Reviews of turmeric
World of Turmeric
Review of Turmeric by
mumno1
Advantages: can be used in cooking, health and medicinal purposes
Disadvantages: can stain skin and clothes
...If I were to say the word 'turmeric' what would be the first thing that came to mind?
It is a spice?
It is used in everyday cooking all over the world?
It is yellow in colour?
It is fragrant?
It can leave stubborn stains on skin, clothing etc?
But did you know that it has been widely used around the world for medicinal purposes, especially in India, as an Ayurvedic medicine. It is a spice that it readily available, in most Asian households it is always in the cupboard for cooking purposes so is always to hand. Yes, it can stain but this can be washed off your skin with some soap and some detergent if your clothes are stained.
Turmeric is from a plant called Curuma Longa. The plant forms large hard bulbs, these are grinded to obtain the powder. It is grown in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh including China. Although India...

The Winner in Supermarket Curries
Review of sainsburys rich and creamy indian meal for two by
mrsmopples
Advantages: Easy to cook , everything in one box, great with wine.
Disadvantages: Laden with calories and quite greasy in parts, dishes cannot be recycled.
...are 40 % chicken breast, vegetable oil, ginger, garlic, coconut milk, and yoghurt. The Korma is higher in calories, coming in at 355 cals per half tray and 24.2 g fat, ouch!
The butter chicken is also 40% chicken breast, coriander, tomato puree, paprika, turmeric, single cream and butter. Half of the tray equals 271 calories/ 16 g fat.
Pilau Rice
The rice comes in plastic tub with a sealed lid. The colours are purple and lilac and the tub is 4 inches long and weighs 500g. The three colours of the rice are orange, red and pink. The rice used is basmati, flavoured with cardamom, cloves, turmeric and cloves.
To cook, heat a small drop of oil in a pan and stir-fry for about 5 minutes on a low heat. The orange segments of the rice turn to a caramelised texture and the colour changes to a dark gold. You must stir the pan continuous...

...Curry, the South East Asia way
The curry from South East Asia is slightly different from the traditional Indian curry. Similar to Thai red curry, it uses mainly fresh ingredients and coconut milk.
The main ingredients used are turmeric, galangal, shallots, fresh chillies, candle nut and lemon grass.
Turmeric- part of the ginger family, turmeric is used to produce the vibrant yellow spice in curries.
Galangal -It is a rhizome with culinary and medicinal uses. It is part of the ginger family and it tastes little like ginger, though it has a stronger taste. In its raw form, galangal has a soapy, earthy aroma and a pine-like flavor with a faint hint of citrus.
Shallots - Shallots are like onions but it has a milder flavour. It can be used in the same manner as onions.
Candle nut -The candle nut is similar in flavor and texture...

Catering for Vegans
Review of Member Advice on Catering for Vegetarians by
racheldarcy
Advantages: yummy and healthy
Disadvantages: none
...turmeric
1 pinch chilli powder or cayenne pepper
vegetarian oxo cube
2 tablespoons olive oil
salt
pepper
Heat the olive oil and add all the spices and ginger and garlic (NOT the stock cube). Fry for a few minutes and then add the onion and cook until the onion is see through or starts to stick. Add the potatoes and mix well. As soon as it starts to stick add boiling water and simmer until the potatoes cook adding water if necessary. Once the potatoes are cooked add the stock cube. this will thicken the sauce. It is up to you how much water you add depending on how runny you want the sauce. At this point taste and add salt and pepper if necessary. Serve with rice or edley cooked in turmeric.

...but virgin or extra virgin will do)
10oz (284g) coconut oil (hard variety)
6oz (170g) palm oil (hard variety)
1/4 tsp Grapefruit seed extract OR vitamin E (optional preservative). Note... Grapefruit seed extract will speed up the time it takes for your soap to 'trace'.
NOTE: If using higher grades of olive oil it will usually take longer to reach a trace.
If adding colour and/or fragrance note the following...
Essential oil/s 20ml in this recipe size (avoid fragrance oils until you're more experienced)
Suitable and simple-to-use colorants... Ultramarines (any): Oxides (any): Lakes (any): Food-safe colours (sold as water soluble powders)...Tartrazine yellow: Sunset yellow (orange): Amaranth red: FCF blue (will turn crimson): many types of ground spices i.e. Turmeric: Paprika: Cinnamon.

We're cooking DAL tonight Folks!
Review of Everything that starts with D ... by
Connoisseur_Haggler
Advantages: authentic, fast & easy to cook, simple dish, inexpensive
Disadvantages: some ingredients may not be available in rural parts of the country
...a photo of the orange coloured lentils (masoor dal) so you can identify it in the shops. You’ll see it in the supermarkets perhaps in the lentils, spices section or near the soup section. I’d recommend you buy a small packet from a supermarket first. After you’ve mastered the taste and cooking I’d pop along to your nearest Indian shops and buy a 2KG or 5KG bag –it’s much, much cheaper and will last you for ages!
Right, before you get started in any Indian cooking you must have the right ingredients so here’s a basic list of things to store in your cupboard:-
chilli powder (red), haldi powder (turmeric –a yellow powder), dhania powder (coriander powder), zeera –whole (cumin seeds) and oil (for frying). Other ingredients you’ll need are fresh garlic (or pureed or powder garlic for emergencies), fresh ginger (optional), fresh green chillies...

Scrubbing in style?
Review of The Sanctuary Balinese Mande Rub by
wailywaily
Advantages: doesn´t seem to be very harsh on the skin
Disadvantages: concentrates on one area
...Well, continuing my comments on The Sanctuary products, let me comment on the Mande Susu Body Scrub.
I also got this as part of a pack with some points I had collected from a High Street shop, so I don´t really know how much it would cost for a normal size tub.
Regarding the packaging, it came in a tub, and despite having a protective lid with a tab plus a screw-top lid, the scrub had managed to leak out and made a mess of the inside of my bag. Not too happy about that, really.
The main ingredients are Ground Rice, Turmeric and Vitamin E to refresh and moisturise the skin. I don´t think it smells of Turmeric at all, it seems to have quite a sweet smell and the consistency of the gel is like a jelly. The rice and turmeric granules are not abrasive and feel fine on the skin, compared to salt scrubs I have tried before, which seem...

DON'T BE FOOLED BY THE 8p TRAP!!!!
Review of Tesco value chicken noodles by
karimkha
Advantages: None...and I mean none!!
Disadvantages: Taste horrible, lumpy...(everything really)!!
...important part of a good noodle dish, when the seasoning is good, the noodles are good!
Reading the contents of the sachet I found that it contained quite a lot of ingredients; Salt, Chicken Extract (1.6%), Sugar, Yeast Extract Powder, Onion Powder, Garlic Powder, Ginger Powder, Turmeric Powder, Stabiliser (Guar Gum), White Pepper, Coriander Powder and Wakame Pieces.
I thought it was a good sign having some spices because good noodles should have a good seasoning.
When I opened the sachet; I was disappointed, Again very little seasoning and although there was a nice scent coming over, garlic and onion extracts were dominating the whole thing, I couldn't detect a smell of chicken or any other spices like ginger but I waited until the noodles came to life!
Cooking the noodles
I used the traditional way the pan and hob. I...

Fancy a curry?
Review of Sainsbury Be Good to Yourself Indian Meal for One by
Zoe_South
Advantages: All the taste of the Takeaway
Disadvantages: Minor vegetable quibbles
...I don’t often write product ops, but I had a real treat for lunch the other day, and would like to share it with everyone, in the nicest possible sense, of course!
I’m watching my weight at present, and anything that can help me continue to eat like a horse and stick to my steady 1 to 2lbs off a week is a definite bonus. I’m very fond of curry, and on my weekly stagger round Sainsburys the other evening, was immediately attracted by the Be Good To Yourself Indian Meal for One. I’m not often in the market for single portion meals, but my veggie partner is on Jury Service at present, so this had Tomorrow's Lunch written all over it.
WHAT’S IN IT?
Three microwave dishes containing chicken tikka masala, in a sauce containing coriander, ginger, and turmeric; vegetable jalfrezi, mixed vegetables in a spicy tomato sauce with red...
