara Linton and her former husband police chief Jeffrey Tolliver are caught up in the cross fire. Tolliver is left seriously wounded and a number of his fellow officers are dead, Linton is left as one of the hostages along with two other police staff and a few school children who were on a school trip. It soon becomes apparent that this is not a random attack but a carefully targeted one against Tolliver however the identity of the two killers is a mystery to everyone. The second story takes...
With a Name Like Slaughter....
Advantages: Good Characters
Disadvantages: Ends too quickly
..., this time with crucifixion marks and the race is on to figure this out before any more women are hurt in Heartsdale, Georgia.
I had never read Karin Slaughter before, and was drawn to her fiction by Amazon who recommended her novels to me as I had brought PJ Tracy novels previously. I like the sound of this ? her first book and went ahead and took the plunge. I was extremely rewarded with my decision to read and now have the following three or four books lined up ready.
The feeling of a small town is very well portrayed and there was a cross between claustrophobia and comfort which was disconcerting at times. It almost made me feel wary about reading on because this would have been the way the local residents of this town would be feeling, knowing there was a killer in their community who could strike at any time.
I really enjoyed...
FREE DVDs
Advantages: Free trial, large choice, post included,new realeases
Disadvantages: see review
...I like movies and I like freebies, so when you get offered both in one swoop you?re bound to accept! I used my two week free trial with this company and remained with them for a couple of monthsbefore moving on to try many other companies free trials (and winning a new DVD player on Tesco DVD rental site on their free trial offer). I then had an email from DVDs 365 asking me to go back, and offering me a free DVD if I did so. I had just left Tesco (with my new DVD player) so I chose to go back with them.
∆◊◊ THE SERVICE THEY OFFER ∆◊◊
Basically it?s like going to a video shop and hiring films on DVD, except you don?t pay for each film you chose ? rather a monthly fee for which you can watch as many movies as you can fit in, for us this is usually around 8 a month (2 a week usually weekends...
Surprising Picture Quality - Panasonic DVD-S54
Advantages: Incredible picture quality when compared to my old non-upscaling player with a scart lead
Disadvantages: Sometimes disc drive can be really noisy when DVD's initially load.
...At first I wasn't convinced by up-scaling DVD player technology but was persuaded after reading an article in "What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision" magazine. Unable to afford a Blu-Ray player my sister and I bought the Panasonic DVD-S54 to match our parents brand new Panasonic TX-32LZD80 LCD television as their Christmas 2008 present. Admittedly it was a slightly selfish purchase as we both live at home and wanted to watch DVDs on the big new TV ourselves! We bought the player from the electrical retailer Comet for about £100 just before Christmas so there were no discounts applied.
On Christmas day when opened we found a relatively small box tightly packed with the player in polystyrene packaging. All the components such as cables, remote and manuals were well presented in their own protective plastic bags, to keep them protected. The player...
KISSCUT - KARIN SLAUGHTER.
Advantages: Better than the first
Disadvantages: can be a bit slow in places
...Kisscut by Karin Slaughter is the second in a series of books that feature Police Chief Jefferey Tolliver and Sara Linton the town's paediatrican and medical examiner to name just a few familiar characters.
I like this style of writing because it features characters you know and you can "follow their fortunes" as it were. There are issues tackled within this book that were touched upon in the first, "Blindsighted" but saying that, it isn't necessary to have read it because Slaughter does well in explaining the gist of things without being repetitive.
Kisscut focuses on what seems to be an individual tragic shootout at the local skating rink on a Saturday night. Tolliver and Linton are there and as Police Chief and Medical Examiner, become involved. At first glance this appears to be a tragic one off incident but the autopsy...
You won't forget your first Slaughter
Advantages: Disturbing Dark Menacing Repulsive
Disadvantages: Disturbing Dark Menacing Repulsive
...Karin Slaughter has been writing novels and short stories since she was a child. Until recently her trade was commercial sign-making in Georgia, USA, but she sold her business to pursue a writing career. The success of her first published novel and bestseller, BLINDSIGHTED, has underlined her true calling as an accomplished fiction writer.
KISSCUT is Slaughters second offering, an impressive follow-up continuing in her gritty, edgy style.
KISSCUT is certainly not for the faint-hearted, graphic, repulsive, horrifying scenes lie in wait, acts of intense evil and layer upon layer of deception?. ?Caveat Reader? -Be warned?.
Saturday night in small town America, the roller rink is the place to be, a community gathered to pass the hot sticky weekend. Jenny Weaver, a nerdy overweight teen, walks into the parking lot waving a gun...
The Demon House Disaster
Advantages: A few funny moments, one disgusting scene of gore, strangely entertaining.
Disadvantages: Poor script, some dreadful performances, a lot of unfunny jokes.
...'The Slaughter' is a 2006 comedy horror film written and directed by Jay Lee. The film is tacky and cheesy but it doesn't attempt to be anything different; it's a low budget horror and if you take it as this and don't expect much more from 'The Slaughter' then you'll surely not be too disappointed. 'The Slaughter' is not the greatest comedy horror ever created, it's a bit of fun though and if you want to kill 96 minutes then why not do so with this 2006 Jay Lee production.
Six college students have here taken on a job to clean up an old abandoned house. A property developer wishes to sell it on and the students therefore must get it looking nice and tidy and bring this abandoned home back to a state fit to live in. What is not realised however is that in doing this an ancient evil demon has been awoken. The house has been left empty...
A Faint Cold Fear - Karin Slaughter
Advantages: Another real page turner with a twist in the tail
Disadvantages: Hard to put down
...In this, Ms Slaughter's third thriller, we are treated to more of the same tension and gore we have come to expect from the earlier books. The character's are now more developped and more time is given over to the plot and less to background, which is great if you've read the first two, probably a bit confusing if you haven't.
Once again none of the main character's are discussed in the first person (I), rather we get insights into the minds of all three main characters through the third person (she/he).
When a college boy's body is found near a bridge suicide is the obvious conclusion, until Sara Linton's pregnant sister is stabbed nearby. Then a girl at the same college turns up dead, her death unconvincingly staged as suicide, and Sara and Jeffrey are forced to treat the boy's death as suspicious. To make matters worse former...
