...The Notebook is SMALL and LIGHT that's it main features. 25.7cm x 21.8cm and only 1.4kg. The processor runs at 300Mhz and the device will probably come with a 6GB HD. The Laptop runs hot and the fan never really stops. The standard package comes with 64MB of memory and can be upgraded to 192MB. I have a 128MB upgrade chip installed, bringing it up to 192MB. Treat yourself and upgrade your memory. The original OS was WIN98. I upgrade my Protégé 3110CT to run Window XP pro. If you do upgrade then make sure you have the latest drivers for the external CD-ROM and remove the extra memory before the upgrade. As I remember, at some point it failed because it couldn't address the extra memory. With XP loaded reinstall the extra memory and the system will discover it. ...As someone else has already pointed out, most laptops are bought as corporate machines, but since I spend most of my life tied to one - I think the Portege is worthy of an opinion. I travel very long distances, sometimes by train, sometimes by plane. Often away from the office environment all bar a dodgy modem line. I'm quite lucky to be able to choose my work laptop. Dells are prefered by the company. I chosen the Toshiba above the others because it fits in with my lifestyle... And here's why... Design, Weight and Size - When I travel by plane, I need to use my laptop, however restrictions on luggage size often mean that space is a real premium in my bag. Advantages: Very small, and light

...A PII-300 smaller than an A4 sheet of paper, just over 2cm thick, and weighing as much as a bag of sugar! If it was ugly as sin you'd forgive it - but it looks darn fine too! The 300 Mhz processor is plenty powerful enough to crunch everday tasks - and it's just as capable running Word, Dreamweaver or web surfing. The 6GB hard disk, and 64Mb memory complement appropriately. The 10.4" TFT screen is plenty big enough for most work at 800x600, and clear and bright. The keyboard doesn't hinder my reasonable typing speed either. The 'nipple' mouse pointer is plenty responsive, and despite not having used such a pointer before I was soon comfortable. Battery life is well above average, giving 2 to 3 hours depending on levels of disk access / modem use. Toshiba's proprietory power saving software squeezes battery life to your own... Read review

...I purchase a lot of laptops for the company I work for and we tend to stick with Toshiba. Why? Because they offer excellent build quality and reliability not to mention the speed of repairs etc. A director wanted a light laptop as he travels a lot. I recommended the Portege 4010 and tool delivery of it this morning. It is a very sleek silver design. The keyboard area is black. The unit I brought is the following specification. Pentium III 933 Mobile processor, 256Mb RAM, 30Gb Hard disk, 12.1" TFT screen, internal 10/100 network and 56K modem, WiFi, 2 x USB and internal DVD drive. I brought it from Action.com for £1644.99. The floppy drive is a further £53.99. The laptop is extremely light weighing in at 1.7Kg. The power adapter is also light weight. To reduce the weight even further, you can remove the DVD drive... Advantages: Robust, powerful, functionally superior to the competition. All you could ask for from a tablet pc.
Disadvantages: Can get hot, but nothing to worry about, battery life shorter than with other models (3.5hrs), heavier than the competition making it awkward for the true mobile user.

My evaluation has covered the HP Compaq TC1100, the Motion M1200, the Fujitsu Stylistic ST4120, and the Toshiba Portégé 3500. ...I bought a Toshiba Portege 3110 about six months ago due to it winning the PC Magazine sub-Notebook award. One of the main reasons I bought was its size and weight - this is a tiny machine and weighs in at a little over 1Kg. It is ideal if you want a machine to use whilst commuting, since you won't need to visit the chiropractor after carrying it around for a week, unlike most laptops. However, if you want a desktop replacement, look elsewhere. As well as it weighing very little, it has a decent sized TFT screen; is powerful enough for me to develop web applications on; and has an exceptional battery life for a small machine (3 hours). ...I have had several laptops, usually older ones and was given this one by my brother six months back. He'd used it continuously for about a year and it was showing its flaws but after a bit of tweaking it's been a dream, and believe me I'm no light user either! Mostly I use it to develop software (Visual Studio 2005, C#, .NET) and have it weighted down with SDK's. But, I also edit video in premiere on it, and write music in Cubase with some hefty plug-ins running not to mention a Line 6 TonePort GX and amp modelling software STRENGTHS The Toshiba Portege A200 is one of the lightest, slimmest laptops you'll come across, but apart from a slightly poor graphics card it lacks nothing in features and is highly upgradeable. ...INFO I have been involved with Toshiba laptops for a few years now. First in having one as a work laptop and secondly supporting them for other users. Toshiba have the ability to create a laptop that is rugged enough to withstand daily use whilst being designed well enough to fit the daily use it was intended for. The Portege R200 is no exception and is an exceptional laptop for the business traveller. Once given the go ahead to buy a couple of these I couldn't wait to ditch the Dell equivalents. COST I managed to secure 2 R200 laptops for a mere £1234 each excluding VAT from Inmac. I have however seen one on EBAY last week for £994. Now that's cheap. FIRST THOUGHTS When the first R200 arrived I couldn't believe the size of the box. It's so small you would think it had a couple of paperback novels in it and not a PC... Read review
