The trackball is simply a mouse upside down really, with a ball your thumb or fingers move around, with the buttons in various places. Microsoft got cute with the trackball, and decided to give it a nice glossy surface, and make it quite ergonomic. The index finger controls the ball, while the middle finger or the ring finger controls the wheel on the right. The wheel on the IntelliMouse TrackBall performs just like it does on the other mice. In addition to the wheel, the two buttons for clicking are now on the left side of the trackball, in which your thumb is to control. Advantages: No more frantically shifting your hand across the desk
Disadvantages: A pet hate - the red light that comes on when you move the trackball!

...An optical trackball mouse, you say? Well, mice of the computer kind have now been given a new lease of life thanks to the trackball, and I reccomend you give this one a go. To operate this mouse, you simply place your hand on the stylish, gray part where your hand and fingers go, stick your thumb on the red trackball (note the red light which is charming at first, but a little annoying in time) move it around and away you go! At first, it's only natural to feel that you can't use the mouse at all because it is such a change from your usual mouse. "I don't like this..." I thought, and you will too. I couldn't immediately get used to the feeling of never needing to move the mouse and my hand frantically around the desk again. But, stick with it! ...This is probably my favorite purchase for my computer 'stuff' collection! I started using a cordED version of this thing 10 years ago or so at work, got one for myself, and after it died (was in use for 5 years, which is fair in my mind) I got the cordless version listed here. I love this thing, and here are some details on why: Ergonomics - I think this thing is really good to reduce strain on your wrist, and after a week or two getting used to the way it works with your thumb being the finger to move the trackball, it's so easy to work with. Detail on screen - at least for me, it's really easy to get exactly what I want to click on, easier than with a mouse! I know one reviewer doesn't like this for gaming... I love it for gaming! I do 1st person shooters a lot (i.e. HalfLife, etc.) and it works like a dream. Software... Read review

...the screen with the trackball which is operated by your right thumb, the whole unit is shaped a bit like a trilobite - which makes it especially endearing to me - your hand "moulds" to the shape and rests comfortably with all the buttons to hand. We chose the one with a wire - after all, what's the point in being able to operate the mouse from across the room when you can't reach the computer? With a wireless keyboard we could have done both, but then not been able to see the screen, Hmm - it was much cheaper than the wireless one. Good value at less than £20, and very reliable, without the usual clogging issues associated with the conventional mouses? Mice? Meese? Good on a confined workstation with a lot of programmable extra features - if you move it around in your laptop bag watch out for the ball dropping out.... Read review

...trackball the ball is placed on top of the mouse, and all you have to do is place you finger on the ball and with ease it goes to where you want it too. It may take time for you to get used to it, but it’s so much easier and faster. So, instead of moving your normal mouse up and down your desk, which can take quite a lot of space simply roll the grey ball. It’s very easy to use but does take some time. It’s easy to install in to your computer, if you just follow the instruction from the CD ROM wizard which makes installing it easier. My little cousin uses this mouse and she finds it very easy to use, so it’s great alternative to your conventional mouse which used to require a lot of mobility. Until you use this mouse, you won’t realise how much arm muscles you use on your old mouse.... Read review

Advantages: Bi - handed allowed, sleek (and modern), saves space, V.easy to use and it goes on.
Disadvantages: Dust may cause problems - but its not as bad as the dust affects on a typical mouse.
