Monitor Your Baby
Review of Tomy Walkabout Baby Advance Monitor by
newby2
Advantages: peace of mind
Disadvantages: none
...Baby Walkabout Advance from Tomy
Living in a flat I felt I did not really need the most high tech and expensive of monitors and just needed one that really did the job. I was looking at all the ones available to buy on Amazon and this one sprang out at me.
It was not the cheapest monitor going but it certainly was not the most expensive either. Monitors range from about £15 up to an astonishing £100 plus. The latest ones out on the market offer a television screen where you are actually able to see your baby as well as hear their sounds and monitor room temperature. I feel however the television screen is a little bit much and think I would find myself glued to the screen while all the time away from the baby.
This particular baby monitor set me back only £29. I think this is a fair price for what you are getting...

BT Digital Baby Monitor Plus
Review of BT Digital Baby Monitor Plus by
mikehel
Advantages: Talk back feature, No interference, very clear sound,
Disadvantages: Expensive
...I already had a tomy baby monitor from my first child but it was a few years between children. This meant that technology had moved forward a bit and newer monitors had much better features. The main reason that we went for the bt digital baby monitor plus was because it is a true digital monitor, unlike the tomy monitor which claimed to be digital however only had 2 channels. This meant that if somebody had the same monitor in the area then it would pick up on their noises. You do not get any interference what so ever with the bt digital monitor plus. Make sure that if purchasing a digital monitor, that it is true digital and has more than 2 channels.
The sound quality is excellent, on occations we have heard our baby breathing when on the highest sensitivity, which is adjustable from your handset.
The next great feature...

Tomy keeping a watch on baby
Review of Tomy Walkabout Digital Premier by
Proffles
Advantages: Fulfils all your needs
Disadvantages: AA batteries required in the baby unit
...airwaves are used for all baby monitors so be aware that you may be overheard.
5. My only complaint of the entire system is that the baby unit requires AA batteries, the parent unit has built in rechargeable batteries and as such is great. In reality you do tend to move baby around in the Moses basket and so on, so the baby unit travels with it. Sometimes near a plug socket so the AA batteries are not needed but sometimes you have to use them. The drawback then becomes that the nightlight does not work when you have the baby unit disconnected from the mains. Tomy should rethink this one.
The parent unit in brief has the following functions:
1. Temperature LCD display
2. Light display on/off
3. Moving light/audible transmission
4. Portable unit
5. Volume control
In detail
1. As discussed above the parent unit displays...

Not just a baby monitor
Review of Tomy Walkabout Premier Advance Baby Monitor by
shadsy1982
Advantages: Has a night light, can talk to your baby to provide reassurance, fully portable
Disadvantages: Baby unit does not have a rechargeable battery
...We were bought this monitor by my parents following the birth of our baby and we are now just starting to get the use out of it.
There are two units, one for baby's room and a parent unit and cradle.
On the baby unit there is a night light which is blue in colour and has a very soft light so doesn't disturb baby and you can see without having to turn on the main light. The night light can also be switched on and off via the push of a button on the parent unit.
There is an option that you can set up so that the monitor will only transmit when baby makes a noise in order to save power.
The baby monitor can be plugged into the mains or can be used with 4 x AA batteries which makes it fully portable (although we leave ours plugged in as it is always in the same place). If you do decide to use batteries there is an alarm...

The baby monitor that didn't
Review of Tomy Walkabout Classic by
shropshirelad
Advantages: Peace of mind - when it works
Disadvantages: Far too susceptible to interference
...This is a review of two halves!
We purchased the Tomy Walkabout Classic Advance as this seemed the best value baby monitor with the features we wanted. Also, our perception of the Tomy brand was that their baby products are quality. The monitor cost us £35 when on offer in Mothercare. We bought it before our son arrived, so there was a three month gap between us buying it and needing to use it.
We tested it the day we purchased it, as the instructions state that you may have to adjust the channel / frequency setting initially. However, it worked perfectly out of the box first time.
What you get
------------------
What you get is basically two similar looking monitor units; a baby unit and a parent unit. You plonk the baby unit near the baby, and the parent unit somewhere where you can see or hear it.
The units can...

Tomy Walkabout Digital Baby Monitor...
Review of Tomy Walkabout Digital by
tommyknockers
Advantages: Price, Convenience & Practical
Disadvantages: Bulky & Some Interference
...When we decided to buy a baby monitor for our first child, we asked around and looked around, to try and get the best monitor for our requirements. We simply wanted a monitor that would allow us to go to another part of the house and still be able to hear when the baby woke up/started crying…
Firstly, can I point out, although this monitor has the word digital in the title/name, the signal is not digital… It simply refers to the digital display on the front of the baby monitor, which shows the room temperature, so please, don’t be fooled…
OK, so the monitors themselves are good. Although, depending on interfering signals it does take a little while to adjust the settings to get a good reception, without feedback/static noises… There are 8 different combinations of settings, however, so you should find a suitable one...

A good baby monitor
Review of Tomy Walkabout Classic by
SleepyDormouse
Advantages: reasonably priced
Disadvantages: some interference
...When my son was first born he was always in the same room as us (slept in a carrycot or in our arms), but when he started outgrowing this at around 3 months old and we started putting him in his cot to sleep we felt the need to have a baby monitor. Although his fine set of lungs made it impossible to not hear his crys I wanted to be able to hear the first wimpers even when the tv was on so he wouldn't need to get so upset before I responded. Having looked in the various sorts I decided on one of the cheaper options, the tomy walkabout classic.
Main Features
---------------
As the name suggests you can use the units with batteries (4 AA in each), enabling you to "walkabout". I find this particulary useful when I'm gardening. You can also use it conected to the mains (which I recommend as its cheaper than using batteries). It has...

A Quality Monitor
Review of BT 150 Digital Baby Monitor by
Keelar
Advantages: Many functions, clear sound, no interference, talk back
Disadvantages: Temp sensor maybe a bit sensitive
...We recently borrowed this monitor from a friend - it's on our wish list but we can't really afford to buy one, so we are trialling this one at the moment.
Due to us borrowing it, we were never given an instruction manual, but have still managed to figure out most of the functions with success! And compared to our Tomy Walkabout, this is a fantastic monitor, even if it is a little pricey (£69.99 I think)
The Baby Unit:
This unit has 9 buttons across the top:
-On/Off Switch
-Rec button (which I think is to record your voice but we haven't used this function)
-Page (to page the parent unit I presume if you've lost it somewhere)
-A button with three circles on - I think this is to increase or decrease the brightness of the nightlight
-Nightlight
-Volume up
-Volume down
-Play/Stop (the lullabies)
-Music (to select...

Mother Of All Monitors
Review of Tomy Walkabout Classic by
milliemouse
Advantages: see op
Disadvantages: none at all
...Making the decision what baby monitor to get when my son came along wasn’t an easy one as there are so many monitors to choose from.
In the end I choose the Tomy walkabout classics, mainly as they had so many features on them, for instance they were portable which is handy if you are in the garden and your little one is in bed and they were good value for money at £29.75 ( at argos)
***** The instructions *****
The instructions are easy to follow, they tell you how to set up the baby unit selecting the right channel and the communication range the monitors have.
***** Using the monitors from the main electricity supply *****
To get the best performance from your monitors Tomy recommend both units be used by the mains adaptors that comes with them.
All you need to do is plug the adaptor into the back of the unit, switch...

This monitor doesn't hate me!!!
Review of Fisher Price Sounds 'n' Light baby monitor by
hazeldinka2
Advantages: Cheap & cheerful, Good Sound Quality
Disadvantages: Operates slightly better on batteries than mains power
...This is the fourth baby monitor we have bought - 2 Tomy Walkabout range (both bought used), a new Philips Digital (reviewed elsewhere on Ciao) and now this - and our little boy is only 2 1/2!!
Now, I have had trouble with monitors, if you haven't already gathered, buzzing noises from all previous, and the last one, the Philips, was just dire.
But don't underestimate this Fisher Price monitor - it may be half the price of the Philips (£19.99 from Argos), but it's sound quality is crystal clear, the lights are slightly more gentle on the eyes than the red and green of the previous monitors and it picks up everything I want to hear.
I read the previous reviews, but to be fair, having a toddler is not the same as having a baby.... I have got past the stage of wanting to hear his breathing, and just want to hear if he's upset...
