CRY WOLF (2005)
Review of Cry Wolf DVD by
Moogiekupo
Advantages: Sophiscated storyline, unpredictable and swaying viewer's opinions throughout.
Disadvantages: Some under developed characters. Not for the classic slasher fans.
...~~~~~~~~~
SYNOPSIS
~~~~~~~~~
The film begins with meeting a wealthy English boy called Owen. He was sent to American's boarding school by his father, as the only thing that revolves around his life is his job, so he has little time for Owen. As for his mother, there was no sight or mention of it.
On Owen's first day at school, he met a confident and popular girl called Dodger. She is attractive, yet obviously cunning and is troubled. But Owen was grateful that Dodger would even speak to him and was willing to take him under her wings. During the film, you will also meet Tom, Owen's roommate, who coincidently belongs to Dodger's gang. One night, Tom wakes Owen up to meet his gang in the school chapel. This was obviously forbidden, but the thrill of it seduced Owen to go there.
On the meeting of the gang, who they called...
Watch what crying wolf did to this lot..!
Review of Cry Wolf DVD by
ChemicalRomance
Advantages: The Twisted Characters
Disadvantages: The Boredom Waiting for the Murders
...towards the new guy.
As a result of an assignment set in journalism class, the gang set about creating an email, describing details of murder and deaths from a killer called 'The Wolf.' they create a look for this killer which is mainly the only thing that makes you laugh about this film , as it is a little dull until the deaths begin…
'The Wolf's' attire was and orange ski mask, camouflage jacket and a hunting knife… identical to those owned by a certain journalism teacher…!
As a result of the e-mail strangle things begin to happen, mostly blamed on Owen; the trashing of Tom's room, the strange instant messages, and the beginning of the murders. Although the plot to scare these teens is a little tedious and perhaps its just me, but I was more interested in getting to the gruesome murders.
At this point the strange things begin...
Board the Day-Glo bus back in time
Review of The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test - Tom Wolfe by
ally2kc
Advantages: Fantastic adventure written in awe-inspiring language
Disadvantages: Author occasionally feels disconnected from his story
...Author: Tom Wolfe
Publisher: Farrar, Straus and Giroux
Publish Date: 1968
No of Pages: 368
Genre: Somewhere in between the Beat Generation and Gonzo Journalism though not actually directly touching either.
RRP: £8.99
Amazon Price: £7.19
***About the author***
Wolfe, born in Virginia, earned not only a BA but also a Ph.D in American Studies through Yale in 1957. A lucky break arrived the year before he graduated when Wolfe landed a job as reporter on the Springfiled Union. This job turned out to be the beginning of a 10-year career in newspaper which included stints with The Washington Post and the New York Herald-Tribune.
While working as a busy journalist in 1965, Wolf wrote and had published his first book "The Kandy Coloured Tangerine Flake Streamline Baby". The book quickly became a best seller and paved the way for two...
It's NOT rocket science
Review of The Right Stuff - Tom Wolfe by
Silverback
Advantages: Gives you the real story behind US space exploration
Disadvantages: He can overdo the exclamation marks
...This book could have been a straightforward tale of adventure and heroism. A glowing account of how seven plucky astronauts fulfilled the American dream. But for Tom Wolfe, that would have been a serious dereliction of duty. His job is to tell it like it was. And in The Right Stuff, he takes the story of the test pilots who became the first Americans in space and exposes the rivalries, the cock-ups and the political manoeuverings that lay behind the public relations gloss and sentimental heroics that were fed to an eager public 40 years ago.
That's what made this book a bestseller and an award-winner when it first came out in 1979. It's what makes it as fascinating as ever now, whether or not you have the slightest interest in space flight or American history.
The book is a journalist's re-creation of what had happened 20 years...
Hip Cats And Groovy Chicks
Review of The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test - Tom Wolfe by
pennii
Advantages: The craziness of it all
Disadvantages: The language of it all
...19 years before he wrote The Bonfire Of The Vanities, Tom Wolfe hung around with Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters and chronicled their drugged-up antics in this book. To give you an idea of the way it was in the swinging sixties, this is what a certain Terry Southern said about the book in his review: ‘Tom Wolfe is a groove and a gas. Everyone should send him money and other fine things. Hats off to Tom Wolfe!’
Tom Wolfe may have been a groove and a gas way back then, but his style doesn’t translate too well today. He writes as if to please the Pranksters, or maybe this was just the way they wrote in those days. His sentences are often unfinished and they…
He wrote a lot of long words and in the language of the day, with loads of rhetorical questions and all manner of craziness. Sentences are often just...
Masterful portrayal of some universal truths
Review of The Bonfire of the Vanities - Tom Wolfe by
xxxxdomixxxx
Advantages: Good characters, excellent writing, interesting plot
Disadvantages: A little on the long side
...Having read several Tom Wolfe books now, I have come to agree with Oscar Wilde's sentiments that art both reveals and conceals the artist. This book, as with his others, features male characters as the leads. Women are merely incidental in the story line, leaving the plot free to move on, or allowing Wolfe a way of showing his male characters from another's, perhaps more realistic, perspective. Tom Wolfe doesn't do this in a sexist, denigrating way, he simply writes about what he knows best.
The male characters here are strong and proud of their manly physique. In the case of the main character, Shreman McCoy, this is his chin, in the case of the prosecutor Lawrence Kramer it is his strong neck muscles that are his pride and joy. The insightful way in which Wolfe writes these characters and their thoughts of themselves suggests that he...
So-so :S
Review of A Man in Full - Tom Wolfe by
xxxxdomixxxx
Advantages: well-written, entertaining
Disadvantages: not as good as bonfire of the vanities, slightly silly ending
...This is another epic tale from Tom Wolfe. The book is again massive, and written in a similar style to Bonfire of the Vanities. It is a tale of Charlie Croker, a millionaire property developer whose universe is falling down around him, Roger White, a lawyer, his client, a coloured atheltic star with a bad attitude, Raymond Peepgass, a bank official with money problems and Conrad Hensley, an honest, hardworking man who ends up in prison by a series of unfortunate events.
Note how none of the main chracters are women: just like in Bonfire of the Vanities, women are incidental, used to progress the plot by their impact on men rather than as important in their own right.
The true anti-hero is Charlie, about whom the book is really centred. Just like Sherman in 'Bonfire' he is a bit of a megalomaniac: self-absorbed and out for himself...
Would you really have acted differently...
Review of The Bonfire of the Vanities - Tom Wolfe by
ImogenW
Advantages: Writing in a class of its own, and a morality tale for a greedy age
Disadvantages: An exhausting read
...Most of us first came across Tom Wolfe's writing, I suspect, when as teenagers we surreptitiously read his account of a group of acid heads and their trip across America in a bus. The Electric Koolaid Acid Test it was, and I for one was handed it at the back of a classroom, with the vague feeling that because it was about drugs it must be illicit. In fact, I didn't understand much of it and dismissed the author as an old hippy - which is pretty much the tag he had acquired when the book was published. He was, in fact, nothing of the kind. He disappeared for over a decade after the acid-test was published and when he returned, found he was still stuck with the same old tag: until this book was published. At that point, America realised that the old acid-head hippy was in fact their best novelist in a generation.
The Bonfire...
An 80s classic
Review of The Bonfire of the Vanities - Tom Wolfe by
Squonk
Advantages: intelligent, tight and utterly compelling
Disadvantages: looks a little dated
...An 80s classic, Tom Wolfe's epic novel of New York looks dated in areas and may have lost some of the power and excitement which greeted its cutting portrayal of the city upon first publication, but it remains a superb piece of dramatic, comic fiction and an essential read which had me enthralled from the outset. Wolfe creates a diverse range of rich characters including a successful Wall Street bond trader, a corrupt Harlem preacher and a washed up Fleet street hack and weaves them into an intricate story with 1980s New York as a sumptuous canvas. Witty, tight and insightful, Wolfe captures a time and a place perfectly in an enthralling story which was rightfully acclaimed as one of the most impressive American novels of the decade and twelve years on is highly recommended reading....
