Trier - mendous

Advantages: Historical, Beautiful & Friendly Place, Relatively Inexpensive
Disadvantages: Not a lot for kids

...Excuse the op title, but Trier is a fab place, that won't be known to too many people. Trier is officially Germany's oldest city and is located close to the Luxembourg border in Western Germany, in a major wine growing region on the Mosel. Historians & booze fans would love a trip to Trier, I'll explain.... Trier was a former Roman stronghold and a number of the monuments made it safely through the wars. If we start in the town centre, there is the imposing Porta Nigra, which will give you a good view of the city. Trier is also home to a number of cathedrals, one of which, according to cathedral fans(!) rival the best in Europe. Along with the Basilica and other ruins, the historian will find a number of things to do in the area. Trier is also Karl Marx's birthplace and there is a museum and other related stuff in...

Lar von Trier's The Anti-Musical Musical

Advantages: Brilliant music numbers, fantastic performances, mature themes
Disadvantages: Dark, downbeat tone not suitable for those who want to be uplifted

.... Every time she is "dreaming", I feel inclined to yell at her to snap out of it. Dancer in the Dark is a very courageous and bold "avant garde" style film directed by Lars von Trier. However, this is not a very enjoyable movie and it's hard to empathize with Selma. While what she did in the end was very noble, it is generally hard to empathize with a person who has put herself in trouble in the first place--especially someone who is easily manipulated and lacks will. Then again, perhaps this is the message Lars von Trier wanted to deliver… Dancer in the Dark is too depressing, but does that mean I don't recommend it? On the contrary, I think it is definitely worth seeing, especially if you want to witness a modern example of expressionistic cinema....

The best Lars Von Trier's film?

Advantages: The soundtrack, the actors...
Disadvantages: The length, perhaps, and the sadness...

...continue his work. Bess get lost and counts the days before he will come back, she prays God and asks him for Jan to return earlier. That's what happens...but not in the sense she wanted. Due to an accident, Jan is injured and stays a very long time in the hospital, fighting against the death. As he is unable to make love anymore, he asks his woman to sleep with other guys and to tell him afterwards how it was. Despite of the anger of her family (Katrin Cartlidge is in that film Bess's sister in law) and of God, she accepts......... I don't want to tell you the end of the film, but it's worth watching it! The problem of the film is to be too long, but I think i's Lars Von Trier's style: to examine in depth the characters' feelings, and to focus on the relationshipe between human beings. The soundrack is one of the best I...

Review of Breaking The Waves (DVD)

hello Eurotrash, my name is Lars Von Trier

Advantages: compelling visuals, some great acting
Disadvantages: some overdone visuals, some weak acting

...A cynical, feelbad musical, this is by turns brilliant and embarrassing. Weirdly, the parts that don't work seem to be that way by design. Icelandic elfin singer Bjork's plays Selma, a downtrodden factory worker who is going blind, and who works round the clock to raise the money for a sight saving op for her son Gene. Occasionally, she has a Singing detective style musical reverie. Her acting veers from deeply affecting to terrible, and her co-stars David Morse and Catherine Denenvue are equally uneven, Morse's smooth US acting style clashing violently with Bjork's freeform weirdness, and Denenvue's cool Euro art style. Director Lars Von Trier uses the same seemingly accidnetal camcorder Dogma style he pioneered with The Idiots, and makes the melodramatic story whizz along. Only during the dance numbers is the film let down by...

Breaking The Waves - Film Only

Advantages: Far better performances than the film deserves.
Disadvantages: Let's see - sadistic, inhumane, dishonest, cowardly...

...A twisted, sadistic, manipulative, nasty little piece of nothing very much from the twisted, sadistic, manipulative and nasty Lars Von Trier, Breaking The Waves is, like his later Dancer In The Dark and Dogville, a cynical, misogynist melodrama that comes a hell of a lot closer to "Torture Porn" than anything Eli Roth has ever crafted. Emily Watson plays the childlike, mentally unstable Bess McNeil - the Holy Fool of the piece, pretty much - who, as a means of pleasing her recently paralysed husband Jan (Stellan Skarsgård), sets about prostituting herself to an array of increasingly unpleasant men, that the vicarious thrill afforded the stricken might serve to miraculously cure him. The inhabitants of the remote Scottish island on which the pair reside soon turn on her - first the church, then her mother, then the entire...

Possibly the most poignant film ever

Advantages: The whole cast is perfect; camerawork awesome
Disadvantages: ???

...Having been forced to see this as part of my journalism course, my first impressions were that it would be horrifically dire. Particularly as Bjork is the lead actress, I singer I (used to!) hate with a passion. How wrong I was. Lars von Trier, the director, is (in)famous for his 1998 film The Idiots, which many considered mocking in its vision of Danish disabled; here, he has given the perfect response. Bjork, in her role as a Czech immigrant in the US going blind and trying to stop her son suffering the same fate, is completely compelling, and deserves the Best Actress award she won at Cannes. The camerawork too is fascinating - part Blair Witch, part seasick, always faultless. It's a superb, wonderful movie, but make sure you take a box of tissues with you; even the hardest of souls will find it hard not to shed a tear at the sheer...

Relegated by Xmas

Advantages: they play some games at home
Disadvantages: not good enough by a long way

...No hopers, Ipswich Town - sorry and all that. But it has been proved in recent years that unless you can buy intelligently and possibly BIG, you will struggle. Ipswich came up to the Premier at the end of last season after several seasons of knocking on the door. Good luck to them - they deserve their season with the 'big boys' - BUT and it's a big but, they don't really have a chance. Watford showed last year the gulf between the Premiership big guns and the Division one triers. The Hornets started ok, but suffered thereafter. If Ipswich get off to a half decent start they may stave off the inevitable for a while - but otherwise 'mother, is the turkey ready yet - Ipswich are relegated. They will have the comfort of making a few £million from the Sky deal and the big home games against Man U, Arsenal, Liverpool etc....but staying up...

Chaos reigns!

Advantages: See review

...ANTICHRIST Intro Lars von Trier, director of Antichrist, has certainly caused a few eyebrows to be raised in the cinematic world. The self-proclaimed best director in the world is renowned by some as a genius, and a pretentious idiot by others. With his latest, and arguably most publicized film yet, von Trier was about to cause controversy and outrage, but also deliver an exciting film with a masterpiece of visual imagery. Before we get started however, it's important to understand it's controversial for a reason. Viewers who are offended easily should know that it contains several scenes of very unsubtle graphic sex. And yes, the rumors are true, there are also some scenes of extreme genital mutilation, which is also shown in it's entirety. You have been warned. The Sun called it 'torture porn' and 'too unpleasant to gratify...

A rainbow of colours.....that dry!

Advantages: The glue becomes part of the picture.
Disadvantages: Does go mouldy, eventually!

...sticks are advertised a new product, the idea behind them is that not only do they glue things together, though this is a paper glue so of course restrictions apply, but the colour stays even after the glue dries, meaning that the glue can now be part of the masterpiece! As with the original sticks these are toxic free meaning that they are safe to be used by the slightly younger child, though it is always advisable to not let them sit there and suck it! These are also washable, though as the glue comes in a solid form it is reasonably hard to get it all over you and your clothes, though my kids do give it a good go?.they are triers I will give them that! Each tube, and there are two in a pack, are a different colour and contain 20g of solid glue stick. The particular ones in this pack are red and green, but there is another pack that...
