Those of you that have been sea fishing from a boat will know that Mackies can be a pain in the proverbial b*m when you are trying to get your rigs down to the sea bed where the decent fish are supposed to be. But you probably know that Mackerel make good bait for those self same (and in my case, ELUSIVE) big boys. Here is my tip for you: Catch the b*ggers, fillet them and freeze them. BEFORE YOU START CLICKING ON THE "WHAT A WASTE OF CIAO SPACE THIS IS" BUTTON, let me explain a bit more. Freezing mackies, or more accurately, THAWING mackies, makes them go mushy and difficult to keep on the hook. My recent experience at The Trout, Wolvercote

Advantages: Beautiful setting
Disadvantages: Dire food and service

...I previously visited The Trout years ago, possibly up to 7 years ago. No problems to speak of back then other than the queue for food and drink! My experience last week (a Wednesday evening-weekeday) means I will NEVER visit The Trout again. Very disappointing. 1. The queue is still ridiculous- 20-30 minutes wait. The car park was nearly full yet just 2 staff serving customers for food and drink. It is very boring to make your partner/friends wait at the table (which you'll need to do when if you can find one outside). 2. Food arrived quickly enough. But my dish (flatbread with mozarella/rocket) was totally bland, the rocket leaves completely limp. My friend had ordered Prawn Cocktail, this was also bland and clearly from a tin/jar. 3. The universal bait

Advantages: Can be used to catch virtually any freshwater fish, cheap to obtain
Disadvantages: Sticky fingers after handling them, can be awkward to get on the hook when they start wriggling.

...The Worm you find in your Garden (or Allotment, or whatever) is probably the most useful of all the basic baits available to the freshwater Angler. Many fish will take a worm - Trout, Perch, Gudgeon, Carp, Tench, Eels, Roach, Rudd, Ruffe, Salmon, you name it. They're a natural food source to fish, especially after heavy rain so I've read....... apparently they get washed out of the side of the River Bank or Lake side during the heavy rain, and end up doing an impersonation of Wile e. Coyote going into the water, where the fish eat them up. They are also relatively simple to obtain, you have a choice of waiting for them to come out onto the top of your lawn after it's been raining....... or you can have a dig around the soil covered parts (being careful not to damage any plants of course)..... though I sort of went off the idea...

Mussels are found plentiful on roacks either just below the mean highwater mark (a mark even on the small tides that is covered by water), orsheltered gullies. They are a soft bait and care should be taken when opening them because a knife is required and also the shell it self is very sharp when broken. Inside you will find a soft fleshy part and a harder tougher foot, this is the place to put the hook through (twice if you can).
