Inca trail - iconic world-class Peruvian hiking trail
Advantages: Stunning views, sense of achievement
Disadvantages: Unbelievably exhausting! Very expensive.
...During the peak of the Inca Empire, many steep paved routes were built as a system of highways throughout the empire for the chasqui runners of its ruler (the eponymous Inca) to travel on. If people mention "the" Inca trail, they are referring to the most famous one of all - the paved path leading to the famous Machu Picchu, an Incan city perched on a mountain top high in the Peruvian Andes.
Since I was a child and heard of Machu Picchu, I wanted to hike along its famous and difficult trail. The city has a mysterious appeal to it - having remained hidden from the Spanish conquistadores, it was unknown to Europeans (though not to locals!) until 1911 when Hiram Bingham "discovered" it. Even today, the city (and its neighbouring modern town Aguas Calientes) are extremely isolated - you arrive there by train or on foot, not by road...

A desperate woman on a desperate trail
Advantages: Excellent storyline, one for everyone
Disadvantages: none, it's great
...The Desperate Trail is an 129 minute, graphic western starring Sam Elliott {Road House, Tombstone}, Craig Sheffer {Nightbreed, A River Runs Through It} and Linda Fiorentino {Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, Dogma}. By and large this film centre around these three actors.
Characters:
Craig Sheffer- Jack Cooper, outlaw and con man
Linda Fiorentino- Sarah O'Rourke, outlaw
Sam Elliott- Bill Speakes, U.S Marshall
The film starts with Jack Cooper, Sarah O' Rourke and Bill Speakes among others travelling along in a Stagecoach. Jack keeps trying to make small talk with Sarah. Speakes tells him he's wasting his time with Sarah and shows him that she is cuffed to him, and tells him Sarah is heading for the gallows. A short time later there is an attempted hold-up on the Stagecoach that get's foiled. However in the excitement Sarah is able to...

An Inca Trail through the heart of Inca Peru
Advantages: Beautiful scenery and wildlife, interesting history
Disadvantages: Very busy, expensive, still a few scars to the environment around the track
...Two summers ago I was lucky enough to visit the wonderful country of Peru, and to walk the famous Inca Trail to the lost Andean city of Machu Picchu. Yesterday, while procrastinating writing an essay, I chanced upon some pictures of Peru and reminded of this magical experience: and I hope that this review might be useful to anyone considering their own visit.
What?
The kingdom of the Incas, one of the great ancient kingdoms of South America, sprawled over a vast part of that continent between 1200 and the mid 1400s. Like any large country, infrastructure and communication were crucial for the Inca rulers in maintaining control ? a problem exacerbated by the mountainous nature of much of the Inca terrain. To solve this problem, the Incas built a huge network of trails, over which chasquis (messengers) would carry information or goods...

X Trail
Advantages: Good driving position; ability to select driving mode
Disadvantages: none
...I visited the Nissan garage wishing to exchange my existing Almera for another - until I saw the X Trail on the forecourt. I must say before I continue with the review the X Trail I bought is an import to the UK and contains non-standard equipment.
The XTrail cost me £14,000 in July 2002 - the factor that the Almera I had intended to purchase was nearly the same cost I decided to go with the XTrail with its larger interior, superior driving position and of course multi-mode driving.
The XTrail is classed as a recreational 4x4 - in other words great for the townie who does not need full 4x4 capabilities 100% of the town but would like to have the option to switch to this when necessary. The X Trail does this at the flick of a button. It has three modes; in summary these are general road driving, automatic 4x4 (the 4x4 necessity...

X-Trail on trial
Advantages: Style, advanced technology , well laid out interior design
Disadvantages: supply and I can't afford one!
...Nissan's X-Trail went on sale in October 2001 . It is an SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) aimed at both the medium and small sized 4x4 sector known as "Compact 4x4". It is competing with established vehicles such as the Freelander, Honda CR-V and Toyota's Rav 4, it is in direct competition with Fords new Maverick and Jeep Cherokee and is proving to be a huge success for Nissan.
50 years experience of building 4x4's makes Nissan one of the longest established manufacturers. Nissan have cleverly combined 4x4 chunky looks and a level of passenger car comforts and performance to give an exiting and elegant vehicle with extreme on/off road capabilities. The general styling from the Terrano and Patrol have been adopted so that at-a-glance any one can see it is from the Nissan Range. It comes in three trim levels S, Sport and SE+, a choice of two...

A climbing snob writes...
Advantages: Some decent pictures and the odd interesting article
Disadvantages: Endless boring gear reviews, advertising and articles that are the wrong sort of pedestrian
.... Because when the front cover of a publication proudly proclaims to be the biggest selling entry in its field, the sensible suspicion is that what it has actually accomplished is the laudable 'goal' of being the most abjectly bland lowest-common-denominator rubbish, rather than anything more rarefied. Will that prove to be the case with 'Trail'?
Of course it is. As a magazine, 'Trail' has gained a fearsome reputation as a laughing stock amongst outdoorsfolk, the kind of thing that if bought at all is slipped inside the pages of something less publicly embarrassing, like Railway Enthusiasts Monthly, Bunty, or Asian Babes. Some of this can be put down to the fact that, as a subset of society, walkers and climbers can be tart, to put it mildly: as a rule tales of pain and terror are considered causes for hysterics rather than sympathy. But...

The X-trail...has the X-factor !
Advantages: Practical, well built, more than capable off-road for most
Disadvantages: Engines are noisy when pushed
...The car being reviewed is the Nissan X-trail, Sports expedition model which includes a list of extras a: Satnav, rear view parking camera, climate control aircon, and a switch for the transmission, which allows the driver to choose between 4WD, 2WD, or 4WD with lock differential. The X-trail will also automatically switch between 2WD and 4WD when it detects a wheel slipping. Plus the added easy to open glass sunroof, made the car feel even more spacious.
The Nissan X-trail is the real deal, when it comes to an off-roader. In my view its strong, its tough, capable enough to clamber over rocks, and go splashing through mud. All of which is helped by the X-trail's generous ground clearance, all-condition tyres and well-protected undersides. Plus it's punchy 2 litre, 173 hp turbodiesel engine, offers ample power to go anywhere...

Critter Trail X
Advantages: Cheap and expandable
Disadvantages: Flimsy and problematic door
...After Hammond (our Syrian Hamster) had been living in his savic cage for a little while it became apparent that he was getting very bored (despite the number of toys in there!) so we decided to purchase a couple of CritterTrail cages for him and interconnect them.
One of the cages that are connected is the CritterTrail X (other is the space station looking one) and they appear (for now) to have stopped Hammonds boredom and given him a new play area to explore.
The cage at first was difficult to assemble as the instructions were poor and it did feel rather flimsy but after it was all assembled it felt ok.
The water bottle that comes with the cage is very difficult to fill but does the job.
There appears to be a problem with the door, as Hammond managed to open it a few days ago, i'm not sure wether this is a design fault...

Hydrapak AS Trail
Advantages: Easy to clean an maintain
Disadvantages: Lacks extra storage
...I wanted to try Hydrapak so I gambled on the AS Trail. I am very glad that I did. The bladder doesn't have a screw-on lid like most other systems but rather a roll-top with velcro. I know that sounds bad and I was skeptical, but it really does hold water well. I filled it up and squeezed and couldn't get it to leak. Additionally, the bladder is easily pulled inside-out so that makes drying and cleaning a breeze. Oh yeah, the hose disconnects from the bladder so you can take the bladder out without snaking the hose through the system - the connection is also excellent, no leaks.
The construction of the pack is perfect. Nothing is coming apart, no loose threads. The straps stay tight. I did find that the chest strap (I didn't even try to use to waist strap) kept pulling my jersey up exposing my lower back to mud - a problem made worse...

walking the Inca Trail before you die
Advantages: A must see, one of The Seven Wonders of The World
Disadvantages: It will always be expensive
...Walking the Inca Trail is one of those 'do before you die' experiences
so although it is not the cheapest of holidays, if its something you have always wanted to do then don't put it of any longer. I walked it in July 2007, the company I went with was Llama travel who were fantastic and I would highly recommend.
We were taken to the start of the trail by coach after spending 3 days in Cusco getting used to the altitude, which is a must, although neither my friend or I had a problem other than being a bit breathless on the first day.
After getting your passport stamped and receiveing your entrance ticket (only 500 people a day are allowed on the trail including guides and porters] you then cross a wobbly bridge over the Urubamba river and your adventure starts!. The first day breaks you in gentley although it is still a good walk...
