Fonana di Trevi

Advantages: Make your wish
Disadvantages: No

...If you do love the city of Rome and you wish you go back, the best place to make this wish is at the Fonana di Trevi-remember the song " Three coins in a fountain". Legends says that by throwing a coin over your left shoulder into the fountain guarantees a return to this beautiful city. Throwing three coins mean you will get love, luck and be able to return to Rome!!. I threw three down the fountain the last time I was there - really hope this comes true. The Hollywood movies "Three coins in a fountain" and "Roman holiday" were filmed here-that's why this place is so well-known. The fountain is huge with places to sit aroud it. However, it's difficult to squeeze in as it's always packed with people, a very busy place indeed....

Three cons and a fountain

Advantages: A must see in Rome
Disadvantages: It's only a fountain

...Ah, the Trevi Fountain. Some would say that it's the most beautiful fountain in all of Rome. Well, I wouldn't know about that - not having visited all 7,000 of them. Ok, that's maybe an exagerration, but there are quite a few of the old fontanas dotted around the eternal city. One thing's for sure though, it's certainly an impressive site...or sight, even. You would think that such a world famous and much visited tourist attraction would be situated in some grand piazza or boulevard. You'd be wrong. It's actually tucked away at the meeting point three nondescript road (tre vie) in a little square called, somewhat unimaginatively, Piazza del Trevi. Perhaps the mundane stroll through narrow streets before encountering this masterpiece of baroque architecture is part of its appeal...perhaps not. But it's definitely a gobsmacker. You...

Did you throw your coin in?

Advantages: Beautiful
Disadvantages: Busy

...This was one of the first attractions that we visited when we were in Rome and it was a very enjoyable experience. Fontana di Trevi (Trevi Fountain) is the largest of the Baroque fountains of Rome. It is 85 feet high (25.9 meters) and 65 feet wide (19.8 meters). The fountain is at the juncture of three roads and it marks the terminal point of the Aqua Virgo, an ancient aqueduct that supplied water to Rome. In 19 BC the Romans located a pure water source 14 miles from the city (from the Salone Springs) and Aqua Virgo supplied the fountains of the historic centre of Rome with water. It served Rome for more than four hundred years. In 1730 Pope Clement XII organised a contest which Nicola Salvi actually lost - but was awarded the commission anyway. Work began in 1732 and the fountain was completed thirty years later in 1762...

The Fountain is one of the Wonders of Rome

Advantages: stunning masterpiece
Disadvantages: crowded during the day

...When on a short break in Rome as I was in March 2007, it is very easy to find yourself in a position where you have to sacrifice seeing one sight in order to see another. The Trevi Fountain (Fontana Di Trevi) was never in danger of being sacrificed, and if you go there for yourself you will see why. In my opinion it is the most beautiful and stunning fountain in all of Rome. This baroque marble masterpiece stands 85 feet high and 65 feet wide, dominates the square in which it stands and is constantly crowded by tourists such is its popularity. Like many of the wonderful sights of Rome, this is free to go and see. Walking down the narrow cobbled streets you can here the crescendo of noise as the water becomes louder and louder, then suddenly as if out of nowhere you are confronted by a mass of people standing in awe in front...

Dont Forget To Throw In A Coin

Advantages: Magnificent edifice.
Disadvantages: Nothing at all

...~ ~ One of the most famous and well known tourist attractions in Rome is the famous Trevi Fountain, just a hop, skip, and jump from the equally famous Spanish Steps, and next door to the “English Ghetto” area, where the renowned romantic poets Keats and Shelley both sat and drank their Chianti while composing their immortal prose. ~ ~ Immortalised forever in the famous 1954 movie, “Three Coins In The Fountain”, the legend has it that anyone who tosses a coin over their left shoulder into the waters of this fountain will ensure that they will once again visit the famous ancient city of Rome before they die. Thus literally millions of coins are thrown into its waters, that are then collected by the Roman authorities and the money donated to worthwhile charities. ~ ~ The fountain was originally built in...

A Voice of the "Eternal City"

Advantages: Wonderful Italian architecture
Disadvantages: Narrow streets or am I just being picky!

...The sight and sound of Rome?s many fountains moved Italian composer Ottorino Respighi to compose a suite entitled ?The Fountains of Rome?. Let?s visit one of the most stunning examples ? the Trevi Fountain. As we walk down a narrow street that leads to the fountain and turn a corner, we are greeted by a sight that takes our breath away. It is the huge Trevi fountain, 20 meters wide and 26 meters high, which dominates a small square. What an impressive structure to be tucked away in such a confined space! The Trevi Fountain was commissioned by Pope Clement XII and designed by Italian architect Niccolo Salvi. Construction was started in 1732 and completed in 1792. The fountain is fed by the first century B.C.E. Aqua Virgo aqueduct, which begins some 13 kilometres from the city. The theme of the fountain, which is built against...

Most amazing place i have ever been in the world!

Advantages: Breathtaking
Disadvantages: You have to leave sometime!

...I fully recommend anyone and everyone visiting the Trevi Fountain in Rome, Italy. It is the most magical place i have ever been and it truly takes your breath away. I recommend you going at night if it is possible as the lighting behind the fountain show's it at its best. The fountain itself is not the same as you would maybe imagine ... if you have never seen photos that is. It is not something that you walk all the way round for example, it is actually all on a wall of a Palazzo. The first fountain at the site was built in 1453 by Pope Nikolaus V., financed from wine-taxes. In 1732 Clemens XII ordered the current fountain to be built, and about 30 years later his predecessor Clemens XIII christined it. It is suspected that the architect was Nicola Salvi, but that is not a known fact. The sculpture in the middle is Neptun...

Excellent, definately be back

Advantages: Central, beside termi station, lovely rooms, rooftop garden bar.
Disadvantages: No restaurant, just breakfast room and rooftop bar opens at 7

...I cannot praise this hotel enough. I got married in rome recently and booked this hotel for me and my guests and was more than happy. This hotel is great. The rooms are lovely , clean, the staff are great. Its in a great location. Most of the big sites were within 5-10 mins walking distance, trevi fountain, colousium, etc. Its on Romes main shopping street. The breakfast is lovely. The don't have a restaurant, but have a lovely rooftop garden, which opens from 7 every night, really nice and mellow, have background music and they have snacks, cocktails. There is an irish pub 2 doors down from it if your feeling hungry for a bigger meal. The staff are so helpful and friendly. Its is also 2 mins walk from Tremi station so all you have to do is get a bus or train to there and its a 2 mins walk down the street. I will defiantely go back here...

Review of Hotel Artemide, Rome

Rome - famous Romantic City

Advantages: Lives up to all the hype and expectations
Disadvantages: Expensive of course - and very very hot and usually crowded

...Rome is truly one of the most romantic and historically interesting places that one can ever hope to visit. From the amazing Vatican city to the Trevi fountain and the Spanish steps, it is easy to see why it was not built in a day. Unfortunately, to see the town in its true beauty requires an extremely early start, especially in the case of the Vatican. The year 2000 is speculated to be attracting twice the amount of tourism as 1999 due to holy pilgrimages taking place. A word of warning – in order to show respect tourists are sometimes required to cover bare knees and shoulders when entering religious buildings. Gather some of the local currency and make sure to throw one or more coins in the fountain depending on your wishes – and the Colosseum also merits a visit with its ‘authentic’ gladiators outside!...
