As I'm sure most of you know, most vans are known to make a lot of noise on the inside with panels rumbling and banging, and the Transit is no different, however a simple backboard behind the seats lower that noise by about 70%, and with the mini bus version like I have the insulation is excellent. You could hear a pin drop, but that's not really why I like them so much. Aside from the well designed interior you should notice immediately that for a commercial vehicle the height of the body from the road is very low. This makes general handling very much like a large car, even on the corners it's smooth. The only time it feels like a van is when I have a lot of weight inside or something very tall. Now... ...I bought my first transit about four years ago.I only had £1500 to spend, so I searched Auto Trader and found a P reg for £1450, which i purchased. I wasn't particularly looking for a Ford, any van would have done at the right price, and this one filled that criteria. It had 140,000 on the clock which was a bit worrying. I needn't have worried though as the van went on to reach 184,000 miles before i finally scrapped it about 2 months ago. During that time the van just kept running and running with no engine trouble what so ever. I didn't want to scrap it at the end, but the bodywork got so bad (rusty) that I was forced to scrap a mechanically sound and sweet running van as you can't keep showing up at customers houses in a rust bucket, when you go to price a job (I'm a builder you see). ...I bought this Transit just under a year ago with 120k miles on the clock. It had just scraped through an Mot, and I was left with a few problems to sort out to make it into the superb van it is now. As with all Transits rust will creep in at quite an early stage, especially around the wheel arches and doors, any scrapes or dings to the bodywork will bring on the problem even faster. Due to the job they are designed for, this will be inevitable. Cleaning & polishing (a transit !! ) of the thin coat of white paint will slow this process down. Sliding and rear door hinges/catches will benefit from regular visits from an oil can. Staying with rust ! , another problem I've had is with the front window lifters. ...As a freelance driver I get to drive may vehicles from lovely little comp[act vans like this up to 7.5 tonne however for a small van I like it (almost likening it a lot) Fords Tourneo Connect Is A Van That Thinks It's a Car. Or Vice Versa. Either Way It's Something Different From The Blue Oval. we've had vehicles like Citroens Berlingo Multispace, Renaults Kangoo and Fiats Doblo performing just such tasks for the past few years but these have been decidedly lightweight approaches to the issue. Ford is not a company renowned for getting to market first, preferring to see which way the wind is blowing first. You get one heck of a lot of van for your money with all mod cons in the cabin Costs: Fuel economy is pretty good, even with a full load it will give 25mpg and will do better if you keep the speed down. Insurance is not too bad either. Reliability: Pretty good really. If you look after it the likelihood is that it will outlast its owner. Driving: This is great, a real surprise. ...The new ford transit 2.4 duratorq they say is the backbone of britian, or is it? As an independant motor vehicle repairer looking after a fleet of 250 transits I see more of the good and bad points of the van than most, even seeing the after sales from the customers side and not just what Ford say. Now the the good bits. The new transit comes in a multitude of guises with different engine sizes, lengths, roof heights and front or rear wheel drive.This one is the 2.4 long wheel base, semi high roof, rear wheel drive.{try saying that after 4 pints}.The load space is 3399 mm long , can cope with upto 1600kg , will take 4 euro pallets or 8x4 boards........................................OH god i'm fed up with this specification tripe, whats it like ? Advantages: New dash,cd player, gearstick.

...The Ford Transit! I have a 56 plate T300 transit low roof standard model. To start with, the new dash and standard CD player was long overdue! The dash is now fitted with a digital mileage meter which is handy when I can't be bothered to go to the petrol station; it tells me that I need to top and how many miles it has left. There are more silly sized compartments than the old transit which is handy in some cases but I struggle to think what the two on top of the dash can store. They are too small for A4 paper and the driver side has a power output inside, which I suppose is well positioned for a sat nav but I don't have one. The switch of gear stick from floor to dash is the best change in the van. It has brought the loyal dinosaur up to date and the overall cab environment is a better place to be.
