...In June my family were lucky enough to have the opportunity to spend a few months in the beautiful western United States. Our trip started in Phoenix and ended in Alberta, Canada. Our first week was spent in a rented home in Tucson. So now sit back and let me give you a taste of this wonderful, friendly city and some of the delights that are within a days drive. Getting there. ************* Flying to Tucson is not cheap! Although it is possible to fly to Tucson, a change in Phoenix is necessary .As it is only about a 2 hour drive from Phoenix to Tucson, we decided to fly to phoenix, stay the night and then pick up a hire car and drive to Tucson the next day I did a lot of price checking prior to booking and found the cheapest flight was with B.A.We had a large number of air miles so were able to use these in part payment...

Review of Tucson (Arizona)

Lazy K - enjoyable stay

Advantages: Friendly, good food and riding
Disadvantages: A long way from England

.... With only 20 or so rooms, the ranch is small enough to be personal. What about the riding? This too, was excellent. The ranch has a variety of horses, all in good condition, and you are matched with a horse to suit your riding ability. During your stay, you can keep the same horse, or select a different one. Needless to say, you do become attached to them, and are reluctant to swap. The setting of the ranch is idylic, set amongst the desert of Tucson. The riding is varied - high rides up the mountains, or loping (a fast canter to us British) in the desert. And, once a week, there is a ride out to the local bar - perfect! The ranch has the usual ameneties, including a swimming pool, and some unexpected, including a friendly donkey, which we named Ey-ore. I recommend that you book direct - they have a web site....

Review of Tucson (Arizona)

Excellent Place to stay for 2 or 3 days

Advantages: Quieter than Phoenix but just as good
Disadvantages:

...I've been to Tucson now on 3 or 4 occassions and genuinely believe it is overlooked by many a tourist from the UK. Places to Visit ; Tombestone :- An hour or so drive brings you to the town where the wild wild west was fought. Where the Gunfight at the OK Coral was won. Where boothill is. Sonoran Desert Museum :- Wild animals in natural surroundings. Only $8 for a good half day. Excellent , our 2 year old son loved it here. Sabino Canyon :- Walk through a Canyon formed over Millions of years. $5 for a 4 Mile Walk and a 4 Mile Tram ride. Places to Eat ; Pinnacle Peak :- Just as in Phoenix , the wild wild west comes alive at this Cowboy Steak House. Gunfights galore. Massive Steaks at excellent prices. Places to Shop ; Hundres of traditional Indian Shops for that special gift or souvenir....

Utility Not Sporty......

Advantages: Budget Korean version of a practical utility vehicle
Disadvantages: Pain to park, not particularly good fuel consumption

...I have no intention to drive off a proper metalled road (at least not deliberately), nor do I indulge in the daily school run with hordes of kids, bags, PE kit and the like. However when we changed the car last May we did decide to buy a 4x4 Hyundai Tucson (pronounced Toooson) 2.0 CRTD CDX. Curiously the manufacturer describes this as a Sports Utility Vehicle or SUV. Now my image of a sports vehicle is low slung, cramped, goes like mad, makes heads turn; so certainly not like this chunky beast. Best described as large 5 door hatchback, it is a budget offering from Korea. Indeed the Kia Sportage shares the same Corporate ownership, running gear, many panels and fundamental designs as this one. Review of Hyundai Tucson 2.0 CRTD 4WD

Good Value for money 4x4

...I bought a Hyundai Tucson 2 weeks ago and have found it very good value for money. I've got the 2.0 CRTD CDX version and it is packed with features. Inside, there are heated front seats, cup holders front and rear, and loads of little handy storage pockets. It even has an under-seat storage tray under the front passenger seat. The music system is an RDS/CD player. There's also a very easy to use climate control which allows you to set the inside temperature and then just concentrate on your driving. The standard equipment also includes electric tilt slide sunroof/mirrors/windows, front fog lamps, cruise control, 6 spoke alloys (with alloy spare), auto-dimming rear-view mirror and compass. The little touch which I felt nice was, in the boot, a luggage net is included stopping your suitcases rolling around. As an optional extra...

...and made sure it was compressed into the smallest possible size. This is important as the cost is by weight and size. With DHL if the item is not boxed you will also be charged a further £2. I didn't mind this as tightly wrapped in plastic was the best way. Just over £30 was the charge for this which was the most competitive price cutting over £12 off the Post Office surface mail charge which would have taken 8 weeks not 5-7 days as I was quoted with DHL. We booked the delivery over the internet which was simple and straightforward and printed off the paperwork. The driver came to collect the parcel at three in the afternoon last Wednesday 17th December. It was wrapped and bound for Tucson which is in Arizona a few miles north of the Mexican border where he lives on the edge of the desert. My heart skipped a few beats as it left us because...

Gunfight at the OK Coral

Advantages: A genuine Cowboy Day
Disadvantages: A little remote

...The late 1800's was a difficult time in the American West , outlaws prevailed , gunfights the norm. We've all heard of the Gunfight at the OK Coral but dare we inagine it was real - I can assure you it was. I've seen it - well I've seen a reconstruction of it , fought out daily in Tombestone Arizona (where it actually happened). About 60 miles south east of Tucson you arive in a classic cowboy town , a few short streets of wooden buildings - tacky I here you say. Could easily have been so but actually no. Just outside of the town is Boothill Cemetary where all the famour named Outlaws are buried. Western Shops abound but not as expected at sky high prices - ripping the customers off. The prices are actually better than in the main towns and shopping centres so you can pick up at very reasonable prices the likes of leather...

...In the summer of 2003 our family spend 2 months travelling from Tucson, Arizona to Alberta in Canada. Our first week was spent staying in a rented house in Tucson and it was from here that we visited Tombstone. What?s so special about Tombstone? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tombstone is most famous as the town where the gunfight at the o.k. Corral took place more than a century ago. Wyatt Earp, his brothers and friends took on the outlaws Clanton and his 2 supporters. The gunfight left several of the men dead and ensured that Tombstone found its way into the history books and onto many tourists lists of must see places! Tombstone started life as a boomtown in 1877 when silver was discovered in the area. At the time this area was Apache land and there were many fierce battles as the Apache fought to preserve their homeland...

You look so rich! I mean, great!

Advantages: Feel-good, fluffy, sweet!
Disadvantages: A bit dated

...Romy and Michele's High School Reunion is my all-time favourite film. It's a fluffy, feel-good film that is guaranteed to have you laughing, no matter how many times you've seen it before! It's very American and a little dated (it was released in 1996) but still fabulous! The storyline revolves around Romy White and Michele Weinberger, two dumb, ditzy American blondes. They are played by Mira Sorvino the Oscar-winning star of Mighty Aphoridte and ex-girlfriend of Oliver Martinez, otherwise known as Kylie's boyfriend, and Lisa Kudrow, who of course is Phoebe Buffay in Friends! When Romy and Michele hear their old high school back in Tucson, Arizona are having a reunion, they jump at the chance. After all, this is their big chance to show their bitchy ex-classmates how fantastic their lives now are. They are now slim, pretty blondes...

..., you will never have seen an eating place like this before. Don't wear a tie , they will cut it off and keep it as their prize. 2lb of Steak for about $15. Cowboys all around , Gunfights , need I say more. Places to Shop ; Scottsdale :- A couple of huge shopping malls , the size of Merry Hill , Metro Centre to give you a flavour. Arizona Mills :- Outlet Centre. The size of which I have only seen in Las Vegas (Belz Outlet Centre). Excellent heavily discounted shopping. Places to Stay ; Too many to mention , from cheapies to mega resorts in Scottsdale. Go on , next time you visit California or Nevada , visit Phoenix and Tucson (see note on that City also)...
