Toulouse - Space City

Advantages: Informative, fun exciting for all ages
Disadvantages: trnaslator batteries, food prices, not enough time to see and do everything!

...A few years ago my mother-in-law bought a plot of land in the south of France with the intention of building a house to live in. That was the summer of 1998. That Christmas, my husband and I went to visit and we crammed as many wonderful places into our week holiday as possible. One place in particular was fascinating. This place was le city de l’espace, Toulouse. (Space City for anyone not up on the French lingo!) It was a relatively new attraction when we visited – less than a year since first opening. It was a huge place with outdoor and indoor attractions. Review of Toulouse (France)

Romance in Toulouse -the perfect venue

Advantages: location location location
Disadvantages: not cheap for drinks etc from the bar.

...The crown Plaza hotel in the centre of the old town of Toulouse is a great place for a romantic weekend break. BMI fly in to Toulouse from Manchester so two hours after boarding the plane we had just a twenty minute (20 Euro) taxi drive from Toulouse Blagnac airport to get to the hotel. I booked using the www.ichotelsgroup.com website which is a very easy way of finding the best hotel anywhere in the world within the group (Holiday Inn, Intercontinental and Crowne Plaza). So I had read that the location for this hotel was on Place Capitole in the centre of the old town of Toulouse. What a result. We didn't hire a car because we just wanted to stay in the city centre and do the café / museum / cathedral / restaurant chill out weekend and from this hotel just a short walk to all the above was possible. LA VILLA ROSE

Advantages: A place to share with friends.

...La Ville Rose means the pink city, which seems rather a strange name for people to give to a vast city in the South of France, although there is good reason. When you look over the bridges towards the centre of Toulouse, all of the buildings that form the historic centre of this great city appear to be pink. This is one of France's huge cities with over 600,000 inhabitants, and when I visited last year, I was amazed at the activity, because I live in a small community of 400 people, and to me, this was enormous. I stayed near the centre of Toulouse with a friend, and in this particular area, the parks are amazing. There are roads leading off in all directions, but the people in the parks do not have to be concerned with the hustle bustle of city life, because parks are joined to one another with bridges that cross these major roads...

Myriad at the Kyriad

Advantages: Clean, basic accomodation
Disadvantages: In the middle of traffic hell

...It was my girlfriend's 21st birthday and I had a week of holiday to use up before Christmas. So, as you do, I booked a trip to Toulouse for the two of us. The Kyriad is probably not the hotel I would have chosen if I'd had an unlimited budget and more time to reflect on the trip. A huge 2 star hotel at the wrong end of Toulouse's Boulevard de la Gare, everything about its decoration, situation and lack of facilities suggests that it's not a hotel for a romantic break, more one for the low end business traveller. It's next to a canal, but at the exact point where the still waters are covered by a large concrete bridge. Crowds of typically French pedestrians throng past for much of the day, and unfortunately most of them seem to be typically French prostitutes. Review of Kyriad Toulouse Centre, Toulouse

Shabby chic - c'est fantastique!

Advantages: friendly, fantastic food, great atmosphere
Disadvantages: up a flight of stairs

...C'est fantastique!!! Imagine, a warm July evening. It's late and you find yourself outside a restaurant, looking at yet another menu. Some other 'foreigners', just leaving, recommend the place wholeheartedly, so you mount the stairs to the 'salon' on the first floor. A warm welcome greets you and you are shown to a table, your only slight regret being that you weren't early enough to enjoy a table on the balcony. The decor is definitely 'fin de ciecle' and Colette and Toulouse Lautrec would have fitted in perfectly. The wallpaper of blowsy roses and gorgeous classical statuary is perfect. If you are into 'shabby chic', it's worth coming here just for some authentic inspiration! The food was wonderful and I can honestly say that 'Eau de Folles' produces the most tender, succulent mussels to be found anywhere - no mean feat...

Grand day out

Advantages: One of very few space museums in Europe, great exhibits
Disadvantages: Difficult to get to

...Cite d'espace is on the outskirts of Toulouse. If you visit by car, the attraction itself provides plenty of parking facilities and the locality is a pleasant enough drive. Driving through Toulouse is nightmarish though so I recommend you carefully plan your route. Once you get there, it's a wonderful museum for all the family. Admittedly it's rather techy and male-orientated, but there were plenty of families and school parties there when I visited. I also happened to choose one of their free Fridays, so I got in for free! The counter staff and guides all speak English as well as French. I was shown around the Russian exhibits by a very knowledgeable English-speaking guide, went in MIR, sat in Soyuz. Certainly a rare experience for anyone. The "trip to Mars" exhibit with robots and futuristic computers etc was also very...

Advantages: Easy to get to, cheap flights from Stansted and Dublin
Disadvantages: Very limited facilities
