.... It is basically like having a brilliant navigator sitting next to you! The TomTom I got costs around £180 and only has the UK and Ireland maps so if you were to want to use it abroad then you would need to either buy a different model or buy the maps from the shop although I'm not sure how much it would cost. It does obviously have other features which I will come onto a bit later on. Inside the box is the TomTom, a car charger, installation CD, manual, cradle and window mount to stick it onto your car window. To get it up and running is very simple; plug in the charger to your cigarette lighter and the other end into the TomTom, clip the TomTom into the mount, and stick the mount onto the window using the sucker that is attached. ...I was bought this for Xmas and I felt like a kid again. The special offer at Curry's brings also a very welcome TomTom traffic module, this is actually just a re branded TMC module (the little green cameras on motorways) and works via RDS but hey on its own is about £60 so why not. Open another box (inside the big one) and you finally you find the TomTom, sitting there looking at you pretty in a nice gleam smile. I was just dying to open it up and try it. Common sense though suggested putting it on charge and playing about with the rest of the gadgets. This is where the first problem arouses. There is no jack to plug the charger in the TomTom and you have to use the dock, which means you have you have a dangling USB cable down in the living room because some genius designer though to make it built in. ...So there I was with a trip to Leicester from North Wales, so I visited a website to get a route map, OH NO! How confusing, so I bought myself the new TomTom One Local from my local Currys for only £199.98. After getting the TomTom home and unpacking it I couldn't believe how compact the new model was compared to the older models that I had used in the past the new TomTom One is about 2.8cms deep, 9.5cms wide and 8cms high. In the box you get the SD card with the UK map on it as well as a CD with TomTom Home, which I will mention Later, the in-car charger, cable for plugging the TomTom into your PC, windscreen mount, registration card and the manual that you need to get the TomTom running. .... I also use my TomTom in trucks, and find the battery life is ample, considering you can leave it on charge all the time, except perhaps when you need to use the cigarette lighter socket fto charge a mobile phone. I have made a home charger, by joining a cigar lighter socket to a transformer, the charger works on 12 and 24 volt so this rig saved me £20. The Tomtom is actually five volts, so as long as the transformer gives out between 5 &24 volts it will do the job nicely. As for the carrying case made especially for the job, these are OK, but there is no room for all the mounting bracket & leads, I just use an old cine camera case, just the job. As mine gets a lot of use in artics, I sometimes get caught out by low bridges, there is software out there which gives bridge heights, although I have not used it yet. Likewise, TomTom...
