...Torquay also known as 'The English Riviera' got its name from the ancient Saxon hamlet of Torre and the Quay it sits on. Well known for its mild climate, there are many palm trees growing all around the area. Torquay was made popular in Victorian times, I'm sure many people reading this review will have visited Torquay on holiday as a child. Torquay is made up of many regions, which have been added to over the years. The Willows, Watcombe, Saint Marychurch, Babbacombe, Wellswood, The Warberries, Ellacombe, Plainmoor, Tormohun (although this is known locally as just Torquay town centre), Torre, Livermead, Shiphay, Barton, Cockington, Chelston, Upton and Hele village. There are many beaches in Torquay, obviously some busier than others. While some are easy to get to, others are hidden away or quite steep to get to. 2 examples...

...The Best Western Gleneagles describes itself as been located in a chic area of Torquay which is about 12 min taxi ride from the station, It boasts 41 modern rooms many of which have ocean views and all of which have private balconies, all rooms are tastefully designed with en suite bathroom, TV, hairdryer and hot drinks refreshment tray. Prices can vary depending on the time of year you visit this hotel and if any special offers are present. I myself was attending a trade show in Torquay and required a smoking room of which I was informed this hotel has 11 such rooms for those wishing to smoke, the rest of the hotel is of course non smoking to comply with regulations. Torquay - a great place to be, by the sea

Advantages: Loads to do, caters for all ages
Disadvantages: In bad weather you can't appreciate the views

...Having been at Uni for two years now, I finally appreciate the beauty of Torquay having been away from it. When the weather is good it really is like the South of France (Ive been there - so i do what its like!). I feel very lucky to have my home base here in this untouched part of England. Its a fantastic place to live but I can't recommend it highly enough as a place to visit. All my friends who have come to visit ,as well as my parents friends etc, fall inlove with the place. My boyfriend is from London and he loves my area so much he wants us to move down here once I've finished Uni. For a holiday, it is best to come in the summer months (to enjoy the weather) or potentially in the easter holidays (a little quieter and the sun makes a good appearance!). Meadfoot Bay Hotel,Torquay.

Advantages: Great hospitality, comfy clean rooms, cracking breakfast!

...Both my Husband and I were looking to get away last minute (8th & 9th August '06) and decided to set our hearts upon Torquay. We have visited Torquay before but haven't had the pleasure of staying so off I went on Google to search for hotels/guesthouses in Torquay. I stumbled across the Meadfoot Bay Hotel and I thought it was great that they had their own website www.meadfoot.com. I browsed the pages and was happy with what i saw, so decided to pick up the phone to see if they had any availability. Lucky for us, they had 1 room left which was a double and incidentally was room No.1. The hotel itself is set 200m from Meadfoot bay (a superb, quiet spot with excellent walks and a lovely beach). Torquay, this is the English Riviera

Advantages: Plenty to do
Disadvantages: Very hilly

...I spent 10 days in Torquay with my wife and daughter in September. We stayed in a apartment about 10-15 minutes from the town centre called the "Clydesdale". The apartment itself was very good, everything you could possibly need was there. We were less than 5 minutes walk to the beach (downhill) and then a futher 10 minutes walk along the seafront to town. The beaches in Torquay are not the best, too much seaweed but very clean, deck chairs and loungers can be hired at a reasonable price, I think 80p for 3-4 hours.We found the beaches at Paington much nicer. There are lots of places to go, boat trips to Brixam, where there is a replica of the Golden Hind, a boat trip can be taken around the coast about 2-3 hours, and lots of coach trips. Places of interest to visit include cockington village, Paignton zoo, Dartmouth and plenty...

Disappointing but has potential

...There was a time when all Best Westerns were of a certain standard then you knew what to expect, but this one is unfortunately not one of the better Best Westerns I've stayed in and I'm sure there are many more hotels in Torquay better than this one. I stayed here for 2 nights and having never been to Torquay before, had a bit of trouble finding it from the map on their website. Anyway, after eventually finding it, there were no spaces in the car park although there was the usual BMW parked right outside and blocking the door - as you come to expect at every hotel. I parked in the road outside - journey over. THE STAFF: I found them to be friendly but didn't really have that much contact with them. I asked the receptionist/manager for directions in to town and although he didn't give me a map or print something from the internet...

...Ok, ok cheap shot, but I just had a close encounter with one yesterday, and I am still feeling slightly irritated to say the least. Of course the title also refers to the club nickname of my next subject: Torquay United You may or may not know, but I am a passionate Exeter City fan. I try and work this into as many of my opinions and comments, but I am really serious. I love the club, having been born and breed in the city, and following every home game and plenty of away games for nearly half my life they do mean a lot to me. What better to talk about, than our closest neighbors, less than 40 miles away, so here I go, I will try and make it less biased and a chance to sing about Exeter, but I doubt it. A shabby hotel in need of updating

Advantages: Easy to find, plenty of parking
Disadvantages: A steep walk back from the town, much of the decor and facilities in desperate need of an upgrade

...This hotel is well located and easy to find, but it is a steep hill's wall away from the town of Torquay and the harbour. However there is a bus which comes up the hill fairly frequently and stops by the hotel. When we arrived at the hotel we were kept waiting for several minutes whilst the hotelier was on the telephone talking to another potential guest. He didnt acknowledge us at all and never apologised for keeping us waiting. He showed me to my room which was of a very poor standard. The floor of the en-suite bathroom was covered in some grubby stuff which looked like stuck down flooring had been taken up and the adhesive not properly removed. The room was barely big enough for a large single, but two single beds were squashed in with very little space between them. The bed spreads were past thier best and one of them had...
