...I recently decided to upgrade my car to a newer model and while doing so decided that I needed to take the plunge and invest in a sat nav system. My only previous experiences with in car GPS systems involved out of date maps and a very robotic sounding woman screaming "you've gone the wrong way, turn around now!" so I decided to do some research and plumped for the new TomTom One v4 GB. The item came in a bright orange box complete with car charger, USB lead and set up manual. One item that I would have liked to have seen included is a charger for a mains socket so it could be charged in the house prior to driving but alas that isn't the case. ...I don't know too much about in-car satellite navigation systems (satnavs, as they call them) and it's not that I have used a number of devices so that I can compare the pros and cons of one against the other. But, I am a very satisfied user of TomTom One and would definitely recommend it to any potential buyer. We bought the TomTom One about 4 months ago and to date, it hasn't given us a chance to regret our decision. The TomTom One is one of the numerous entry-level satnavs in the market, but does not disappoint with its loads of features and reasonable price (We bought ours in Aug 2006 for £199). It has become very popular in the market. There are, of course, other companies which offer entry-level devices at a much lower price, but I can say from my and my friends' limited experience, TomTom devices are way ahead in terms... ...to the one chosen if you feel it's not the best one. You can enable or disable the TomTom traffic information (subscription needed for this). You can add routes that you do often to your favourites so that they are easier to access in future. You can enter your home address and tell your device to navigate to home, this way you'll always know how to get home from your current position. The system will also tell if there are any upcoming traffic jams and if possible will give you an alternative route. If you still happen to take a wrong turn it will know and tell you to and navigate from your new position to get you back on track. Points of interest are very helpful, if you use this option it will tell you where the nearest petrol stations, hotels, campsites, garages and even car parks are. ...So there I was with a trip to Leicester from North Wales, so I visited a website to get a route map, OH NO! How confusing, so I bought myself the new TomTom One Local from my local Currys for only £199.98. After getting the TomTom home and unpacking it I couldn't believe how compact the new model was compared to the older models that I had used in the past the new TomTom One is about 2.8cms deep, 9.5cms wide and 8cms high. In the box you get the SD card with the UK map on it as well as a CD with TomTom Home, which I will mention Later, the in-car charger, cable for plugging the TomTom into your PC, windscreen mount, registration card and the manual that you need to get the TomTom running. ...Having only had my Tomtom one for a short time I now wonder how I got on without it!! There is very little to dislike about the product, in fact my only piece of advice is don't ditch the A-Z just yet as the navigation is not 100% accurate, however this is something common to all GPS not just Tomtom. In general it will navigate me within sight of where I want to be, even if it doesn't get me to the doorstep. On the plus side, the Tomtom has a clear screen showing easy to follow directions. You can also change it to night colours if you find the brightness too distracting. You can also set the map to switch off when driving at top speeds, and just rely on the voice if you are worried about distractions. The voice is very loud, which means you can hear it when driving a top speeds even with the radio on. The functions are easy... Read review

...I have spent along time looking at the Sat Nav market (approx. 12 months) and was really waiting for prices to drop and to get a model to my needs. So far I have this with the TomTom One XL. The best thing for new buyers is that it works straight out the box. No need to pug it into your computer, but put in the destination that you desire and off you go. The battery life is not brilliant (TomTom state is has a battery life of 2 hours) but can you really complain when you have it in the car and all you have to do is pug it into your cigarette lighter? Which can I remind you is pretty much free energy don’t forget. One negative point would have to be there is no AC power adapter (they can be bought separately), so that you can charge it at home – but then saying that why not just charge it in the car. Wires!! Might think it’s a bit mess... Read review

...to turn onto a road and how far this road is, what exit to take on a roundabout or to keep to one side of the road as it breaks into two roads soon. All the instructions are also on the screen to help even more. The screen also includes how fast you are going and how long the journey will last and what time you are expected to arrive at your destination. The TomTom 520 has a very good size screen with it measuring 4.3" which is also slightly bigger than the basic TomTom model. I wanted a bigger screen as I find it makes it that little bit easier to see where you need to be going. It also has the ability to link up to your mobile phone using Bluetooth and you can then use the TomTom to make calls and send and receive texts while you are driving. ...This little toy was possible the biggest revolution to happen to my driving in all the years since I passed my test. I had seen a friend use it and knew I was going to be happy with it. The unit comes supplied with a software package to connect to your pc for updates via the internet, and a usb cable to connect and recharge the unit, and a cigarette lighter so you never run out of power on the move. Once connected to your pc, the unit is fully operational via your computer screen providing you can get a signal indoors, rather than through the tomtom's touch screen until you disconnect it. To be honest, it was that easy to use the first time I turned it on, I couldn't even tell you if it came with a manual or not! The unit is simple, neat and effective.
