Life aboard a German U-Boat
Review of Das Boot DVD by
gorvifal3
Advantages: A good war film with a different perspective, a well made film, well directed
Disadvantages: At 3 hours and 20 minutes the film is quite long
...I decided to buy this DVD because I wanted to watch a war film with a different perspective. I had heard from other people how good this film was and it was obviously evident because it had been nominated for six Academy Awards and an Oscar. Das Boot is a German made film and is about the German crew of a U-Boat who patrolled the Atlantic during World War 2. In most American or British World War 2 films the Germans tend to be dehumanised and looked upon as cold and evil, because Das Boot is German you get to see how normal most of the Germans really were. The characters on board the U-Boat are presented as people who are doing their military service, trying their best to fight for their country. Members of the crew tend to have a healthy lack of trust for most politicians including Hitler and Churchill.
Das Boot has been extremely...

Review of U-571 DVD by
ptiemann
Advantages: Plenty of Action
Disadvantages: Mind-Bending Ideas that go through your head!!
...I finally got my girlfriend in the movie theater to see U-571. Director Jonathan Mostow followed up his thriller, Breakdown, with this World War II drama about an American submarine's crew, determined to capture a top-secret device from a Nazi U-boat.
Matthew McConaughey broke into show business in the 1970's coming of age drama, Dazed and Confused. I remember him best in A Time To Kill, a Joel Schumacher adaption of a John Grisham novel. It starred Sandra Bullock, Kevin Spacey and Samuel Jackson and this great film took Matthew to Hollywood success in a hurry. He has made his mark by selecting premier stars and directors to work with, and then, surpassing their expectations with fine acting.
As Lt. Andrew Tyler in U-571, McConaughey is almost unrecognizable without his famous mane of hair, but that deep voice assures you it is he...

One theory for U.F.O.'s
Review of Everything that starts with U ... by
markfarrow
Advantages: I could be right!!
Disadvantages: I'm most likely wrong!!
...Time for something different, I need a break from reading product reviews so thought I would write about U.F.O.’s. Why?? Well we were talking about them at work this week and several theories were banded about , mostly if they do exist, what are they??? Well too many people have seen stuff for there not to be anything out there, and I am one of them, so there is something flying around our skies. But what is it. What follows is just one theory that was talked about, it seems to make sense.
What if U.F.O.’s weren’t from outer space containing aliens, but aircraft from the future carrying humans that have come back to have a look or to change something?? Sounds weird I know, but it could just be…
Ok, so some time in the future we learn how to travel through time, maybe we can only come backwards because that has already happened...

Blakes Boating holidays on the Broads
Review of ben beale - boating by
belinda9
Advantages: relaxing holiday
Disadvantages: could be boring if it rained
...Just got back yesterday from an Educational with my new job. I work for Blakes Boating Holidays, they also have holiday cottages. At the moment they are based in Wroxham, Norfolk but because at Earby where the cottage section is based, the company thought it was best to re-locate the office to ours, then it would be all in one place.
Blakes have been going since 1908 and are well established. As we are a complete new section, we all had to go on a boat down the Norfolk Broads last week. Not many of us knew anything at all about boats, not many of us had even been on one. We had to experience one so we knew what we were talking about when we take bookings.
There are three types of boats, one is a cruiser, there is a yachting holiday and a narrowboat holiday for customers to book.
In a few weeks I will have the pleasure of going...

Abingdon Boat Centre - Yo Ho Ho etc
Review of Abingdon Boat Centre by
etala
Advantages: Brilliant for messing around on the water
Disadvantages: Rather reliant on the weather
...I really do like the town of Abingdon, and every time I visit I seem to like it just a little bit more, it seems to have a really good mix of olde worlde charm, modern facilities and a nice friendly ambience. It's not as pretentious as its bigger neighbour, Oxford and hasn't let it standard's slip and become a Chav's paradise like Didcot to the south. Probably the best thing that Abingdon has going for it though is the River Thames which runs right through the centre; past Victoria Park, along by the church and onwards to where the supposed new reservoir is planned to be built.
It was on a regular shopping trip to Abingdon that we spotted the Abingdon Boat Centre and noticed that they hired pleasure boats for that little bit of "messing about on the water". I popped into the centre and took a leaflet giving details of their prices...

The Red Boat in Stockholm
Review of Den Roda Baten (Red Boat), Stockholm by
dance
Advantages: Convenient location - between Sodermalm and Gamla Stan
Disadvantages: There are two boats - you might not stay on red boat
...I stayed here for 3 nights in early April. I booked this hotel because it is highly recommended by another review website and I got attracted to the pictures on the red boat's website. I booked directly with the hotel and the rate was 230SEK per night per person. This is about £18 per person. I was on a budget and Stockholm is an expensive city, so I booked a triple-bed cabin without shower and washbasin.
How to get there: We landed at Stockholm Arlanda airport. We took the airport express to the central station in stockholm. The airport express costs 200SEK (adult) and 100SEK for students with ISIC card. It took us 20 minutes to get to the central station .Then, we took the metro to go to Gamla Stan station which is only one stop away. Exit the station on the right and then turn left to cross the bridge. It's less than 5 minutes...

U-571 The Case For, The Case Against
Review of U-571 DVD by
Pborowiec
Advantages: An exciting World War 2 action film.
Disadvantages: Dubious historical accuracy...
...travel unescorted out to sea).
3. If you're British, repeat no. 1.
For: 1. Its just a film, not a documentary.
2. At the end, it acknowledges that it was infact the Royal
Navy that first captured an Enigma machine from a U-boat.
3. An argument that is often overlooked: How is what the
Americans do in this film any different from what Britain
did after World War Two? After all, how many Britons know
that the first Enigma machine was captured and cracked by the
Poles before the war even started? Exactly.*
Ultimately, if you are able to forgive U-571's debatable historical accuracy, you'll get a lot of enjoyment from it. Otherwise, if you feel that Hollywood had no right to 'alter history', steer clear.
*I am aware...

Let life sail on by at The Boat
Review of The Boat, Boat of Garten by
Shoka
Advantages: Award winning restaurants, beautiful views, friendly staff, dogs allowed
Disadvantages: No lift for disabled guests, £100 a night for a standard room is quite expensive
...off. As a relative newbie to the joys of Scotland I was shocked at just how quickly you start to see beautiful countryside on leaving the city of Glasgow. The journey up was very enjoyable for the entire 3 hours due to the beauty of the scenery and the weather too. Hardly the stereotypical view of Scotland.
At around 7.30pm we arrived in the former ski resort of Aviemore, the UKs premier winter sports location. It is sad to think that they haven’t had the snow there for ages now. As there were 20 of us doing the walk it hadn’t been possible to find digs for us all in the same B&B or hotel. Most of the places in this area are small hotels with small capacities. We agreed at that point to go and check into our hotels, then we would meet back up for an evening meal in Aviemore. The hotel I was assigned to was The Boat in the tiny village...

To boat or not to boat
Review of ben beale - boating by
polarbear
Advantages: Freedom to just BE.
Disadvantages: Can appear expensive to hire
...Canal NARROWBOATING to be precise. All mod cons, running hot water, hot showers, log fire, central heating and electricity. FUEL is also very cheap on the canal, as you stately glide along at 4 to 5 mph.
My husband and I have had shared ownership of a boat for the past 4 years.
Absolutly magic.
We have no permanent mooring because we like to explore all the picturesque canals of England (and Wales, of course!)
Our home is in the South East but at the moment our boat is in the Midlands. Because we have no permanent mooring one couple or the other have to move it every two weeks. This is not a chore.
Last year we took it across the Llangollen aqueduct-SCARY-in North Wales and at the moment it is on the Oxford canal.
If you have not considered this type of boating as a holiday I can tell you that our children AND our...

Lets float the police boat.
Review of Lego Fire, Police & Vehicles: Police Boat by
mumsymary
Advantages: Super toy lots of play value
Disadvantages: None
....
Lego is a safe toy for a small child no rough edges big enough not to be swallowed.
*Recently I have seen the Duplo police boat*
. This toy is will be ideal for a 3 or 4 year olds. . This box of bricks includes 2 boats, 1 blue and white police boat, one yellow boat, 2 figures. There is a red plastic suitcase brick in this set for the robbers to steal away. There are a few other standard Duplo bricks with the set too they make an island and a yellow light brick for the top of a tower of bricks to make a lighthouse.
The police boat has a blue cabin with windows which your child and you can fit onto the studs on the base of the boat. There is brick which is blue and grey to resemble the police light this can be fitted on top of the boat cabin. There is a lower section on the boat for the police duploman to stand while driving...
