Trinidad is nice, Tobago is Paradise

Advantages: paradise on earth
Disadvantages: very hilly and a bit out of the way for party goers

...When I decided to go to Tobago, I definitely didn't want to do the usual package trip to the Caribbean. I managed to find a cheap flight with British Caledonian (the later you book, the cheaper it is) and booked a room in a private bed and breakfast via the internet in the sleepy fishing village of Speyside. The whole thing was much cheaper than a package trip and the B&B I stayed at was really warm and friendly. (For those interested here is the link to the site www.caribinfo.com/countryhaven/ ). Speyside was well off the beaten tourist track and most of the non-locals were there to dive as this part of the coast has some of the best diving and snorkelling waters in Tobago. Speyside was also much hillier than the flatter, more touristy, Pigeon Point - so not necessarily for those who have problems walking. From the B&B, the views...

Scuba Diving in Tobago

Advantages: Fantastic unspoilt reefs
Disadvantages: Need a car to get around

...a bit to fill our afternoons. Practical stuff - thin wetsuits or shorties - it's warm warm warm. They say you shouldn't wear gloves but you can - some descents are down ropes so you may want to protect your hands. On the downside - yes, it's a long way On the upside - cheap destination with lots of good offers (I think we paid about £529 plus diving - outstanding reefs, good food and drink. A couple of points. It's not Trinidad - if you read or hear bad things about Trinidad, don't assume they apply to Tobago. It's a much quieter, gentler place. There are no direct flights from the US to Tobago - that means that it's NOT full of American divers. This isn't intended as a prejudiced comment BUT bear in mind that wherever American's like to holiday, it tends to put the prices up. Their absence keeps the prices low for the rest...

Honeymoon in Tobago

...Introduction Tobago is a small island in the Caribbean near to Trinidad and the Venezuelan coast. We went for 2 weeks from the end of May, which is just about the start of the rainy season. Flight The flight from Gatwick to Tobago takes 8 hours or so, and going out the time difference does not have too much effect. We flew with JMC, who have since stopped flying direct to Tobago (see later). We got a price of 329 GBP per person return, which is pretty good for the caribbean. The flight was OK, though not as good as the return journey. Arriving at Crown Point airport was a surprise. The airport is very small, and we were the only major flight that day. ...You can do the deed much more quickly these days, get married that is. Not, it has to be said, with a 24-hour or 24-minute turnaround, such as Las Vegas, but then, who would have the good taste to go to tobago to be married and then expect to do it with such unseemly haste? I choose to get married in Tobago in September 2000. We spent three weeks in Tobago, choosing to get married in the middle of our holiday; it is a good idea to allow at least a week of romantic anticipation in Tobago first, and anyway you need to be a resident in the country for three full days (not including day of arrival) in order to qualify for a marriage license, and the paperwork will take another three days or so. ...Tobago ought to be kept a secret. Once you discover it you don't want to share it, but I'm going to anyway. Tourism is the island's main source of income, though you wouldn't know...I thought I was the only tourist there... This place has been left behind in a world obsessed with material things. Tobago people are genuinely nice to each other, the children are a joy - well mannered, shy and pretty. Even the road sweepers wish you a nice day - and mean it. Physical crime is literally unheard of in Tobago - unlike nearby Trinidad. Church is popular on sundays, - and the sabbath respected. You can't get petrol on sundays - everywhere closes - but then so what? The majority of beaches are untouched by man. No bars, hotels or jet skis. ...When people hear the word Caribbean, immediately pictures of women in grass skirts, white sandy beaches, cocomut trees and primitives with spears come to mind - this will be a very big surprise when it comes to visiting Trinidad. I was not aware that there was a section on this site dedicated to travel in general and came across several reviews of Tobago, but none of Trinidad. Geographically, Trinidad and Tobago are located at the southernmost end of the Caribbean chain of islands, just north of Venezuela. Great holiday at the Sol Trinidad

Advantages: Location, location, location

...We went on holiday to Majorca for 10 days in July and stayed at the Sol Trinidad hotel in Magaluf. We have been to Magaluf in the past and stayed at a Sol hotel which we really liked and so decided to give this one a go. We booked it off teletext and stayed half-board. The hotel has 375 rooms spread over 9 floors, we had a pool view room on the forth floor which was quite handy as the two (very small!) lifts were out of action a few times and I was grateful for only having to climb four flights of stairs. It is situated a 2 minute walk across the road to the beach, and the road along the front of the hotel has lots of shops (clothes, souvenirs, booze, fags etc) and the road behind mainly bars and BCM the major nightclub where Radio 1 were doing there live weekend while we were there. A previous host back in Havana had kindly made arrangements for a friend of his, another casa particular owner, to put us up in Trinidad and Pedro took us straight to his house on the edge of Trinidad?s quaint and colourful colonial old town, taking short cuts down narrow alleyways while we tried to remember landmarks. We were hungry, tired and somewhat taken aback by all the hustle and bustle going on around us. Pedro seemed to know everyone in Trinidad and shook hands with the men he met and pointed out things of interest along the short walk up the hill to the house he shares with his wife, Carmen.
