...I sometimes dread buying presents for children in our family. The majority of them are quite happy to have a game for whatever games console they have, but it tends to get a bit tedious buying the same thing repeatedly each year. As it is fast approaching my niece’s birthday, we went out for a browse round the shops recently for some inspiration. Bop It Extreme 2 seemed to jump out on me from the shelves in Woolworths. Shaped similarly to a steering wheel but with no top or bottom to the circle, the device is brightly coloured and has lots of knobs and fiddly bits on it. ...WHAT IS IT? Bop It Blast is an electronic game in which you have to keep up with random voice, musical or light commands by pressing a button, twisting or pulling knobs. The challenge is to keep it going to build up the highest score or highest possible score. Or until you die - whichever comes first. This is a standard Bop It Blast model made in 2005. The game has since been modified with new versions. FIRST IMPRESSIONS… I was given one of these for my last birthday. The sender hinted beforehand that it wasn't childish - his mate has got one. ...Well this electronic game is called Bop It and is very fun. You have to listen to the man which tells you what you must flick, twist, bop, spin or pull. There are four different types of game called beat box, beat box solo, box bop and box bop solo. The beat box is when you have to listen to the sound the very annoying man makes and get the right thing, oh yeah and you get to do about five and then the guy on there shouts PASS IT, and you pass it on to a friend. On the beat box solo it's just the same apart from it doesnt pass it and you can get a highscore up to 250 and then it stops you because you are too good. The box bop/solo is when the man on Bop It says 'flick it.......bop it.........bop it.........twist it...........pull it......... and so on. I know Bop It Extreme has actually been around for a couple of years now, and it is a definite improvement on the original (only two actions there) so I can’t resist writing about it for you. Bop It Extreme is basically an electronic toy that adults and children can play. Heck, my Grandma even had a go. ...One Christmas, whilst at work, a colleague bought in some games to play…a bit retro school years I know but never mind. Such are the joys of working for local government. One of the games that annoyed the most people in the least amount of time was Bop-it. After a little play I had made my mind up…I was going to become a successful bopper if it killed me, or drove me insane. I went to any good toy shop (in this case Argos), parted with around £20 and went home determined. Bop it is a highly interactive game whereby you are told what to do by a voice that appears out of a machine. Weird I know. The Bop-it game is actually shaped like a steering wheel that doesn't quite meet at the top and bottom. ...My ex's dad bought him this for Christmas two years ago, it's one of those "Hey dad's got you a really cool present" and he opens it to find *BOP IT*. Immediatly it is unwrapped, batteries are plugged in and there we are four grown ups sat on the floor reading instructions on how this thing works. Anyway after half an hour of debating what we did with it, i swich it on and it's off, telling me to Bop it, Twist it and Pull it!! Novel idea.....now what the hell did i do with it, so i sat there pulling, twisting and bopping it as it told me to, having fun on my own and then they wanted to join in, so the rules went back into the box and we were off. ...Having received Bop It at Christmas, I was unsure about it at first. I turned it on with no clue what I was doing, and I was apparently changing modes and volume. After several attempts, I decided to do something I only ever do as a last resort: Read the manual. Surprisingly, once you know what you are doing (which took a couple of seconds) you can Bop It immediately. Looking at it, it gives the appearance of a rather odd drum, with several "sticky-out bits" attached, all different colours. There is "Twist It" (which you have to twist), "Flick it" (which you have to flick), "Spin it" (which you have to spin), and "Pull it" (which oddly enough, you have to pull). ...A board game? This is an interactive game, no sign of any board anywhere! My son spent a few days with his dad over Christmas, and when he returned, I noticed a strange looking contraption under his arm. “Whats that?” I asked, looking at him very puzzled. “Bop it” he replied. “A present from my dad”. It was splashed with colours of green, black, purple and yellow. At first glance I thought it was a very thick bicycle pump. I took a closer look. It has a long thick black pole which holds a sphere shape about three quarters of the way up. The sphere is coloured green and purple and has the words ‘BOP IT’ written on it. ...This is a very addictive game, and i recommend it to anyone. It will provide hours of fun. It can be played by one or more players. The idea of the game, is to do what it tells you. Your choices are *Flick it *Twist it *Pull it *Spin it *Bop it The game, is held in your hand, a bit like you would a steering wheel. You hit bop it, in the middle and away you go. It starts off slowly, but the more you get it right, the faster it will get. It is all done at random, so you can not anticipate what will come next. There are two ways to play this game, with a voice telling you what to do, or just the noise the action makes. Trust me when i say, the voice is easier.
