...So there I was with a trip to Leicester from North Wales, so I visited a website to get a route map, OH NO! How confusing, so I bought myself the new TomTom One Local from my local Currys for only £199.98. After getting the TomTom home and unpacking it I couldn't believe how compact the new model was compared to the older models that I had used in the past the new TomTom One is about 2.8cms deep, 9.5cms wide and 8cms high. In the box you get the SD card with the UK map on it as well as a CD with TomTom Home, which I will mention Later, the in-car charger, cable for plugging the TomTom into your PC, windscreen mount, registration card and the manual that you need to get the TomTom running. Advantages: Works right across europe

...I recently acquired the TomTom GO 710 from Halfords I paid approximately 300pounds in store. The box it came in was nice and compact it contained;1GB SD Card, Carry Case, Home Dock, Car Charger, Windscreen Dock, External Microphone, Quick Start Guide and the TomTom unit itself. The TomTom has a Lithium-Ion battery (4 hours operation) which enables the TomTom for lengthy use without charging though a car charger is included with the package. The dimensions: are 112x81x66 mm and it weighs: 300 grams so although it is light it is a little large to fir comfortably into most peoples pockets should you be walking with the navigation unit. Though it would fit into a large coat pocket or small bag. TomTom though have produced a handy accessory pouch which is in stores now at 30pounds for a leather one. ...I have spent along time looking at the Sat Nav market (approx. 12 months) and was really waiting for prices to drop and to get a model to my needs. So far I have this with the TomTom One XL. The best thing for new buyers is that it works straight out the box. No need to pug it into your computer, but put in the destination that you desire and off you go. The battery life is not brilliant (TomTom state is has a battery life of 2 hours) but can you really complain when you have it in the car and all you have to do is pug it into your cigarette lighter? Which can I remind you is pretty much free energy don’t forget. One negative point would have to be there is no AC power adapter (they can be bought separately), so that you can charge it at home – but then saying that why not just charge it in the car. Wires!! ...I use TomTom Navigator 6 with my mobile phone - MDA. I have also tested nearly all other software for navigation so i will try to compare. TomTom has the best menu navigation - it has only 5 items menu so it is possible to browse in menus when you are driving even if you have got a small display on your PDA. The menus are simple and it is very easy to adjust something very fast. Maps for TomTom are made not by countries as it is normally done by the others but by packs of countries so you dont need to switch maps so often. On the other hand if you choose igo2006 for example you can have all the maps at once and then no need to switch anything - there brings TomTom some difficulties when you are passing borders between two map sectors. ...on auction sites for the extras as Tom Tom charge £5 for each voice (I bought 20 celebrity voices for £5). There are some annoying disadvantages though. The mount for the windscreen is weak and often on a journey the display will start to droop until it is facing the floor. Also as a test I asked it to plan a route to my local garage. It managed to take me a strange and very long way round. Tom Tom also charge a yearly fee if you want to subscribe to extras like traffic congestion, which I believe is free on other devices. The other disadvantage to this is that it has to be connected to your mobile phone when you are travelling and it is taking info from there website, so you are also paying for an internet connection on your mobile aswell.
