...I travel all over the country as a rep and rely on Tom Tom Mobile very heavily. I've happily visited several customers all over London and not had to look at the map! One of the best things about Sat Nav in general is knowing what time you are going to arrive (subject to road delays and accidents), this is brilliant for me when dealing with clients and planning my journey. I use Tom Tom Mobile with a Nokia 6600. The screen is big enough to see the map and directions well but I do struggle with the small text whilst driving along but may be my eyesight isn't as good as it used to be! I normally put in a post code to set a destination. Only the first 4 digital in the postcode are used, you then have to select a road, and then a house number. TomTom To the Rescue

Advantages: Easy to use, better than an A-Z
Disadvantages: Bit expensive, battery is not great

Advantages: Great customisation features, big clear screen, easy to use
Disadvantages: Battery life, no wall charger included

...believe you can attach headphones to it so not to attract attention to yourself with the spoken instructions! This versions of the TomTom includes the latest maps of the UK & Ireland. You can get some TomTom's which have maps of Europe in them, but as I'm not planning on road trip around Europe anytime soon I went for the UK & Ireland version. Another big factor on choosing this one was the fact that the Europe edition was £80 more expensive at the time & after checking just now I noticed they haven't changed in price as I presumed they would have done either. The TomTom Go 520 has a 4.3" touch screen, this is bigger than a lot of the competition brands of sat nav & one more reason I went for the TomTom. ...The TomTom Go 520 has a good size screen and is very easy to use. Its packed with features and my favourite is the bluetooth connection to your mobile, even allowing the extraction of numbers contained within your phone book (its handy to note you can duplicate your phone book onto the TomTom, meaning a back up of your phone contacts). When making a call the sound quality is pretty good. The navigation is easy to use and I have had no problem with GPS signal (unlike my previous sat nav). It identifies safety cameras and also alerts you if you are breaking the speed limit, however this feature is also the only drawback I have found. Occasionally it will get the speed limit you are in wrong (the other day I was on a dual carriage and it instead the speed limit was 30m.p.h.). ...I have owned my Tom Tom for nearly two years now, and use it most days for work. The system is really easy to use thanks to a touch screen menu system, using symbols as well as descriptions for the main menu options, and it is really easy to program and set up with your own details. For the most part, the mapping is accurate and gets you to where you want to be, but as with all sat nav's a degree of common sense is required, and you should never take all of the instructions too literally! What I have been dissapointed with recently was the performance of the system in Cornwall. No matter how you program it the Tom Tom will always lead you down narrow country lanes rather than the safer A or B roads, and very annoingly it was convinced that we were in the middle of a field when on some parts of the A30, despite updating the maps...

Tom Tom ? - Ding Dong ! . .

Advantages: Just Brilliant.
Disadvantages: Price, risk of theft, otherwise none.

The carrying cases are OK to keep the dust off them, but there is not sufficient room for the mounting bracket or leads, I keep mine in an old cine camera case, just the job. A friend of mine stows his in a little biscuit tin! If the carrying case had belt loops, you could simply remove the unit from your car, and take it with you. The fact that it does not is a shame, and perhaps this is why many are left in the vehicle. My Tomtom gets a lot of use in HGVs, and I have been caught out by low bridges, there is software out there which gives bridge heights, although I have not used it yet. Tomtom will also want to send me down roads which have weight limits, luckily as I drive past these roads, the trusty Tomtom simply re-routes me without me having to do a thing. I can't fault TomTom on this really...
