...I first heard of T.U.K shoes when I saw a pair in a shop somewhere. Thinking they were unusual and not massively overpriced, I was sorry I hadn't bought them. When I got home I looked them up on the internet and found my shoes, along with some more 'different' shoes. T.U.K shoes are best describes as, I suppose Emo/goth. Think platforms, buckles and Emily The Strange and you are halfway there. Although saying that, I am not an Emo but I do like something a bit different. This website only deals with shoes, although it has links to other websites which sell clothing and accessories. Hutongs of Beijing

Advantages: Beautiful buildings and a look at life for many ordinary citizens of Beijing

...is simply to take a walk around them on foot as some of the best parts are so small that even a tuk-tuk would struggle to get in. It is also possible to do a range of tours in tuk-tuks, on bikes and on foot-these have the advantage that you will have a guide and they can take you directly to the 'best' parts, such as the most ornate and carved buildings and the best preserved areas. As the alleys are so winding and can start to look the same, a guide will also prevent you getting lost which is easy to do. However, I still recommend going without a tour as they tend to focus on certain areas that present a set image of China and sometimes in their effort to see the top areas they miss some of the beautiful run-down and real areas. By talking to someone who has been on a tour or knows the hutongs you could find out the commonly visited areas...

A city unlike anywhere else in the world

Advantages: A crazy and diverse place, lots of things going on, great atmosphere
Disadvantages: Lots of traffic pollution, very busy

...Bangkok is a complete mayhem of a city and the hustle and bustle of the place is just mad. You will never find another place quite like it. Everywhere you go there are taxis and tuk tuks speeding past you, market stalls along the streets, people trying to lure you into shops and bars, and hot food steaming from food carts in the roads. The amount of things going on never ceased to amaze me and for a first timer, it can be a very daunting. Bangkok was the last stop on mine and my husband's 5 week trip to Thailand, and I'm glad it was last as we just wouldn't have known what to do with ourselves if it had been our first stop. As soon as we arrived in the capital city, we realised it was, both literally and figuratively, miles away from the relaxed and quiet beaches of Koh Samui and Koh Tao. Star Inn - Chiang Mai

Advantages: quiet location, good rooms, centrally located

...I paid 800 baht a night which included a buffet style breakfast. But I later discovered that I had made a mistake as I had booked the acomodation through the official tourist agent of thailand at Bangkok railway station. I would have got a better rate booking it myself by just turning up. The hotel itself is nice, situated down a lane of one of the main central roads ( Loi Kroh Road ). This means it is in walking distance of the main attractions but quiet as well. The railway staion is only within walking distance if you have no luggage. Otherwise it is a 5 minute and 40baht tuk tuk ride away. The rooms are quite spacious and well laid out. They are also clean and well maintained. The rooms have a mini bar with a fridge, cable tv, shower, bath etc. But depending on which room you get all the view you may have is of the main...

Personally my favourite place to be in Asia, if not the world!

Advantages: Friendliest city you'll ever go to, amazing food, beautiful scenary, plenty to do..
Disadvantages: None I can think of other than you will be unable to leave and your initinery will become void!

.... The monks often approach tourists to chat to them about there life in Lao and to practice there English! Everyone is extremely friendly, there are smiles everywhere you look. There is just something about LP that insantly brings a smile to your face. You will probably extend your stay. Other than the temples, fanastic little resturants and bars, the surrounding area is dotted with beautiful waterfalls and villages that are only an hour away by tuk tuk. Treks can be arranged from one of the many travel agencies in town to hill tribe villages and there is opportunity for Kiyaking trips and elephant riding. Shopaholics will adore the night market that opens at sunset every evening until about 10pm, full of wonderful art, crafts, jewellery, clothes and just about everything inbetween! Wat Phnom is a fantastic place to climb for a sunset view...

Disadvantages: Not right in centre so may not be suited for some

...to the main market, the hotel ran a shuttle bus service. You could easily arrange to see sights from this hotel so even though not nearby to them it isn't inconvenient to get to them. This is the same case for getting to any nightlife to as again you can take the hotel's shuttle and if you miss the last one back a tuk tuk or taxi is cheap enough to get....

PHNOM PENH: still recovering from the past

Advantages: Really cheap, beautiful areas around the Independence Monument, lots of markets!
Disadvantages: Most the attractions are about death/Khmer Rouge

...Ah.. Sweet Phnom Penh! I knew the second I arrived here that I would love it. I arrived from Battambang by bus, and took a tuk tuk straight to Okay Guesthouse. I never expected the capital city of such a poor country to be so green and interesting. When you first arrive in Phnom Penh, you'll be harassed by moto/tuk tuk drivers. At first it might annoy you, but you have to understand that they live in an extremely poor, corrupt country. Many of the drivers actually come from outside the capital in search of a good income to send back to their families. They will always offer a price that's probably a third to a double of what you should really be paying. Don't worry too much about being ripped off, it really only will be be a dollar or so- how long does it take for you to earn $1 over here?! Tuk tuks are always more expensive than motos...

...The 'plain of jars' is one of the must sees in Asia - similar to Stonehenge and the figures on the Easter Island nobody knows the origins of these small to big stone jars. They are located close to Phonsavan in the north-east of Laos close to the vietnamese border. Phonsavan is easily accessible from all major cities. You can go by local bus or by minibus - Local bus from Luang Prabang was 50000kip and the minibus was 85000kip. There are 3 jar-sites whereby Site was is the most easily reachable. You have 3 ways to visit the sites: - by tour: every GH will offer you tours. Expect to pay 80000 for Site 1 and 150000 for all 3 Sites. I found that the tour was overly rushed and you didn't have enough time to see this impressive place. - go with a TukTuk: Find a TukTuk driver to take you. It will be a lot cheaper than with the tour and you...

I was travelling from the UK alone and was being collected at the airport, but wanted to stay for a few days in Bangkok before moving down to my new home in Hua Hin. Location The hotel is located on the very busy Koh San Road in Bangkok, which is a haven for travellers from all over the world and aptly nicknamed "the centre of the backpacking universe". The street is actually heaving all day and well into the night with stalls, tuk tuks and bars. It?s towards the top of the street and you are likely to get dropped on in your taxi at this end if you?re travelling from the airport. The road is approximately 1km long which only spans a couple of blocks but is home to countless budget guesthouses...
