The South Yorkshire Transport Museum
Review of The South Yorkshire Transport Museum by  micksheff

Advantages: Nostalgic, Historical
Disadvantages: Admission Charges, Limited Opening Hours

...The South Yorkshire Transport Museum can be found at Aldwarke, near Rotherham in South Yorkshire. Until recently this Transport Museum was located in the former Tinsley Tram Sheds between Sheffield and Rotherham. I visited here about 4 years ago and it was then called the Sheffield Bus Museum. Now it has relocated, it has been given a new name, the South Yorkshire Transport Museum. The former Sheffield Bus Museum first opened its doors to the Public ten years ago, in 1997. In December 2006 this Museum closed, re-opening at its present location a few weeks ago, in the Spring of 2007. This Museum has a collection of Trams and Buses that were once in use in Sheffield and the surrounding area. All of these have been fully restored and are in pristine condition. Almost all of them are also in full working order and when the weather... Read review

London Transport Museum
Review of London Transport Museum (London) by  brereton66

Advantages: Great place to take kids
Disadvantages: Not very big and a bit pricey for adults.

...The London Transport Museum recently completed a large scale root and branch refurbishment and reopened towards the end of 2007. I know this because I walk past it every day on the way to work and could witness the inch by inch progress being made over the last year. The LT Museum always had a reputation as a good place to visit. One of the first museums to offer a wide range of interactive exhibits it has always been a popular attraction, enhanced by its excellent location. However, despite again working on its doorstep a dozen years ago I have never previously been tempted to visit. I mean, it's just a bunch of trains and buses isn't it and I see enough of those commuting. Having children has changed my attitude though, and when the opportunity came recently to have a family day out this was near the top of the list. Getting... Read review

Dover Transport Museum
Review of Dover Transport Museum by  Jamie73

Advantages: Interesting to find out about the history of transport, cheap entrance
Disadvantages: Could maybe do with longer opening hours for the cafe

...The Dover transport Museum is located in a small village just outside Dover called Whitfield. The Transport Museum is located on Willingdon Road which is near the Whitfield Business Park. Some of the bus routes from Dover town centre run in this direction so it should be easy enough to use public transport to get here. In the entrance to the museum there is a very large display of an old vintage car parked in front of an old garage with replica petrol pumps. Alongside the entrance display there are many cars from many generations which are parked in a row which visitors can walk along to view the cars. Outside the main entrance there is a steam train which is set on permanent tracks from the days when trains were believed to have a heart and soul! The Dover Transport Museum is now at its permanent site after lottery funding... Read review

The London Transport Museum, good or bad?
Review of London Transport Museum (London) by  james564

Advantages: Educational. Find out loads about london transport history.
Disadvantages: Boring if your not interested in transport.

...Well i think the museum is very good, it focuses on how transport has developed over the years. The parts of the collection involve history of the tube, buses, trams and taxi's. It also shows in most of those topics how they are probably going to progress even further into the future. ..: Where Is It? :.. The museum is located in Central London in Covent Garden. It is missable though cos i didn't see it, but there is an underground sign outside with Museum written on it so you should find it quite easily. ..: What Are The Contents Of The Collection? :.. The museum is home to an old district line tube train which has got over a million miles on the milometer. A few trams from the early 90's which used to run on the Kingsway Underpass. Some buses that were pulled by horses in the 1800's and war-period. There is also a brand new... Read review

Transport yourself back in time
Review of London Transport Museum (London) by  duskmaiden

Advantages: child friendly, something for most people
Disadvantages: fairly static collection, a few pointless audio visuals

...Transport is in my blood. My father was a bus driver and is obsessed by most things that have wheels and moves. Trains, buses, cars, and lorries, you name it he has videos, books and models of them. I've caught the bug and become a bit of a London Underground junkie being fascinated by the history and development of this much maligned transport system. I have become such a geek I recently took a one day course on the Art and Architecture of London Transport. This was held in the subject for this review, the newly reopened London Transport Museum in Covent Garden. I have been to a number of Transport museum such as the tram museum at Critch and the Glasgow Transport Museum but the London one had so far eluded me. Housed in the old Victorian Ffower market the museum has had a 22.5 million face lift and relaunch. The museum... Read review

A Complete History Of London Transport
Review of London Transport Museum (London) by  EnglishPatient

Advantages: An evocative history of London Transport, some beautifully renovated vehicles
Disadvantages: Restricted access on the upper level

...scratch with comparitively primtive tools and methods, was necessarily gradual and problematic. In an age now where the current Government cannot even construct a firm pedestrain bridge without farce, the concept of creating an entire subterranean transport network - covering the entire city and later reaching out beyond Central London - in the course of 20-30 years would be extremely remote to say the least. Yet that is precisely what was achieved in the first quarter of the 1900s. The story of London Transport is retold and brought to life at its Museum in Covent Garden. An interactive exhibition featuring stunningly restored original vehicles and paraphenalia captures the essence of bygone eras and technology, while simultaneously looking at the role public transport will have in London's future. From a personal point of view... Read review

Transport Heaven
Review of East Anglia Transport Museum by  321321

Advantages: Wide Variety Of Transport To Choose From
Disadvantages: Space Available

...The East Anglia Transport Museum is situated in Carlton Colville, Suffolk. It is a company limited by guarantee and all of the staff are volunteers (except contractors etc). The membership is very successful and there are a large number of members. Now for some specific information... Vehicles ****************************************************** The East Anglia Transport Museum is the only museum in the country where you have the oppurtunity to travel on Trams, Trolleybuses and the Railway at the same time. On special events an external motorbus service is in operation. You can use this to travel to/from the museum or just to go for a ride! Trams-There are three working trams at the moment - 159 from Blackpool, 474 from Amsterdam and 1858 from good old London (London is best!). Trolleybuses-I am not really interested... Read review

The scope on the Skopos museum
Review of Yorkshire Motor Museum, Batley by  Paid.Ark.Man

Advantages: Free, The viewing workshop, changing displays
Disadvantages: Parking, not really worth travelling to from outside Yorkshire

...for disabled access, and into the museum though a second set of doors. Once inside you are greeted with a light and airy big room as the roof is mostly glass and you instantly can see what's on offer to view as the whole museum is laid out over one floor space. It was smaller that I thought it would be but this historic building is a good venue to display the museum collection. At the entrance to the right there is a collection of classic and historic motorcycles which has some of the great names from the past like Vincent, Velocette and of course some old Triumph's. Directly behind them is the first of two workshops where they carry out the restoration work and at the time when I visited they were working on an old bi-plane as the museum is about transport and not just road vehicles. To the right the was the second of the workshops... Read review

History In Motion
Review of East Anglia Transport Museum by  C-J-C

Advantages: Lots to see and do, working history, unlimited rides, friendly
Disadvantages: You'll want to keep coming back, limited space for expansion

...Being a transport enthusiast, I have visited many transport museums around the country, some I've liked a lot, some less so. I have a fair number on my doorstep as well, including some very successful and popular ones, yet I keep getting drawn half way across the country to the East Anglia Transport Museum. From the start, the EATM has something that makes it stand out from most other transport museums, it's not a stuffed and mounted, touch me not type of museum, it's a living, breathing, "hands on" (or perhaps more accurately, bums on) museum. It's also unique in being the only place in the UK where you can travel on Trams, Trolleybuses and a Railway. This allows people to experience the sights and sounds of two forms of transport that are now extinct in the UK (trolleybuses and "proper" trams). This seems to excite everyone, young... Read review

Are you a fan of the Fan Museum?
Review of Fan Museum, Greenwich by  duskmaiden

Advantages: good shop, a small but good collection
Disadvantages: small, not a children's museum

...A fashionable woman in the past needed a number of accessories, shoes, hat, and a fan. recently reviewed Stockport's hat museum. So I thought I would also review the Greenwich Fan Museum as it would compliment the previous review nicely. The Fan Museum at Greenwich is the first and only museum to be dedicated to fans. It was founded by Helene Alexander in 1991 to share her life long passion for the subject. She has a collection of 3500 objects which are not all on show at the same time due to the fragility of many of the fans. It's housed in two adjoining skilfully restored Georgina houses on Royle Hill in the centre of Greenwich. The museum is just opposite the north western corner of Greenwich Park just round the corner from the Maritime Museum. It is easily accessed by public transport as a number of bus services run very near... Read review
