The Legendary musician and cofounder of Joy Division and New Order tells the whole story-the fun, the music, the vast loss of money, the legacy-of Manchester's most iconic nightclub. Peter Hook has been shaping the course of popular music for 30 years. As co-owner of Manchester's Hacienda club, Hook propelled the rise of acid house in the late 1980s, then suffered through its violent fall in the 1990s as gangs, drugs, greed, and a hostile police force destroyed everything he and his friends had created. This is his memory of that era and it is far sadder, funnier, scarier, and stranger than anyone has imagined. As young and naive musicians, the members of New Order were thrilled when their record label Factory opened a club. Yet as their career escalated, they toured the world, and they had top 10 hits, their royalties were being ploughed into the Hacienda and they were only being paid £20 per week. As Peter Hook tells the story of that exciting and hilarious time, all the main characters appear-Tony Wilson, Barney, Shaun Ryder-a rollercoaster of success, money, confusion, and true faith. ... less

In "Savages", Don Winslow introduced Ben and Chon, twentysomething best friends who risk everything to save the girl they both love, O. Among the most celebrated literary thrillers in recent memory, "Savages" was a Top 10 Book of 2010 selection in the "New York Times", "Entertainment Weekly" and in publications around the world. Now, in his high-octane prequel, Winslow reaches back in time to tell the story of how Ben, Chon and O became the people they are. Spanning fifty years, from 1960s Southern California to the recent past, it is a tale of family in all its forms - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, friends and lovers. As the younger generation does battle with a cabal of drug dealers and crooked cops, they come to learn that their future is inextricably linked with their parents' history. A series of breakneck twists and turns puts the two generations on a collision course, culminating in a stunning showdown that will ultimately force Ben, Chon and O to choose between their real families, and their love for each other. ... less

Life at Number 10: Neil Jenkins - An Autobiography - Neil Jenkins

Rugby union star Neil Jenkins could not have publicised his autobiography in a more appropriate and timely way. For within weeks of its publication, the Cardiff and Wales fly-half became the world's top Test points scorer of all time.Jenkins, known as the "Ginger Monster", created the new record during the 1999 Rugby World Cup by passing the tally of 911, which he had shared with Australian legend Michael Lynagh going into the pool game against Samoa. It gives him a special place in the history books--but it also means that this revised and up-to-date edition, particularly the statistics section, will already need changing again!Towards the end of the book, which is written by freelance journalist Paul Rees, Jenkins talks about passing Lynagh's record being one of his major ambitions. That goal has now been realised, but it does not detract from what is a forthright and honest account of a career which Jenkins himself admits has been a series of highs and lows.Overall, though, the scrap dealer's son from a village in rugby-mad south Wales has enjoyed a remarkable time in the game and Life at Number 10--which has nothing to do at all with British Prime Ministers!--is a fitting tribute to him. While Jenkins has become an established player at the highest level at fly-half, the Number 10 jersey and hence the title, he talks in the book about how he found adjusting to full-back as being difficult, as he finds it a "more lonely position".It was at full-back where goal-kicking ace Jenkins helped the British Lions to their heroic series victory in South Africa two years ago. Not surprisingly, a fair proportion of the book is devoted to this great achievement. As well as happily talking about his triumphs, Jenkins does not shirk away from discussing controversy, including the off-field trouble between some players from his former club Pontypridd and Brive after their fiery European Cup encounter in 1997. And he reflects on why he never switched rugby codes, although he does concede that he would have joined league giants Wigan "without a moment's hesitation" if they had officially made an approach. This is the fascinating story of an outstanding career, a career which probably still has a fair way to run. -- Martine Hunter ... less

The Lord of the Rings - J. R. R. Tolkien

A Christian can almost be forgiven for not reading the Bible, but there's no salvation for a fantasy fan who hasn't read the gospel of the genre, JRR. Tolkien's definitive three- book epic, The Lord of the Rings (encompassing The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King), and its charming precursor, The Hobbit. That many (if not most) fantasy works are in some way derivative of Tolkien is understood, but the influence of The Lord of the Rings is so universal that everybody from George Lucas to Led Zeppelin has appropriated it for one purpose or another. Not just revolutionary because it was ground-breaking, The Lord of the Rings is timeless because it's the product of a truly top-shelf mind. Tolkien was a distinguished linguist and Oxford scholar of dead languages, with strong ideas about the importance of myth and story and a deep appreciation of nature. His epic, 10 years in the making, recounts the Great War of the Ring and the closing of Middle-Earth's Third Age, a time when magic begins to fade from the world and men rise to dominance. Tolkien carefully details this transition with tremendous skill and love, creating in The Lord of the Rings a universal and all-embracing tale, a justly celebrated classic. --Paul Hughes ... less

In the vastly overrated 1998 book Easy Riders, Raging Bulls, author Peter Biskind puts the blame for Hollywood's blockbuster mentality at least partially on Steven Spielberg's box-office success with this adaptation of Peter Benchley's bestselling novel, Jaws. But you can't blame Spielberg for making a terrific movie, which Jaws definitely is. The story of a Long Island town whose summer tourist business is suddenly threatened by great-white-shark attacks on humans bypasses the potboiler trappings of Benchley's book and goes straight for the jugular with beautifully crafted, crowd-pleasing sequences of action and suspense supported by a trio of terrific performances by Roy Scheider (as the local sheriff), Richard Dreyfuss (as a shark specialist), and particularly Robert Shaw (as the old fisherman who offers to hunt the shark down). The sequences on Shaw's boat--as the three of them realize that in fact the shark is hunting them--are what entertaining moviemaking is all about. It's odd that the cornerstone of the new edition is a 10-year-old documentary. Shot for the laserdisc release (the unofficial 20th anniversary edition), the 2-hour "The Making of Jaws" is an excellent telling of how this film was made and became the top grossing film (and launched the career of extras filmmaker Laurent Bouzereau). An hour-long edited version appeared on the 25th anniversary DVD. Here's what else different from the 25th anniversary DVD: an interesting a 9-minute vintage featurette shot for British TV that has never been seen in the States; a few additions to the extensive "Jaws Archives" (production stills, storyboards and the like), and a few new fragments in the deleted scene roll. The image is the same excellent transfer as before but this time you can get the DTS and Dolby sound on the same disc plus a nice 60-page photo journal. A seaworthy set but hardly worth trading in your old DVD. --Doug Thomas, Amazon.com ... less

One of the most acclaimed graphic novels of the decade is now available in a specially priced banded set of the 2 volumes. This is the story of Marc, a photographer who's tired, of a very patient chick he meets, of banal horrors and of his pain-in-the-neck cat. It's the story of his art thrown against heavy anxiety attacks; of a really cute woman in his small town who seems to take to him against all odds; of the old neighbor, a peaceful likable fellah until you get to know his disturbing role in the war... Called one of five best graphic novels by " TIME" magazine on its release, it was also a "Booklist" top 10 graphic novel of the year: "Superb marriage of literary realism and comics." "Like any great work of art, it is possible to hold the pages up and through them, see the world" said Comic Book Resources. ... less

About the Author ~ Sadie JonesSadie Jones was born in London. She grew up in a creative environment: her father is the Jamaican poet and screenwriter Evan Jones, and her mother was an actress. As her friends took up their various university places, Sadie worked in a variety of jobs. After travelling, she settled in London and spent several years as a screenwriter, before writing her first novel, The Outcast. Sadie is married and has two children.Exclusive Amazon.co.uk Interview with Sadie JonesWhat is The Outcast about? The Outcast is about a boy called Lewis - his childhood and adolescence as he grows up in the stultifying world of the home counties in the late forties and fifties. It is an everyday tale of drunkenness, violence and a fair amount of sex, set amongst the well-brought-up professional classes. It is also a love story. What inspired you to write it?The idea of a boy coming out of prison and trying to fit into a community that is itself corrupt was the first thing that came to me. I wanted to write an Oedipal story, with iconic characters, about what the nature of what it is to belong, and injustice. I set it in the fifties because I have always been very attracted to the books and films of that time.Who are your literary influences? Its difficult to think in terms of being influenced, because when you write you try to find your own voice and forget those of other writers, but I must in some way be a product of books Ive loved. My favourite writers are Hemingway, Capote, Salinger, McEwan and Dostoyevsky. If you could recommend just one "must-read book" to anyone, what would it be and why?It would be The Brothers Karamazov, by Dostoyevsky, because it is a book that tells a riveting story and is profoundly insightful about human nature. Dostoyevsky has an undeserved reputation of being sort of turgid, but nothing could be further from the truth of this book. He relishes the events he discloses and has no prissiness he gets in the mud with his characters. What top tips do you have for anyone looking to write their first book? Its very hard; I only know what works for me, which is planning, structure and hard work. I have found that whenever I write thinking Ill sort some lingering doubt out later, I generally run into trouble. If you cant answer every single question about your story, then people will be able to tell. Also, try not to get too tied up in whether or not its any good, or what will happen to it when its finished all of that can be paralysing. Reviews for The OutcastAn assured voice, a riveting story, and an odd, wrenchingly sympathetic protagonist. I would never have imagined this was a first novel.Lionel ShriverIn the tradition of ATONEMENT and REMAINS OF THE DAY but in her own singularly arresting voice, Sadie Jones conjures up the straight-laced, church-going, secretly abusive middle class of 1950s England. The Outcast is a passionate and deeply suspenseful novel about what happens to those who break the rules, and what happens to those who keep them. I loved reading this wonderful debut. Margot LiveseyI much admired The Outcast. Sadie Jones tells her story using minute details to convey the apparent ordinariness of her characters' lives. But from the choreography of these walking, smiling, drinking people, from their emotional repression and their children's deprivation, she conjures an atmosphere of menace and suspense that erupts into violence and tragedy. It is an impressive debut for this talented new novelist. Michael HolroydSadie Jones is an important new voice. She writes in beautiful prose of terrible events, demonstrating how love denied brings brutal consequences. She conjures the repressive social climate of the 1950s with awful accuracy, and explores the hearts and minds of young people with forensic skill. A great stylist and fine storyteller.Joan BakewellOne of Radio 4s Book at Bedtime reads for February, Jones story is imbued with brooding atmosphere and drama. Understated and elegantly narrated with attention to period detail, this is a gripping love story with a twist. If you liked Atonement by Ian McEwan, youll love this. Harpers Bazaar (Feb issue)A wonderfully assured first novel. GuardianThe prose is elegant and spare, but the story it reveals is raw and explosive Devastatingly good. Daily MailThe Outcast grips from page one Jones has captured the stultifying morals and mores of Fifties English middle-class life with satisfying accuracy. Publishing NewsSet in post WWII suburban London, this superb debut novel charts the downward spiral and tortured redemption of a young man shattered by loss. The war is over, and Lewis Aldridge is getting used to having his father, Gilbert, back in the house. Things hum along splendidly until Lewiss mother drowns, casting the 10-year-old into deep isolationJoness prose is fluid, and Lewiss suffering comes across as achingly real. Publishers WeeklyA confident, suspenseful and affecting first novel, delivered in cool, precise, distinctive prose. Kirkus ... less

This is the biography of financial genius and ubermayor Michael Bloomberg, written by an award-winning veteran New York journalist, published at the time of the controversial mayoral election, in which Bloomberg is running for a third term. Bloomberg's story would be riveting had it stopped in 2001. By then he had made a fortune as a general partner at Saloman Brothers before being fired in 1981 with a $ 10 million payoff, with which he founded what became Bloomberg LLC. His first client for providing financial information via bespoke terminals was Merrill Lynch. By 2008, Bloomberg was one of the 10 richest Americans, and Bloomberg LLC the pre-eminent provider of financial information in the country. He is a very significant philanthropist, among others to his alma mater John Hopkins University. In 2001, Bloomberg ran for mayor of New York, abandoning his lifelong membership in the Democratic Party for a Republican slot, where he was endorsed by Rudy Giuliani. He took on the responsibility for rebuilding the confidence of the city, still badly shaken after 9/11 which preceded his election by barely seven weeks. At the end of two terms he was one of the most popular mayors in the city's history. He could have gone out at the top setting an unenviably high standard for his successor. But in another huge gamble Bloomberg decided that he could only be succeeded by himself, even if he had to rewrite electoral law to do so. He had bet his legacy for the privilege of supervising the city during the most severe financial crisis since the great depression of the 1930s. It was an epic twist in an already dramatic career, proving if nothing else that Bloomberg was never going to go quietly. He has not authorized this book, but he has allowed close family, friends and business intimates to be interviewed on the record by Purnick, and he has given her hours of his own time as well. It all makes for an unequaled biography of a man full of contradictions, an inveterate risk taker, ...

Called one of five best graphic novels by " TIME" magazine on its release, it was also a "Booklist" top 10 graphic novel of the year: "Superb marriage of literary realism and comics." "Like any great work of art, it is possible to hold the pages up and through them, see the world" said Comic Book Resources. ... less

Young Frankenstein [Blu-ray] [1974] [DVD]

If you were to argue Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein ranks among the top- 10 funniest movies of all time, nobody could reasonably dispute the claim. Spoofing classic horror in the way that Brooks' previous film Blazing Saddles sent up classic Westerns, the movie is both a loving tribute and a raucous, irreverent parody of Universal's classic horror films Frankenstein (1931) and Bride of Frankenstein (1935). Filming in glorious black and white, Brooks recreated the Frankenstein laboratory using the equipment from the original Frankenstein (courtesy of designer Kenneth Strickfaden), and this loving attention to physical and stylistic detail creates a solid foundation for non-stop comedy. The story, of course, involves Frederick Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) and his effort to resume experiments in re-animation pioneered by his late father. (He's got some help, since dad left behind a book titled How I Did It.) Assisting him is the hapless hunchback Igor (Marty Feldman) and the buxom but none-too-bright maiden Inga (Teri Garr), and when Frankenstein succeeds in creating his monster (Peter Boyle), the stage is set for an outrageous revision of the Frankenstein legend. With comedy highlights too numerous to mention, Brooks guides his brilliant cast (also including Cloris Leachman, Madeline Kahn, Kenneth Mars and Gene Hackman in a classic cameo role) through scene after scene of inspired hilarity. Indeed, Young Frankenstein is a charmed film, nothing less than a comedy classic, representing the finest work from everyone involved. Not one joke has lost its payoff, and none of the countless gags have lost their zany appeal. From a career that includes some of the best comedies ever made, this is the film for which Mel Brooks will be most fondly remembered. No video library should be without a copy of Young Frankenstein. And just remember--it's pronounced "Fronkensteen". --Jeff Shannon ...

Kirkus ... less

Top ten books for nerds, geeks and the unpopular!
Advantages: These books are classics in my eyes!
Disadvantages: My weird obsession with the apocalypse?
...: The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams.
No top ten of books should neglect to mention the late great Douglas Adams. The funniest, most ludicrous yet fundamentally British book of all time Adams mercilessly takes apart humanity and our superiority complex when earth is demolished to make way for a hyperspace bypass and the only thing it is known for is being "Mostly Harmless". With a fabulously...
