...This is the first piece of work I have read which has been written by Jackie Kay, and i found that the plot and ideas in 'Trumpet' were so original that I would have no idea what to expect if i were to pick up another novel or poem of hers - I'm not sure if this is a good or a bad thing.. Firstly, a main summary of the novel itself . The plot is based on a famous saxophone player named Joss Moody, who has recently passed away, much to the grief of his wife and son. There is a major twist, though - Joss is not the person everyone thought he was. He was hiding a major secret about himself from the rest of the world (one which I won't reveal in my review). Yamaha Student trumpets

Advantages: Good quality and always reliably in tune.
Disadvantages: Cost a bit more than similar student trumpets.

Since about 1980, they have always had a student instrument priced between £250 and £300. The 2320 model was originally the only one in this price range. Tiny trumpet

Advantages: nice story, lovely pictures, teaches children about sharing
Disadvantages: Nothing I can think of

...This book is called "Tiny Trumpet" and is yet another book from the Practical Parenting range which aim to "be fun to share together, stimulate imagination, develop understanding through words and pictures and encourage an early love of books and learning". The RRP is £3.99. I purchased this book along with several others from the Book People in a Lucky Dip selection. I like to have a box of books available for presents to give to friends children. My first Trumpet... aaahhh.

Advantages: very cheap and good for beginners
Disadvantages: basic and not for the professional

...As you may have guessed from the title, my first trumpet was a YAMAHA which I bought some years ago now for a bargain price of £250. I think that the model I bought was the one below this one, but they are still very similar and fundamentally the same. This model comes with three valves... there's a surprise, and mobile 1st and 3rd valve slides. It is available in gold laquer as well as silver plating, but the silver plating will cost a little extra. These more basic models are easier to take care of and last longer as they are less fragile. The threaded guide on the 3rd valve slide on a vincent bach is REALLY annoying if it gets even slightly bent. Good beginners trumpet

Advantages: Well made, good sound, good case
Disadvantages: Some valves dodgy

...This trumpet is one I usually recommend for beginners. As with all Yamahas it is well made and produces a reasonably responsive sound. The trumpet looks good and the laquer does not wear off quickly as with some cheaper makes of trumpet. The valves are usually all right though I have had problems with some more recently bought instruments. The case provided is excellent being quite compact but having a useful sub compartment in which to carry music. The price is reasonable if bought mail order. It is certainly better value than some cheaper models which don't sound so good or last so long. It should also be easy to resell...

Disadvantages: hard to find in stores, can only be used on a Mac

By using a vga to Mac adaptor, I am able to put the images up on our pull down projection screen. The sound is played through the classroom stereo system. We started out learning about all of the instruments in the brass family. The students can see a great image of a trumpet and then click on the different parts of the trumpet to get even more information. For example, by clicking on the mouthpiece they learned about the different sizes of mouthpieces that are available for the trumpet and what effect they have on the sound that the trumpet makes. Great all round instrument

Advantages: Versatility - useful in classical and lead work, big sound, reliable
Disadvantages: 3rd valve spit valve awkward, bulky case

...This has been my main instrument for 5 years -not once regretted buying it. I use this trumpet for playing in orchestras as well as doing a lot of lead stuff, some solo work, and it seems to perform very well in all areas. I use a warburton mouthpiece (10* backbore 4D cup) so can't comment on the mouthpiece that came with the instrument. My spec: ML Bore with reverse lead pipe and size 43 bell. Response: One of the best things about this trumpet is its fast response in tonguing and running up and down the whole register. Playing you can really feel how the notes are going to come out and they do instantly as soon as you hit them, in contrast to small delays I've found with other makes. ...I thought I'd try out Avenged Sevenfold following the release of their latest album 'City of Evil'. After several months of pin up posters depicting the band riding motorbikes whilst holding various lead pipes and chains, endless articles in rock and metal magazines on the band's success, and A7x hoodies popping up everywhere in the town centres, I thought I'd give it a go and see what all the fuss was about. So how lucky I was when a mate gave me 'Sounding the Seventh Trumpet', saying that he 'didn't like the awful screaming'. Since that joyous moment I have bought their latest release also, and can safely say that 'Sounding the Seventh Trumpet' is much better. Firstly, this album boasts some fantastic song writing skills. Why I Love My Piano (although I'm a bit rubbish!)

Advantages: Relaxing, entertaining, a fantastic hobby that can enrich your life

...Did anyone see the report on the news last week about the increase in people taking up musical instruments since the credit crunch began? I was surprised by this, but when I thought about it a bit more it did make perfect sense. Playing an instrument can be very relaxing, satisfying and a great antidote to the stresses and strains of modern life. The initial cost of buying an instrument can be considerable, but once you have it, there it is, just waiting for you to make your beautiful music.
