...The Tsunami magazine. Well, to start off with, what an unfortunate name following the disaster in Asia last Christmas. Because of that, WHSmith have renamed these “Hanjie” – Japanese Picture Puzzles. Hanjie means ‘picture puzzles’ in Japanese, and that sums up what this is all about. The puzzle booklet is published once a month by WHSmith, and is available from most of their stores. The current price is £2.90, and for the hours of fun these can give you, it is worth every penny. It is the same general size as most puzzle books, and can be found on the puzzle shelf. Look for the chequerboard style cover, and of course, the title! Inside the front cover of the booklet is a list of full instructions, but to summarise, this is what you can find. Tsunami is the name given to a kind of pictorial logical puzzle that appear in magazine formats exclusive to WHSmith, which limits their availability somewhat, but not by much. Forget the regular “logic problems” whereby you just fill a grid in with ticks or crosses and reach a rather pointless conclusion, these create a sort-of satisfying outcome. They first appeared on these shores about 15 years ago, when they were called Nonagrams. The more modern name gives a hint to their Japanese origin. They were about the only reason to buy the Sunday Telegraph for a few years, as they featured a rather tough one every week as a competition. Eventually they published several volumes of them in those “pocket”-sized puzzle books that crosswords come in. You know, the kind that never fit any known pocket... Read review

...~ ~ I’ve lost count of the number of articles I’ve read in the past week or so in regard to the dreadful Asian earthquake and resulting tsunami that all seem to ask the same type of question. “Why did God allow this dreadful tragedy to happen?” “Where was a loving, caring and all-powerful God when the tsunami struck?” ~ ~ The first thing that strikes me as rather peculiar (or perhaps not!) is that the journalists and media people who are (mostly) writing these articles and posing these questions are usually the very same people who don’t give a toss about God or religion either in their own personal lives or in the lives or others. The secular, liberal journos and media hacks who never seem to miss ANY opportunity to carry out yet another round of “God bashing” every possible chance they get. Who have absolutely no personal... ...Here I am again on ciao. Long time no see and be gentle with me, I haven’t written for a while. I was as horrified as everyone else to see the natural disaster of the Asian earthquake Tsunami striking and destroying many countries and islands and wreaking the huge devastation that it caused. I was very emotionally upset at the loss of life and for the welfare of the people it affected as everyone else was. I was very aware and admit, was amazed at the distance this wave travelled and how much devastation it actually caused. It took me some time to sit and reflect what all this meant as the usual media frenzy of public emotion unfolded and was jammed in my face as well as yours. Day after day, bloated dead bodies, homeless tearful children, wrecked buildings, devastated countryside, and ruined lives dictated our television... Read review
