Minority Report - Single Disc Edition [2002] [DVD]
Full of morally flawed characters, and shot in grainy desaturated colours, Steven Spielberg's Minority Report is futuristic film noir with a far-fetched B-movie...... more
Full of morally flawed characters, and shot in grainy desaturated colours, Steven Spielberg's Minority Report is futuristic film noir with a far-fetched B-movie plot that's so feverishly presented the audience never gets a chance to ponder its many improbabilities. Based on a short story by Philip K Dick, the film is set in the Orwellian near-future of 2054, where a trio of genetically modified "pre-cogs" warn of murders before they happen. In an SF twist on the classic Hitchcockian wrong-man scenario, Detective John Anderton (Tom Cruise) is the zealous precrime cop who is himself revealed as a future killer. Plot twists and red herrings drive the action forward, and complications abound, not least Anderton's crippling emotional state, his drug habit, his avuncular-yet-sinister boss (Max Von Sydow) and the ambitious FBI agent Witwer (Colin Farrell) snapping at his heels. Though the film toys with the notion of free will in a deterministic universe, this is not so much a movie of grand ideas as forward-looking ones. Its depiction of a near-future filled with personalised advertising and intrusive security devices that relentlessly violate the right of anonymity is disturbingly believable. Ultimately, though, it's a chase movie and the innovative set-piece sequences reveal Spielberg's flair for staging action. As with A.I. before it, there's a nagging feeling that the all-too-neat resolution is a Spielbergian touch too far: the movie could satisfactorily have ended several minutes earlier. Although this is superior SF from one of Hollywood's greatest craftsmen, it would have been more in the spirit of Philip K Dick to leave a few tantalisingly untidy plot threads dangling. --Mark Walker ... less

Oxford Diecast Bertram Mills Circus Tricycle Van 1:76 Scale Diecast Model with clear presentation box and removable plastic plinth. Part of the Oxford Diecast Railway Scale range. Manufacturers Description:An addition to the Oxford range of Showtime models is this unusual Tricycle Van which was a common sight on the roads of Britain from the 1930s right through to the 1950s. This model appears in the livery of Bertram Mills Circus who used a very similar van to transport their Tannoy Sound Equipment. Decorated in their red and green colour scheme, with contrasting light coloured roof, the model has contrasting black chassis, wheels and interior - including the steering wheel. Registered AGH 96, the sides are printed in yellow with the Bertram Mills name, advertising what the van was carrying. The model would be very much in keeping on a layout of the 1930s - 1950s period. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS ITEM IS NOT INTENDED TO BE A TOY, THIS ITEM IS FOR COLLECTORS. MINIMUM AGE RECOMMENDED 14. ... less

False Advertising?
Advantages: taste nice
Disadvantages: high sugar content, high colourings, high flavourings
...Proctor and Gamble the makers of Sunny Delight advertise it as a healthy alternative to the usual soft drinks which children buy. They claim it has added vitamins and is therefore good for children and depict advertisements showing kids turning down coke etc. in favour of their product.
However this is all a complete sham! Sunny Delight is little more than water with a ridiculously high sugar...

Advantages: 3 for the price of one!
Disadvantages: Have to make own toy! Use of American Ads in UK
...Kinder Surprise Advert
The only Kinder Surprise Advert that has stayed in my mind is the one with the mum going out shopping and saying to her two children 'Do you want me to get you anything?' of course they do, and they ask for 'Chocolate' and a 'Surprise' and a 'Toy', what greedy children they are!
Mum of course is very lucky and stumbles across the wonders of the Kinder Surprise Egg...

Advantages: Raises money for an excellent cause
Disadvantages: Unethical? Bad timing prior to watershed
...I'm a firm supporter of the NSPCC, please dont get me wrong but I have got to speak up about the recent advertising campaigns they have been putting out on our TV's, especially one I saw at prime time - with child viewers still watching!
THE CHARITY:
Before going into detail about the adverts, I feel it important that I first provide you with some basic information about the charity itself...
