...I purchased TomTom Navigator along with my HP iPAQ 2210 about 10 months ago. I travel about 18000 miles a year and this product has been a great asset. It saves me having to make route notes and keep referring to road atlases. For town driving it is even better as road maps do not show all local roads. I initially purchased version 3.0 but have now upgraded to v3.03 (427). I use it with a wired GPS receiver which simply plugs into the cigarette lighter in the car. In most cases you run the application and then bring up the Navigator Menu. I recently took a trip to Europe on my bike and got a copy of TT Nav 6. Not actually knowing much about where I was didn't give me much confidence but the Vario 2 with the Nav 6 installed was a lifesaver. Map are so detailed and being on the bike meant fuel stops were frequemt but I was able to plan this using the software. The 3D maps were good but I prefer 2D maps as I work a lot with paper maps and charts and it's just what I'm used to. The colours used were good, each screen was easy oto focus on with a good contrast of colours used. My experience in Europe was limited to planning and frequent checking of my route upon stopping. Disadvantages: Slow cold start time on GPS reciever.

...TomTom Navigator brings the market leading SatNav software and functionality to a PDA. Plan your routes with your preferences (avoid toll roads, fastest, etc). The software is very easy to install - just run the CD on your computer and it copies the files to your PDA - easy! This does take a long time however so dont think you can just install and use in 5 mins... set it going whilst you are doing something else and leave it to it. Once the software has been installed and the maps copied across to your PDA, you go through a setup program on the initial load. You configure your GPS receiver (bluetooth or wired) and set up your preferences - voice, metric/imperial etc. This is easy to complete and a nice welcome to the software. All across Europe with my TomTom

...- Position lock can take up to 3 minutes, depending on sky visibility, whether you are moving at the time and weather conditions. Once locked though it is very reliable and has performed well in dense cities with tall buildings and dense woodland in country lanes without losing lock. In fact, the only time I lose a valid GPS signal is indoors and underground. The antenna is very unidirectional and so you do not have to leave the device facing upwards, like most other types. I've often used the navigator on foot and there's no problem with just keeping the receiver in a coat pocket or handbag. When trying to acquire a lock on foot do not stand close to a building as it's much harder to get a signal. Stand in an open area with a good view of the sky. The built-in lithium-ion battery performs well and in continuous use lasts about 10 hours...

Is it worth the upgrade from Nav 2 to Nav3

Advantages: voice guidance!, easy to use, portable, congestion charge aware
Disadvantages: only navigates via roads, so no going thru parks., maps are about a year out of date, cost of aditional maps

...The Navigator series of software allows your device (in this case an ipaq pda) to turn into a fully fledged GPS tracking system. Now, the spec: I am running Tomtom 3 on an Ipaq 36xx series with a dual CF slot jacket with a Pretec GPS card and and a 256MB CF card. This was the hardware I was using from navigator 2. I bought this a) portability - i can use it in the different cars I have b) updated maps - maps are only a year old(ish) c) cheap - cheaper than a in car dashboard version (esp the mercedes one at £1800!!) I had Tomtom nav. 2 on my ipaq and decided to upgrade to navigator 3. First thing to note is that it *will lose* your stored addresses/fav locations! so be warned! You need tom-toms to find your way

Advantages: Large clear menu for touchscreen. Quick setup to navigate to postcodes. Clear driving instruction.
Disadvantages: Poor POIs, Lack of route preview. Missing villages. No cam preview found.

...On the basis of good reviews I bought Navigator 6 Western Europe (Nav 6) for my PDA to replace an ageing Miomap programme. Having removed the Miomap programme the TomTom Nav 6 installed quickly and easily and after selecting a few options, was up and running. The selection of only 2 UK voices was very disappointing, and neither really appealed. Navigating to a post code is simple to set up, but I could not preview the route until the unit connected to satellites. I had to exit the navigation screen an select a view map icon to see anything. Typing in a town name is predictive, letting you select a town really easily. Menu navigation is easy with nice large icons and a maximum of 6 to a screen.
