Tomy Walkabout Classic Advance - Hard to tune
Review of Tomy Walkabout Classic Advance by
gunner_mel
Advantages: Small size, easily carried around
Disadvantages: Difficult chanel tuning
...The Tomy Walkabout Classic Advance is described as the bestselling baby monitor in the UK.
I have had this baby monitor now for about 6 months and I must say it still hassle me although it does work. The monitor has 4 channels which the manufacturer thinks makes it easier to find one that's interference free. I can only disagree. Every time I turn the monitor on I need to search for the right channel. This can sometimes take up to several minutes although it is meant to remember which channel was selected when you next switch on.
The monitor has a 300m range, so it can be easily carried around the house and the garden for flexible, portable monitoring which does work. I have tried it out and even in the garden the reception is good.
Tomy has integrated a 2-way communication which is described as being "handy for when baby...

Tomy Walkabout Classic Advance
Review of Tomy Walkabout Classic by
drucetowers
Advantages: Reliable clear sound
Disadvantages: Not found any except maybe drinks batteries
...This baby monitor has been great for us with our 3 month old son. He is finally sleeping through the night so rather than me going up to bed at 8pm I am now putting the little fella down and having an evening!
This isn’t the first monitor we tried and I can say it is certainly the best. My advice would be to avoid the monitors that plug directly in to the wall (like the air freshener units!) as they need to be away from a radiator and at least three meters apart which is no good if your baby’s room is directly above where you are with the other monitor.
The Tomy Walkabout Classic consists of two units, which can either be plugged into the mains or run using 4AA batteries per unit (beware if you are using the batteries as the main method then you will find they run down quite quickly). The units have a plug and quite...

Walkabout is pure magic
Review of Tomy Walkabout 2001 by
cabletow
Advantages: freedom and security
Disadvantages: others may hear you - be warned
...New parents do you want freedom and security? Is this not having your cake and eating it too?
As I sit here writing this opinion, little Archie lies asleep above me, I can hear his breathing, listen to his snorts and grunts and be happy. We are your usual paranoid parents and we need the reassurance that all is well with him. For seven months we have relied on the Tomy Walkabout 2001 as our peace of mind. The Tomy Walkabout is a radio transmitter-receiver that allows us to have time away from our sleeping child yet if he awakes and get distressed we can hear him. He gets reassured as we come to comfort him and we are reassured that we can hear him.
Why do parents need this? Well we need to know he is all right when we are not with him. We therefore need to hear his breathing and hear when he becomes distressed, but we also need...

Tomy Walkabout Premier Advance
Review of Tomy Walkabout Premier Advance by
she0369
Advantages: Very easy to set up. Tomy Careline (e-mail and telephone very helpful)
Disadvantages: Problems with interference depending on location
...I bought this monitor 10 days ago. Features and functions :-
Baby room temperature displayed on parent unit.
Talk to baby from parent unit.
Rechargeable and portable ( using 4xAA batteries in baby unit)
Baby night light controlled from parent unit.
Volume control.
Moving light display monitors baby with sound turned off.
Communication range approx 300 metres outdoors.
Low battery warning.
Belt clip on parent unit.
Wall mounting baby unit.
It was very easy to set up and get started. The problem I had was the continuous interference despite trying all four channels. Tomy careline were very helpful and offered me an upgrade to the digital model which guarantees no interference for an extra £35 with next day delivery. Apparently location can affect the performance....

Walkabout and Listen
Review of Tomy Walkabout Classic by
tickle_me_black
Advantages: Peace of mind, cheap, easy to use
Disadvantages: The lights on fuction is a bit stupid
.... Again it has a 'low battery' warning meter (same as above) and at the top of the unit is a light indicator, it's diplayed in a semi-circle. The more noise your baby makes the more lights will illuminate from left to right and when the red lights are illuminated, babys sound are very loud. There are two monitoring options on this unit, you can either have just lights and NO sound or both sound and lights. I never have the unit on lights only because I like to hear my baby and this option is no good if you're sleeping. On the left hand side is the volume setting and the belt clip can be swivled downwards and used as a wide base for standing on a bedside cabinet.
The Tomy Walkabout Classic has a communication range of 100 metres, comes complete with 12month guarentee and cost just £29.97 from Toys'R'Us
I'd recommend this to anyone who...

Tomy keeping a watch on baby
Review of Tomy Walkabout Digital Premier by
Proffles
Advantages: Fulfils all your needs
Disadvantages: AA batteries required in the baby unit
...airwaves are used for all baby monitors so be aware that you may be overheard.
5. My only complaint of the entire system is that the baby unit requires AA batteries, the parent unit has built in rechargeable batteries and as such is great. In reality you do tend to move baby around in the Moses basket and so on, so the baby unit travels with it. Sometimes near a plug socket so the AA batteries are not needed but sometimes you have to use them. The drawback then becomes that the nightlight does not work when you have the baby unit disconnected from the mains. Tomy should rethink this one.
The parent unit in brief has the following functions:
1. Temperature LCD display
2. Light display on/off
3. Moving light/audible transmission
4. Portable unit
5. Volume control
In detail
1. As discussed above the parent unit displays...

not as good as you'd think from Tomy
Review of Tomy Walkabout Digital by
deeleybopper
Advantages: simple to set up, well known name
Disadvantages: suffered with interference badly and we took it back
...after finally bringing our very premmie babe back from hosp, obviously we needed a monitor we could rely on and feel safe with. We were very disappointed with this product. As another reviewer has said, the word DIGITAL on the front is deceiving, as you think you're getting something very advanced for a cheap price - don't be fooled. the temperature is the only digital feature, and even that wasn't that useful. We had this last summer in a heatwave and because the temp reading only goes up a certain way, it just constanly read "above 23".
we chose Tomy as a good brand name, and although easy to set up initially the monitor seemed to make hissing, humming and other strange noises constantly. There was also a rhythmic hum every 4 or 5 seconds - just think Japanese water torture and you're there.
After phoning the Tomy...

Mother Of All Monitors
Review of Tomy Walkabout Classic by
milliemouse
Advantages: see op
Disadvantages: none at all
...Making the decision what baby monitor to get when my son came along wasn’t an easy one as there are so many monitors to choose from.
In the end I choose the Tomy walkabout classics, mainly as they had so many features on them, for instance they were portable which is handy if you are in the garden and your little one is in bed and they were good value for money at £29.75 ( at argos)
***** The instructions *****
The instructions are easy to follow, they tell you how to set up the baby unit selecting the right channel and the communication range the monitors have.
***** Using the monitors from the main electricity supply *****
To get the best performance from your monitors Tomy recommend both units be used by the mains adaptors that comes with them.
All you need to do is plug the adaptor into the back of the unit, switch...
