Travel Lodge, Slough

Advantages: location
Disadvantages: basic

...Staying at the Travel Lodge in Slough is a good option if you have to stay overnight after a long flight and don?t want to pay through the nose for hotels in the Heathrow airport area. Slough is also close to Legoland and Chessington World of Adventures. We stayed at the Travel Lodge in June, 2002. The double room we had was basic, but we didn?t expect anything else for 50 pounds a night. Our room wasn?t facing a busy road so that was a bonus. What we had was a double bed (with a duvet), a desk and chair, telephone, hairdryer, tea/coffee-making facilities, TV without a remote control for some reason. The bathroom with shower was fairly clean. Breakfast was OK, full English or continental. There?s a bar with a TV next to the dining-room, so we could enjoy our breakfast and watch the recent football match at the same time. We...

Arebbusch Travel Lodge

Advantages: Ideal base in Windhoek, very easy access to the centre of town, lovely chalets and friendly service. Campsites can be dusty, but plenty of shade.
Disadvantages: Busy road outside the gates, but you can't have everything!

...South of the city, but within easy distance to the centre of Windhoek, this charming travel lodge is an ideal base for both families and independent travellers. We much preferred here to anywhere in the centre of town, mainly due to being able to come through the manned gates and shut ourselves away in our lovely chalet. These are clean, spacious and quiet, the kitchens are moderate, but the showers are a godsend. And a double bed goes down a treat after weeks of camping! The staff are friendly and professional in reception and the restaurant . Be patient with Namibian time however - it's far slower than anywhere back in the UK and anyway, why rush in a country of such awesome landscapes - things will get done and happen....eventually! I have also camped here and found the sites lovely, as anywhere in Namibia they can get...

Give Castle Lodge the Dodge

Advantages: A historical building
Disadvantages: disappointing and spoilt by the owners

...CASTLE LODGE It was a family day out in Ludlow and whilst I was sitting resting on the bench, waiting for my hubby to return from checking the car and the parking fees, I noticed this really old Tudor style house opposite and on closer inspection discovered that it was open to the public. We didn?t go in straight away, but I did drop a big hint like, ?I want to go in there before we go home? to the family, so that they would not be surprised after the visit to the castle that we went in here. After we had a lovely lunch in the café situated next door to the lodge after a amazing trip around the castle. We were all in high spirits and enjoying our food and refreshments, I dropped the bombshell that I wanted to see the house, they did try to dissuade me as they were now getting slightly tired and wanted to do a little retail...

Lovely lodges and amazing hot tubs!

Advantages: Nice lodges, fantastic hot tubs!
Disadvantages: Surrounding area not so good

...at the supermarket and cooked it in the lodge. This was the only downside to our stay, as it is nice to stay somewhere where there are some nice pub-restaurants or places to eat which are not too far away or within walking distance, but to be honest it did look a little run down. So bear in mind you do have to travel a little further afield to Musselburgh to find some decent restaurants and bars. We did also drive to Edinburgh and had a lovely day there, but to be honest we were quite happy spending our evenings in the lodge, and the hot tub! I had to drag myself out of it as it was so relaxing! I would recommend Drummohr as a good place to visit for a short break to chill out and relax, and would go back again. It's just a shame the surrounding area isn't as nice, but it didn't bother us too much as we still had a lovely, quiet relaxing break...

Thistling in Bristol

Advantages: Very nice service
Disadvantages: Very NOT nice prices

...I’ve just come back from my 6th stay at a Thistle Hotel this year. This is because I have a mad passion for travelling up and down the country staying in various hotels that belong to the Thistle chain; quite fascinating once you get into the swing of things. I love the same old set out of the rooms and same old extortionist prices that always seem to equal horrible tasting food. Not convincing? Ok, well the truth is the company I work for (ICL) has negotiated some kind of contract with Thistle hotels (unfortunately), which means that if I ever go away on a business trip then my first choice should be a Thistle Hotel as we’ll get accommodation cheaper than a normal individual off the street. This still ends up costing an absolute fortune at times though. I’ve stayed in the London Queensway, London Bayswater...

Disney's Wilderness Lodge: Welcome Home

Advantages: A hotel brimming with personality and themed to perfection
Disadvantages: Expensive. But you get what you pay for.

...of staff in the hotel seems to have been touched by that famous Disney attitude. Nothing is too much trouble for them, and I cannot give them enough praise. The hotel oozes that unique mix of fun, imagination and sophistication that can only be found in a Disney hotel. THE ROOMS The facts will tell you that Wilderness Lodge has 728 rooms in total, including a separate building built in 2002 called the Wilderness Lodge Villas, offering studios and one and two bedroom apartments as part of the Disney Vacation Club Scheme. There is a good variety of different types of rooms depending on your individual needs (e.g. travelling as a couple or with a family), all decorated in the same charming Pacific Northwest theme as the rest of the hotel. All rooms offer the amenities that you would expect (television, hairdryer, safe, and so on...

Contemporary Arts in Bristol

Advantages: Good variety of events, many of which are free
Disadvantages: Hard to say

...My second visit to Bristol was on a decidedly damp Saturday afternoon, so we were looking for places to spend some time inside. Having walked down the steep slope of Park Street and not being in any hurry to go back up, I suggested that the Arnolfini arts centre might not be too much further to walk. Situated on Bristol's Harbourside, it is easily reached by walking along the quayside from The Centre. From the south you can get there by crossing the swing bridge on Prince Street. Admission is free, so it is definitely worth a visit if you are interested in the arts. The Arnolfini has no permanent collection of artworks, so exhibitions change from time to time. There is currently (August 2008) a display described as an 'interactive shopping experience' entitled 'Far West'. Although not exactly my cup of tea, there was a degree...

BRISTOLS AHOY

Advantages: Big enough to be good
Disadvantages: Small enough to be friendly

...across the whole of Bristol is fantastic. The @Bristol complex, rather new to Bristol, it features the @Bristol centre, the IMAX cinema, and the Wild Walk. Great for the young and old, the IMAX is one of the largest in the country and provides a 3D experience, the centre is very scientific, you can learn to build a bridge, learn all about the bits of your body, take in the Night Sky experience or make your own TV programme. Not having been in the Wild Walk I cant comment but it looks very exotic from outside with all its tropical plants. You can also take a trip round the Harbour, passing the Industrial Museum, Bristol Bridge which has been there for centuries, and passing the old docks. Did I mention that John Cabot sailed from here to Newfoundland in 1497? Bristol is also full of little treasures, too numerous to mention here...

BODGED LODGE

Advantages: Better than a bench on the street
Disadvantages: Everything else

...Bristol’s new central Travelodge is located on Anchor Road, which runs parallel with the river in the direction of Clifton. The “central” location descriptor is slightly misleading, in that the hotel is a fair distance from most of the City centre’s amenities and attractions. Bristol Temple Meads train station is a definite taxi or bus journey – Bristol Parkway is even further. The hotel is about twenty minutes’ walk from the main coach station, and the shops are a little further still. The hotel is well placed for the new @Bristol attraction, which is only a couple of minutes’ walking distance, and for the Hippodrome, but otherwise I wouldn’t have thought that this hotel was particularly well placed for visitors. The hotel has its own car park, and is easily accessible from the main link...

Quality Hotel at Bristol

Advantages: Well located and pretty cost effective
Disadvantages: Busy in the Summer

...has 1,708 hotels and 145,872 rooms. EXPRESS by HOLIDAY INN (commonly called Holiday Inn Express) at BRISTOL NORTH The full address is: Express By Holiday Inn BRISTOL-NORTH BRISTOL PARKWAY BUSINESS PARK BRISTOL, BS34 8SJ The Express by Holiday Inn at Bristol North is situated close to the M4, M5 & M32 motorways and it provides the ideal base to visit Bristol & the West Country. It?s location also makes it a good stopover point for those heading on holiday to destinations further afield. In addition to the good road connections, Bristol Parkway Railway station (with regular connections to London, the Midlands, South Wales and the South West) is only half a mile from the hotel. Bristol Airport is 18 miles away. The hotel has over 130 fully equipped en-suite rooms over four floors. Each room features an en...
