I brought the Toshiba Satellite Laptop (model number L750D) in May 2012. I brought the laptop through littlewoods catalogue for £499.
I mainly use this laptop for social use (to check facebook, read emails, to make skype calls etc).
Look and feel, ease of use and range of extra features
The main reason I brought this laptop was because of the lovely bright red colour...

Speed
The Toshiba Satellite Pro L500 is one of the fastest laptops I've used. It's much faster than my own Ei Systems laptop and my sister's E-Machines system (purchased in 2007 and 2008 respectively). I would expect nothing less as this was sold as a top of the range laptop just this year and it cost £650. I purchased a computer this year and, just to show speed depends on the price tag...

The Satellite C660-21Q is a reasonable laptop from Toshiba
Advantages: Good performance and plenty of disk space
Disadvantages: Intense games are a struggle
...more than capable of performing the tasks we need. Additionally it has taken over day to day operations from our pc ? not because it is more capable but because of its significant reduction in power consumption from around 250-600W to around 90W.
For day to day tasks the Toshiba Satellite C660 I can certainly recommend it although for £399 + shipping charges on Amazon it is a little overpriced....
