Slim Toshiba DVD player performs well
Review of Toshiba SD340E by
bowdeni
Advantages: Multi Region, Good picture, slim, durable
Disadvantages: No Scart, not a recorder
...the DVD player connected to my hifi, so the sound is just amazing, sometimes better than the cinema. One of the connection options is audio out.
In terms of general features, the Toshiba SD340E has them all. Ciao claims that the player features no DIVX, however I can claim that to be incorrect, since the version I have does. A very useful feature of the Toshiba SD340E is that it can be modified to give multi-region playback. In case you are not aware, the players are locked to region two (UK) and selected models can be modified so that region one etc (USA) DVDs can be played on them. I'd recommend when purchasing the Toshiba SD340E, that you enquire as to whether it has been modified to play DVDs from all regions. Mine is as i said, and the advantages are that I can buy cheaper DVDs from UK online shops, months before they get a UK release...

DVD Player that can play DivX .avi files and more!
Review of DK Digital DVD-500 DivX DVD player by
Deru
Advantages: Plays DivX AVI and MPEG files, Supports lots of formats, Looks good, Karaoke,
Disadvantages: DivX 3.11, 4.02 plays slightly slanted, cheap plasticy remote, Doesn't play some NTSC encoded files
...I've wanted a DVD player that was capable of playing DivX files for a while because of all my anime and por...errr....other video files..., but the players cost more than normal DVD players so resisted for a while. I've seen brands such as KISS and Yamada but later came across this DK Digital DVD-500 DivX DVD player after the prices have dropped. It only cost £41.98 (61.52 Euros) from SVP Communications (AKA Blank Disc Shop).
-= The Player =-
The player looks sleek with a black and silver design. Black at the front with silver at the top and bottom curving in towards each other at the middle, which I think looks really good. The player itself looks quite durable and the tray isn't flimsy like some I've seen. The LCD display shows the numbers in green and other details such as TRK, DVD, etc in red. I think it's very easy to read...

Packard Bell DVD-DIVX 350
Review of Packard Bell DVD-DIVX 350 by
jameswildi
Advantages: Great visual and audio quality
Disadvantages: None
...The packard Bell DVD-DIVX 350 bring create visual and audio qualities. The DVD Player - with MP3 Playback - without Real Dolby - without Show View - with Photo CD Playback - with DivX Playback. I know you may think why do I need all of this when all I want to do is play DVD when I can pick up a cheaper one from Tesco for under £10. Well these DVD players dont offer the same quality as the more expensive DVD players. This is if you want the high quality surround sound. The cheaper dvd player may not have as long as a life the the more expensive well known brands and you could experience juttering and freezing throughout the dvd. So this is why I reccomend the Packard Bell DVD player. It is very easy to use and have many functions. Even if you dont want them, I still reccomend this for the high quality of movie you get without having...

Toshiba DVD.
Review of Toshiba Toshiba SD270E by
apatra
Advantages: all the functional features available
Disadvantages: lacks on board memory.
...I will put this that I am a DVD addict because I have up to two DVD players excluding this present Toshiba model well I have no other option than to sell one off to a friend or action at E bay merchants. Well I will say that this is a standard DVD player because it has all the necessary features like MPEG4, DIVX, MPEG and AVI functionality.
From my observation, this DVD player has the capability of playing all uk format and even plays format from abroad. It has wide range of features but as a device that I got new, and as usual with DVD machines, I pray it last long for me because DVD machines are capable of selecting and rejecting disc. It also has the capabilities of 5X zoom picture, which is capable of making the picture 5 times larger than the normal size. Some DVD machines are capable of not playing a home recorded that I once...

Hi DVD, Bye VHS, RIP Betamax
Review of Member Advice on DVD Players by
oblivious0r
Advantages: High Quality Picture, Audio, Special Features
Disadvantages: New Technology On The Way
...and Toshiba in a unified standard joint operation. The purpose of the DVD was to become a movie playback format. A few years later the first DVD's and DVD players started appearing on the market and movie production companies included special features on the DVD's as a unique selling point to encourage more people to switch to DVD. Now in 2004 DVDs are easily more popular than Vhs tapes now because they deliver superior digital picture quality and sound by featuring AC3 audio multi channel sound for sound channels of 2 or 5.1. The success of the DVD has spawned dvd recorders and dvd rewriters which are becoming more and more popular as time goes on.
DVD stands for digital versatile disk with the most common DVD discs holding 4.7GB of data. Newer discs are capable of dual layers whereby there are 2 layers of data on one side of the disc. DVD...

Packard Bell Standalone DivX Player
Review of Packard Bell DVD-DIVX 350 by
kenjin
Advantages: Multi Functional
Disadvantages: Remote control is problematic
...What is a standalone DivX Player? Well let me start by explaining what DivX is. DivX could be described as the MP3 of video format. The DivX technology compresses video to a fraction of its original size for efficient storage on your hard drive and DVD and easy sharing online.
There is also a non proprietary version out called Xvid, which is open source. Originally based on OpenDivX, XviD was started by a group of volunteer programmers after the OpenDivX source was closed.
With the video format so compressed in this way, you can easily fit 5 X 1.5hr feature movies onto only one 4.7GB DVD disc. Also the quality is almost as good as a DVD.
Until recently the problem with DivX and Xvid format was that the movies could only be played on your computer because there was no standalone DVD player with the DivX or Xvid codec installed...

A DVD recorder that will go on and on
Review of Toshiba RD-XS25-S-TE by
ironie
Advantages: simple to use, gives good results every time
Disadvantages: electronics are so quickly updated with more functional models
...The Toshiba RD-XS25-S-TE is an attractive, stylish DVD Recorder with 160GB hard disc drive. The casing is silver and the fascia is silver with a wide black strip which houses the operating buttons. Its dimensions are W 42 cm x D27.4 cm x H 5.8 cm and it weighs 4.3 kg
The RD-XS25-S-TE has a progressive scan. This works in the same manner as your computer monitor. It writes one full frame of video from left to right across the screen every 1/60 of a second. Since the entire image is drawn at one time--as opposed to an interlaced image where the even lines are drawn first, followed by the odd lines--a progressively scanned video image looks more stable than an interlaced one. Progressive scan also introduces fewer motion artifacts, such as jagged diagonal lines and movement in fine detail, into the picture. Progressive-scan DVD players...

Terrific Toshiba
Review of Toshiba SD P1707 by
lionmatty
Advantages: Easy to use, lightweight and stylish
Disadvantages: Better speaker volume
...I got this portable DVD player after my mate suggested it. I like to travel so having some entertainment makes travelling more exciting. My mate had hers for Christmas and said that it was the best thing she got. I like to browse through the stuff on Ebay and often like to pick up a bargain. This portable DVD player was a great buy at only £50.
I chose the Toshiba DVD player as I have heard some great things about the company. I thought that a product supplied by a reputable company would be sure to provide hours of entertainment and it certainly has.
It looks good and is not too heavy which is obviously very good when you are carrying it around. The screen is 7 inches wide which makes for good viewing; I could easily see the screen. I did like the silver appearance as it made it look quite stylish and modern.
It was easy...

Value Divx/DVD player
Review of Mico DVD808 by
wopdiddly
Advantages: Divx Player, cheap, stylish
Disadvantages: No firmware upgrades
...I recently purchased the Mico 808D DVD player from Sainsburys for the bargain price of £39.99. Granted when it comes to cheap DVD players there are cheaper out there. However they usually don't play Divx movies.
For those not in the know, a Divx film is one that can easily be downloaded using a Peer to Peer file sharing tool such as Kazaa. You can download and watch films before they even reach the cinema and they are mostly DVD quality. However you do not need a DVD writer as the file size of a Divx movie is just the right size to fit on a CD. This is why you need a DivX DVD player to play them as they are essentially Avi/MPG files on CD.
The Mico 808D is a silver, slimline and has a mirror finished front and really looks the part. When you open the CD drawer you can instantly tell that it is not a top of the range DVD player...
