Dover Gateway to England

Advantages: Busy port. Shopping is reasonably good. White cliffs and Castle are attractive
Disadvantages: Lacks character

...Bounded on one side by the Channel coastline and the famous White Cliffs,Dover in Kent is very much a maritime town. Throughout the ages this surprisingly small town has been the gateway into England from Continental Europe. For many Britons heading for holidays in Europe,Dover is the place to hurry through in order to board the ferry or hovercraft at the two passenger docks. Few have the time or even the inclination to explore the town. The well known landmarks of the White Cliffs and imposing Dover Castle located on a dramatic hill top setting blend well with the town's bustling port. You can enjoy a birds-eye-view of the busiest passenger port in the world from the Langdon Cliffs picnic site. The town itself frankly is not particularly distinguished. It is rather lacking in architectural character compared to the likes...

Dover Museum

Advantages: free entrance for locals, nice Bronze Age Boat on display
Disadvantages: None

...Location Dover Museum is centrally located in the market square area of Dover town and is within walking distance to the train and bus stations. Prices Admission is free to local residents, although you do need to prove that you live in Dover by showing a document such as a bank statement or utility bill. Adults who do not reside in Dover will be charged two pound fifty and children are OAPs are charged one pound fifty. The Museum Dover Museum was first opened in 1836. The museum is spread across three floors. Just inside the entrance, is the history exhibit which traces the history of Dover from the Stone Age to the time of the Saxons. Here you can view the Bronze Age boat which is believed to be the worlds oldest known sea going boat. Here you can also view the array of Saxon jewellery, which is kindly borrowed from...

Dover Leisure Centre

Advantages: You don't need to be a member to use the facilities
Disadvantages: Certain parts may be shut due to private events

...Living in Dover means that we don't have too many facilities. Dover Leisure Centre is about the only sporting facility in Dover other than the football and rugby pitches. Location Dover Leisure Centre is located on Townwall Street in Dover which is pretty much on the seafront and within walking distance to the Port of Dover. It is also within walking distance of Dover town, Dover Priory Station and Pencester bus station. Facilities There are two swimming pools at Dover Leisure Centre. There is a main swimming pool which is 25 metres and also a learner / childrens pool. In the main pool, there are two lanes of the swimming pool which are sectioned off to create one slow, and one fast swimming lane. The rest of the pool is then literally just open water where people can swim at their own leisure. The smaller pool is much...

Dover to Dunkerque Return Trip

Advantages: Cheap, Clean, Simple and No Crowds!!!
Disadvantages: Primarily Frieght Orientated

...Bit of Background Information. Normally we holiday in Normandy so would generally use P&O from Portsmouth, but this year decided to return to Austria - thus alternative ferry routes were needed. Norfolkline Themselves. Norfolkline have been operating for about 4 years now between Dover and Dunkerque in France. The crossing time is roughly 2 Hours. They have built a very successful freight route using three purpose built ferries. For the last couple of years they have been taking bookings from Cars, Motorbikes and Motor Caravans etc. No coaches or footpassengers. Because they are mainly freight orientated they are a budget carrior - no flash glamour of other operators and no paying for things you dont need / use. They are currently building two more purpose built ferries, this time with the car passenger in mind. These...

Travelling From Page To Screen

Advantages: Nice enough film
Disadvantages: Doesn't come anywhere near the book.

... ** Film Only Review ** Two years ago I read The Time Travelers Wife by Audrey Niffenegger and was absolutely blown away, so when I heard it was to be made into a film I knew it was something I had to see. I was kept waiting though, as the release was postponed by a year, however on the 14 th of August 2009 it finally made it's way to the cinema screens. The plot is an unusual one. Clare Abshire (Rachel McAdams) met Henry DeTamble (Eric Bana) when she was 6 years old and he was 36. They married when she was 22 and he 30. How is that possible? Well Henry has a genetic disorder which results in him time traveling involuntarily at any time, usually to a place in his past which his significant to him, and occasionally to the future. The film begins with a 5 year old Henry in a car with his Mother, driving in the snow...

Dover Priory Train Station

Advantages: recently refurbished, nice cafe
Disadvantages: in a grotty area of Dover town

...History Dover Priory Train Station was first opened on 22 July 1861. It was originally called Dover Town but was renamed Dover Priory in 1863. The name Dover Priory was taken from the remains of St Martins Priory which was situated close to the station. Dover Priory Train Station suffered greatly during the war and was actually the first place in Dover that was bombed. Dover Priory Dover Priory is the only train station in Dover and is located about a 5 minute walk from the town centre of Dover. There is a free shuttle bus which runs from the train station to Dover Docks. In August 2006 Dover Priory train station was renovated. These renovations included the refurbishment of the station building itself, the booking hall and the toilet facilities. CCTV cameras were installed which now cover the platforms, waiting areas and ticket...

Dover Castle - Worth A Visit

Advantages: Excellent condition castle, excellent museum
Disadvantages: It is in Dover

...It would be interesting to see how the opening of the Channel tunnel has influenced attendance figures at Dover Castle. Now that so much cross-channel traffic starts to cross over some 15 miles before Dover it is likely a visit to Dover’s beautiful castle is not included on many holiday itineraries. That people no longer take the opportunity to visit the castle is a shame. Whilst in France travellers may visit many chateaux in France or Germany which are probably not as attractive as Dover’s castle. Dover Castle is similar in size and feel to Windsor Castle and the undulating ground and superb central area add to the impression. Set high above the white cliffs Dover castle dates back to the 11th century with the original defences built by Harold being strengthened by William the Conqueror. The superb keep and inner...

Dancing in Dover Street

Advantages: Good food and atmosphere
Disadvantages: Can be pricey

...This is the second year in a row my company Christmas Party has been held here, at the Dover Street Restaurant and Bar. The restaurant is on Dover Street (surprise, surprise!) in Mayfair, not far from Green Park tube station. Lucky me, the meal and drinks were all paid for! However the a la Carte menu, Party menus and wine lists, with prices, are available in pdf format on their website (although we had neither of these two party menus shown) - http://www.doverst.co.uk/food.php. It would appear if you are dining a la Carte then expect to pay up to £12 for a starter (Foie Gras, you evil people), but usually they come in at about £8-9.00. Mains start at £13.95 for the two vegetarian options, going up to £21.95 for a steak. House wines are £14.50 a bottle and go up to silly money for the top end stuff. The Atmosphere After...

Travelling compactly

Advantages: Folds up compactly, bright colours, use as a cot or play pen
Disadvantages: Thin mattress base

...~*~*~INTRODUCTION~*~*~ My mother in law wanted to buy a travel cot when my son was born as she will be looking after him when I go back to work. We looked around on the internet and when she saw the Graco compact she decided that was the one, she loved that it was nice and bright and thought my son would enjoy playing in there as well as sleeping. We ordered it from Kiddicare but unfortunately they have stopped selling it. I have since seen it on Amazon, Halfords and Ebay though for roughly the same prices. ~*~*~FEATURES~*~*~ -Suitable from birth to around 3 years. -It comes in a handy carry case, making it easy for travel. -The travel cot unfolds easily and I actually put it up in a couple of minutes on my first attempt. -The sides are mesh which is nice and soft for wriggly babies banging their heads, also...

A trip back to another world

Advantages: Childhood memories, classic films
Disadvantages: Sequel not as good as the first

...It was New Year's Day and I was feeling somewhat under the weather (part self-inflicted, and partly not I have to add!), so settled on the sofa with my duvet and put one of my Christmas DVDs in the player! This was one of my gifts bought by myself for myself from my huge Amazon wishlist! I have memories of watching 'Escape to Witch Mountain' and to a lesser extent its sequel 'Return from Witch Mountain' as a child. The box set of the two DVDs set me back £5.98 - a bargain if it was going to bring back happy childhood memories! On Ciao I have chosen to review the box set (illustrated with screenshots from both), while on DooYoo I am reviewing each film separately. Escape to Witch Mountain 'Escape to Witch Mountain' was made in 1975 (directed by John Hough) and is based upon a book (with the same name...
