...Review of ?Troy? 2 Disc Special Edition DVD The DVD I am reviewing the 2 disc special edition of the DVD. The movie was produced in 2004 by Warner Bros. Pictures. The movie received mediocre praise from the critics for the retelling of Homer's ?The Iliad?. The storyline is fairly loosely based on The Iliad, and Hollywood has used it's artist license to add to the tale. The Special Edition consists of the 2 discs, one being the actual movie and the other a very interesting mixture of special effect techniques used in the production, an analysis of the battle scenes, a 3D animated guide to Greek myths and a look at the design of the sets used and the comparisons between Greek temples and ruins of the time. ...Troy was a breath-taking film with a brilliant plot (admittedly based on a legend), amazing characters and some amazing special effects. Story The story was well written and believable, however, it is based on a historical legend and is not the work of the makers of the film, so while I liked it, I can't give anybody credit for it. The story was also refreshing in that the good guys lost, which is original. 4/5 Characters/ performances This film had an amazing set of characters portrayed by some truly gifted actors such as Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom. There was a nice mix of brave, selfless heroes and some twisted villains. However, the film also impressed me in that it didn't see characters in black and white as many films do and there was good within evil and evil within good. There was also something to look...

...The story of Troy is a well known one and I think this is one of the better versions out there although by no means the best. The film opens with a few scenes of different characters in the movie as the narrator, who we later learn is Menelaus, tells that what is to follow are the true events surrounding the great Trojan war and the downfall of the mighty city of Troy. We then see a young Cassandra running to her parents King Priam played by John Rhys-Davies and Queen Hecuba played by Maryam D'Abo. The Queen has just given birth to a baby son who has been named Alexandros. However Cassandra warns them that this child will bring about the destruction of Troy unless they kill him. Advantages: Great story, excellent acting and effects
Disadvantages: some brutal battle scenes

...Brad Pitt stars in this film which for me was the deciding factor for buying the DVD. I had seen it before but never really took much notice of the storyline and after watching it again I have to say I was very impressed by it. The film is set back in the times with the Spartans and the Trojans taking up the country of Greece. The two nations are currently living in peace and getting on with their own lives. That is until Paris, a Trojan, falls for Helen of Sparta who is the King?s wife and she runs off with him back to Troy. The Spartan King is not happy with this and gets his army together to go and reclaim his wife. He has to use a lot of strength to persuade the army to fight as they will only do so if their best warrior will fight with them. Their best warrior being Achilles. Advantages: great film, brilliant special effects, sound acting
Disadvantages: feature split over 2 discs!, dodgy accents

...hand combat, everything sucks you in and the battles become wholly enjoyable and entertaining. Adding to this are the performances of some of the main characters. Eric Bana creates a true hero for a film that is full of legends. He succeeds at persuading the audience that all he does is for the honour and loyalty of both his family and his country. Bana's skill is mirrored on the Greek side by that of Cox. A big fan of what he has achieved in the past I can say I was not disappointed with his input into 'Troy'. Yet again he portrays the perfect bad guy who the audience just cant wait to come undone. Yet the performance of Pitt leaves much room for improvement, his performance is severely shadowed by that of Bana. He appears to be the token American hero in this Hollywood epic. Advantages: fantasic battle scenes and great to watch
Disadvantages: few bad choices and decisions made by the director

...This film has a certificate 15; this is because of the violence throughout the film and slight nudity. I don?t think that the nudity in it is too bad, but there is a lot of violence involved in the battles so the certificate rating was acceptable. It has a running time of 163 minutes, which is ok if you like fighting but I do think that too much was crammed into this amount of time. The film itself is a tale of love and war in ancient Greece; it came to the screen in all its grandeur in the epic-scale adventure. It is set in 1193 BC in Paris.
