Advantages: Friendly cabin crew, comfortable planes, good offers Disadvantages: Limited flights from UK
...TUI Fly are a German-based airline that sells package holidays as well as flights only. They have high street branches in Germany and Austria (and a few in Slovenia I've noticed) but they have a prominent presence on the web and it was after being bombarded by promotional e-mails from the airline that I finally booked a flight with TUI Fly.
TUI Fly is not a budget airline but does have regular promotions that bring the prices in line with the likes of Easyjet and Ryanair. When the flights are not on offer the prices do tend to come close to, say, British Airways or Lufthansa. Earlier this year we paid around £60 each for a return flight from Newcastle to Hannover, the bulk of which was taxes.
The good news about TUI Fly is that they don't charge you for lots of hidden extras like hold luggage, desk check-in or seat allocation...

Review of TUI Fly Airline
Advantages: Good Prices Disadvantages: Only Book Direct
...I would receommend Portalnd Holidays Direct to anyone who doesnt mind booking their holiday direct and anyone who likes a Thomson holiday as Portland is part of the Thomson/Tui group - so your getting the same as you would get travelling with Thomson.
How to book
-----------------
You can only book by telephone or internet.
If you book online on the internet they normally give online discounts - look out for special online booking offers.
Their website is completley secure so you can feel safe using your credit/debit card to pay. If you pay a deposit you can pay additional amounts by telephone to their dedicated after sales team.
If you book by telephone there is a dedicated call centre waiting to take your call - in my experiences they have always been really friendly and helpful and give honest opinions.
I have never...

Review of Portland Direct
Advantages: pre-booked seats Disadvantages: very little legroom
...Thomsonfly (not thompsonfly as the name of this category suggests), formerly Britannia Airways, is the charter airline of the Thomson travel agent (formerly Lunn Poly) and the Thomson Holidays tour operator, all of which are owned by parent company TUI, the german mega-company.
I have only been on one pair of Thomsonfly flights, and this was only due to me leaving the booking to the last minute, and that being the cheapest available option - I wouldn't have gone with Thomson given a totally free choice, as I did a piece of A level economics coursework about this market, and discovered that Thomson and the other three big operators are rated the worst for customer satisfaction.
However, I was reasonably impressed with them. They sent the tickets through fairly quickly, they came printed in a book with a whole host of information...

Review of Thompsonfly
Advantages: Execellent position next to bus station and close to shops, just far enough away from night life to be quiet. Disadvantages: The food is excellent so you may over eat ! Not very close to beach.
...I visited this hotel a couple of years ago as the second week of a cruise and stay with TUI.
This is a modern hotel with a lift we had a very pleasant room and balcony over looking the front and street but not too noisey. We were half board and we really could not fault the food in anyway, lots of choice hot/cold self service buffet style with daily specials. as much as you could eat. Even though it seemed busy the tables were cleared quickly and meal time was a pleasure.
We went in March and there were not many children there but the ones that were did'nt seem to be at our end of the Hotel.
The garden and pool area was very well planned out even though it appears to be right next to a busy road it is not over looked at all. When having a day by the pool we found a quiet corner and nabbed our chairs before breakfast because as...
Advantages: clean planes, friendly staff, fast check-in, extra baggage allowance Disadvantages: not having the veg meal that was asked for this year
...dark blue and white stripes. The Britannia head has now been replaced by Thompsons TUI sign.
I would recommend flying with Britannia (Thompsonfly) to anyone....
Advantages: Clean , good facilities , well layed out ,all mod cons , good duty free Disadvantages: Not such a good departure lounge , too many using the airport at once
...travelling under the runway . Fascinating .
Now although large aircraft are able to land here most of the time , at certain times during the winter this airport still has to be closed to them . The high winds and storms which can attack the island can mean it is closed at short notice . This can result in flights being diverted to Porto Santo , The Canary Islands or even Lisbon . This usually happens in January or February .
Most travel companies now have direct flights to Funchal airport on Madeira . We flew with TUI from Manchester on a boeing .
We landed about 7.30am , in September to a calm , humid but cloudy morning . Disembarking from the plane and looking round I was struck immediately by how modern and well kept this airport is .
A coach took us from the runway to the airport buildings . On entering you are greeted by...

Review of Funchal Airport (FNC)
Advantages: I beleive they are still the best at what they do. Disadvantages: Can be expensive
...Again I will start this review by saying that I am employed by TUI UK the company who own Thomson holidays.
I was originally employed by the Thomson Travel Group, the company was the taken over and has now evolved to become part of the world of TUI, the largest tourism company in the world (so I am told).
The actual idea behind the world of TUI concept is actually very good. They aim to be present at every stage in the customer holiday from where they book, who they fly with, where they stay and every other step in the package holiday process. Therefore the plan is you book your holiday in Lunn Poly, you fly with Britannia airways (soon to become Thomson airways) and they you stay in one of the many hotel chains which the company operates. It has actually got to the point where no matter where you go you can't escape the TUI...

Review of Thomson Holidays
Advantages: Milka...Lindt...chocolate in general Disadvantages: cable car shut in winter
...We went to Cologne this December so I could practice my German, we could go to the Christmas markets and we could take some much needed time off work. Actually, scrap that. Those were the reasons we went to Germany. The single reason we went to Cologne in particular was the flight schedules - Tui now fly there from Manchester, and our flights cost less than £70 return including taxes and the credit card fee (alarmingly charged per passenger, not per transaction).
I had been to Cologne before, but not since 1991, which is a decent chunk of my life ago. My companion had never been there, nor anywhere else in Germany for that matter. We booked in September, and had been annoying our mutual colleagues ever since, with tales of the heavily-chocolate-infused fun we were going to have. Now everywhere in Germany has fabulous chocolate, but...

Review of Cologne (Germany)
Advantages: Lots to see and do, great public art, good value Disadvantages: I didn't stay long enough
...Although I am enthusiastic recycler and cyclist, I will be the first to admit that I contribute to more than my fare share of airplane emissions. I know I should unsubscribe to all the airline mailing lists that land in my inbox but I just can't find the willpower to do that. Every time a new one arrives I have to click through to find out what bargains I might be missing and this is how we found ourselves booking flights to the city of Hannover with the German airline TUI fly.
Digging out the Lonely Planet guide to Germany I wasn't much enlightened - lots of concrete, some fine museums, beautiful and historic gardens. Hannover was heavily bombed during World War Two and, although the centre is dominated by a post-war concrete shopping centre, a section of the Old Town as well as some of the most interesting and attractive public...

Review of Hannover (Germany)
Advantages: Lots of wide open spaces and great target practise! Disadvantages: Can get quite cold so remember to take a woolly jumper.
..., ‘Man! – not another bl**dy rabbit!’.
Still – it’s the clean fresh country air that gets me every time – it’s like stepping into an oxygen tank!
From Otago & Southland, drive up and visit the Manapouri Power Station, (it stinks like rotten eggs) then you’re ready for Fiordland – one of the most untouched places of the world.
(Word of warning – do not leave ANYTHING lying around for the Keas, a very michievious and cunning bird and take lots of insect repellant! You might even catch a glimpse of another New Zealand bird called the 'Tui'.. pronounced 'Toooeeee')
I’ve just got my map out, and the rabbit thing is little bit further up. However, if you do fancy a bit of shooting (namely Opposums), I’m sure some nice farmer will let you go out with them. This is a night...
