Mammoth Book of 20th Century Science Fiction
Review of Mammoth book of 20th Century Science Fiction Volume Two by
Martinscholes
Advantages: Some real gems
Disadvantages: Some dross
...The book, The Mammoth Book of 20th Century Science Fiction is edited by David G. Hartwell. It boasts on the front cover: that it is: "The biggest and best science Fiction Anthology Ever Published". And there, as they say, is the rub. Is it?
Although I acknowledge that there are a great many good science fiction stories in this anthology, I would have to argue against it being the best. And as for the biggest? Well, Asimov's Before the Golden Age (volumes 1 to 4) is a worthy contender for this title, I would have thought.
And the best? It cannot be. Why? Because as Hartwell states in the introduction: "I would like to acknowledge the significant presence of John W. Campbell, Isaac Asimov, Robert A. Heinlein and Arthur C. Clarke and all the other science fiction writers who are not reprinted in this book."
Therefore the correct...

Open University S103 Science Foundation Course
Review of Science by
karenl
Advantages: courses are well written
Disadvantages: you can be isolated
...and whether it is likely to exist anywhere else - a question that may very well be answered before the twenty-first century draws to a close.
Some of the subject matter is complex but it is all possible for somebody who has not studied science for several years. The course starts gently for the first half and then increases in difficulty but at a steady pace so you can improve your skills and be able to tackle the harder work....

Science can be fun!
Review of Science Museum (London) by
ts902
Advantages: Free, lots to see and do
Disadvantages: Can get busy
...: .
This floor probably has everything you expect from the traditional view of science: space rockets, enormous engines, and weird inventions from the 20th century.
The 'Energy Hall' never fails to impress with its collection of sturdy machines, one of which dates from the 18th century. The elegance of the Mill Engine (if engines can ever be elegant) is supported further by its sheer size. What is even more remarkable is that many of today's engines work using exactly the same mechanisms.
If you are after something a bit more out-of-this-world, then you can stroll a little further where you reach the 'Space' area. There are few places you can actually visit to see such items, but the Science museum has a handsome number of interesting space objects. Here you can view satellites, rockets, and space landers. Two space rockets are actually...

The London Science Museum
Review of Science Museum (London) by
mrsmopples
Advantages: Its free entry and your chilren learn as they play
Disadvantages: A nightmare to get to, very busy at peak times
...ride Simulator, On Air, Science in the 18th century.
Fourth Floor: Medical History
Fifth Floor: The Science and art of medicine and vetinary history.
~~ The Best Bits ~~
It is such a vast place to cover and I suggest a full day there to enjoy the whole experience. There are so many fascinating areas to see and the sections I enjoyed most are:
The Basement - "THE SECRET LIFE OF THE HOME".
How we used to live decades ago. There are original weaving machines; the first washing machine, the first oxo tin, many artefacts from the 1950's and even a self-administered Euthanasia Machine. This was last legally used in 1997 (not in this country). Incase you are wondering how it worked; the pump that administers the drugs is attached to a small laptop which gives the command to push the drugs intravenously into the patient...

The man who invented the 20th Century
Review of The Man Who Invented the 20th Century - Robert Lomas by
Lightstars
Advantages: A new piece of truth
Disadvantages: None
...of these last ones reappeared in Belgrade, in the last 2 decades. Belgrade museum, apparently, bought them from the US government.
I do not know if in Great Britain you knew from high school or university studies, but I did not have any information, here in Italy, on Tesla and the post he merited in the science history… Tesla ideated the alternating currents electrical systems and the hydroelectric power plants exist for his own merit, as the conduction of the electrical current to houses and firms. The previous direct electrical systems, “attributed to Edison”, were totally supplanted. In addition, Tesla, enlightening New York through the first plant at the Niagara Falls, won, from this point of view, his personal fight with Edison.
Another problem was born in those times: a contentious with the Italian Alessandro Marconi...

Gothic meets the twenty-second century
Review of The Rocky Horror Picture Show (Wide Screen) by
wulise
Advantages: Can be watched time and again.
Disadvantages: ME DANCING ALONG TO THE SONGS!
...One of my favourite films of all time has to be ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’. It is now nearly thirty years old and yet I find the issues it creates are as relevant today as they were in the early 1970’s. It is a stereotyped science fiction movie, portrayed in a format, which is very ‘tongue in cheek’. ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ combines comic humour with a classic Gothic horror story, Frankenstein: Gothic meets the twenty-second century! In a fifties sci-fi film genre.
**History**
‘The Rocky Horror Show’ was originally designated as a piece of experimental theatre in a small London Theatre. Richard O’Brien (Crystal Maze) created this play, the book, music and lyrics and Michael White produced the theatre production. It 'something any ten-year old could enjoy...

Twenty First Century Pong
Review of Rockstar Games presents Table Tennis (Xbox 360) by
rokhed00
Advantages: Fast addictive gameplay, great online multiplayer, photorealistic graphics
Disadvantages: Short single player game
...When Rockstar games announced they were developing for the Xbox 360 everyone expected their usual fare, a new Grand Theft Auto or Midnight Club, maybe a sequel to Manhunt, but definitely something urban and gritty. But what did we get, a game of ping pong. Everybody laughed at first, they thought it had to be some sort of joke, but now the games here, and believe me, it's no joke.
Rockstar may be new in the field of sports games, but they have really excelled with their first offering in the genre. Everything about the game is extremely polished, from the photo realistic graphics, perfect gameplay physics, and suitable sound effects to the simple uncluttered menus. This really is the perfect simulation of the sport.
Gameplay is easy to pick up with your analogue stick controlling your player and direction of shot and your controllers...

Theology as an every-day idea
Review of The Story of Christian Theology: Twenty Centuries of Tradition - Roger Olson by
frkurt
Advantages: Comprehensive, in-depth and well-written
Disadvantages: -
...that is only peripherally connected to 'real' Christianity. However, this volume tackles that assumption head-on, by showing the interconnectedness over time of Christian belief and practice with the theological developments and controversies of the times.
Just as theology impacts the church and society, so to do church and society impact theology. There is a dialectical relationship between the two which cause continuing development.
This book, 'The Story of Christian Theology: Twenty Centuries of Tradition and Reform', strives to be non-technical and 'non-threatening' in approach. Roger Olson, professor of theology at Bethel College in St. Paul, Minnesota, also serves as editor for Christian Scholar's Review, and has written other books, including Who needs Theology?. Olson therefore has experience in making the often-rarified field...

Science Museum? Read this first
Review of Science Museum (London) by
AllanG
Advantages: Educational and Fun
Disadvantages: Tiring
...The science museum in London seemed the ideal place to take my 13 year old daughter during the school holidays and we were not disappointed.
The nearest tube station is South Kensington on theDistrict/Circle/Piccadilly line. You will have to walk through a long tunnel to get there. Do not buy tickets in the tunnel we found the queue slow moving and there are plenty of
cashiers selling ticket inside the museum. It will cost about £12 for adults and half price for children and 60+ senior citizens..
You will not see everything in one day so plan your visit to see areas of most interest to you. The differing areas are a bit confusing, but you will be given an excellent map with your tickets. It is worth spending five minutes studying it before you start. Main lifts will get you up to the third floor but access to
the fourth...

Makes Science Fun
Review of Dorling Kindersley - My First Amazing Science Explorer by
poet831
Advantages: Makes Science fun and interesting, lots of stuff to do.
Disadvantages: None
...Don't you just hate it when your children ask you a question and you don't know the answer? With me, it used to be the Science questions that stumped me a lot of times. I'd been a decent student in school, but I couldn't remember enough sometimes to answer questions. I'd have to pore over books to find the information when my kids were little. With my grandkids, it is so much easier - and this CD-Rom is one of the reasons why.
It is aimed at the 5-9 age group. You know, the one with all the "why?" questions about all manner of things going on around them. Younger ones will enjoy the fact that the screens are narrated as they open, and are brightly illustrated. Older ones will have fun with the quizzes - all done with Key Stages 1 and 2 of the curriculum in mind.
There are sections on Simple Machines, Space, Electricity...
